  1. Look great on you but sit a little low in the bridge. You can probably take it to any optical shop in the area and have them narrow the bridge a little bit (zyl is safe and easy to reform in skilled hands).

So what's the word on the Effector by Cradle stuff? Is it well-made? Prices? Stockists?

  2. all red canvas vans type + laces = teh shit

    Anywhere I can view these?

I think I'm going to try and scarf up everything I can, as last season I slept on them about two weeks and everything was friggin' gone. I've been a fan since their initial season and I've still only managed to get about 1/5 of what I've wanted despite always having money. :(

  3. I'm selling a gently used Jack Spade Field Bag, which is JS's flagship bag. It's been a wonderful bag but I want to move to leather. I will take $275 shipped or best offer. I accept PayPal only (tototheexplorer is my eBay SN if you want to view my feedback). Here are some pictures of the bag and feel free to message me with questions or offers:

  4. Holy shit.

Not into the placement (not too into leg tattoos personally), but that looks insanely awesome. I want that on my arm hehe. Love the colors.

    Is that yours seraphim?

I'm not into leg tats either but, Jesus Christ, that's beautiful.

  5. What the hell is wrong with wearing glasses? I don't really need to, but I do have some slight astigmatism so I do. And they look awesome. And you can get lenses without a prescription (since, you know, that's how they're all made before they hit the lab). What I really don't understand: contacts. I feel sorry for people that think putting plastic on their cornea is a better idea than wearing a pair of frames that could actually improve your aesthetic.

  6. if you are rich, order a custom. i recommend toronto's own mariposa bikes, they specialize in 'classic' builds.

if you're not, buy a jorg and olif or azor. the former's double top tube looks weird to me, but it's obviously there for some utilitarian purpose.

    oh and http://www.dutchbikes.us/traditional.html

Whoa! I really love those "Dutch Bicycle Company" bikes. Thank you so much (could never afford a Mariposa).

*EDIT*: Hur, they're Azors. Didn't catch that. I really like the Opa and Stadfiets Retro. Thanks again.

  7. I'm looking for a Dutch city-bike like this one:

God, I love that bike. Someone on the other SF pointed out that it is a Bianchi Lusso, which I've had absolutely no luck finding as of yet.

Another person pointed out a decent take at jorgandolif.com, though the hardware looks a little toyish to me.

Seems like there are some pretty hardcore bike experts here so....any suggestions?

  8. Well, even though you're looking for European and South American directors, you definitely need to delve a little deeper into Asian film (seeing as how you enjoy it it shouldn't require too much effort).

For new films check out Edward Yang's Yi Yi, which is far and away the greatest film of the twenty-first century thus far. Beautiful and heartbreaking.

As for old film, check out Naruse and Mizoguchi. Naruse is incredibly understated and underrated in the West, as his films are not heavily ethnic (pretty much the opposite of Kurosawa, who is my personal favorite). Mizoguchi is widely considered the greatest director of all-time and rightfully so. I recommend Sansho the Bailiff if you can find a decent transfer. Also, Criterion released an amazing version of Ugetsu. Not as accessible as Sansho, but it's my personal favorite Mizo and a great film.

Any Ozu is fantastic, particularly his early silents. The A Story/Floating Weeds combo DVD from Criterion is a perfect primer.

Probably the most influential Japanese film ever is Yamanaka's Humanity and Paper Balloons. A great film in its own right, made into legend by Yamanaka's incredibly tragic story (he was drafted into the war when this was released; he directed almost 40 films in his short life-time and this in only one of three that wasn't destroyed after WWII). Masters of Cinema have a great release if you're regionless. If not just wait for the Criterion which Janus is currently working on a transfer for.

Asian cinema is arguably the best library of any region, so I could go on all day. Also check out works from these directors: Shindo, Ichikawa, Kobayashi...um...I could just rant on. :)

Also, if you like Kurosawa's epics, check out Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy. It's not nearly as good an overall film as Kurosawa's samurais (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, etc.), but it's still well-rounded and one of my most-watched films ever. Really amazing cinematography, great acting by Mifune, really elegant sword fighting scenes, gorgeous female leads and a satisfying, epic tale. Really, really fun and engrossing.

That's all for now. If you have any questions PM me. I was going to post a list of South American and European recommendations, but I'll wait a while and see what you get thrown at you.

  9. I really love the idea of vinyl and art toys. It's a medium which brings a vision to the masses in the same manner as a print. However, it's just so incredibly stagnant. Most vinyl is just so cheesy and hideous. It crosses the line from kitsch to ridiculous.

My friend produced (he's still on the fence, I believe) vinyl for awhile under the moniker Android 8. He did Brendan Monroe's Sours (which were astounding; I'm lucky to have a set) and he was doing a project with Nakamura Motomichi, but I'm not sure if that's still a go. The problem with the market is the collectability vs. aesthetic factor. People go ga-ga over a lot of junk simply because a big-name artist is associated with it, and I think that will be the killing blow for the medium down the line.

  10. I'm a huge LW fan, and while I wouldn't buy it (if it was given to me it would be my crown jewel, however), I'm kind of disappointed with a lot of the comments regarding the minimalism and lack of logos. If you're into name recognition you probably shouldn't even be looking at Loopwheeler.

  11. Well, after the t-shirts and hoodie from coldrice, I've just been anticipating another buying service for some LW. The stuff is amazing. Sooo...I think I'm gonna' get a classic crew in grey, a classic non-zip hoodie in navy and a white classic t-shirt. Gonna' take a look through the blog and see if anything else is must-have. Probably not. I just love the basics.

  12. Great buy. Those pants look great.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of worldwide stockists? I know there's History Preservation, I'm just interested in the kind of shops that stock this. I'm thinking about getting my dad a pilots jacket for Christmas. :)

  13. Steve Alan was stocking the tiger shawl. Note that this years tiger doesn't look much like last year's. This year's tiger is more uniformly flecked, and the flecks are smaller, so that the overall appearance is not unlike a Donegal tweed. I think that the soild shawls were only available in Japan.

Ah, OK. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I could always dye it...
