  1. Just skimmed most of this thread (did a search too) but it appears no one has mentioned Gasaraki. Got to be one of the best series I ever seen.

Otherwise, Stand Alone Complex is a must see, especially if you liked Ghost In The Shell (the original film I mean).

    ROTHCO

    SUPREME

    LEVIS

    AM95 then SUPERSKATES to skate..

(I was waiting for this to show up in chat but no sign so I'll ask here).

At first I thought, "Oh no a Selengna picture I don't like!"

Then I scrolled a bit further and the 95's turned into Superskates, and once again, all was well with the world...

Would you mind if I asked what model those Levis are?

    Thanks,

    Loop.

  3. Military surplus has probably been the best place for me to buy stuff since my switch to the dark side.

I'm a big guy compared to most people on this forum (165-170lbs, 5'9") and growing as fast as possible (weight training :D), so slim cuts are far from necessary for me.

I think that is an important point to consider though. Most miltary and workwear is cut on the large side (and with generally shorters arms so your hands are free) so it will fit you better than the average fashionista (that's not meant to be a dig at you, just saying).

That said, I do agree with what you're saying.

    style over fashion any day

"Style never goes out of fashion." Sorry, I just can't believe no one's quoted that yet..

I think what Marc Jacobs said about his own clothes once summed up my attittude about the whole thing really well: ideally clothes you wear should be so that you can wear to blend into the environment; it's quality and what not, but hopefully the clothes become you so people notice you instead of the clothes first. The clothes are an afterthought, most people don't even notice the clothes i wear anywhere i go. if i remembered that right....

Ande Whall started a thread based on a similar idea; "Interesting Words By Bob Evans."

  4. Flannel Eras are nicee (Minus the white ones).

Any idea as far the release date goes..?

Release dates are all posted under the pics - most of the are June 1.

Are all the Vans classics range based on the same sole?

    I know I'm a US11/UK 10 in Old Skools so am I right in saying I'd be the same size in Eras/Authentics/Half Cabs/Chukkas/Slip Ons/Sk8 Hi's?

  5. I doubt it was staged to be honest, it's not the sort of thing they do.

I suppose it might have been a little naive to think something like that wouldn't happen though. I won't like to imagine what would have happened if Hammond had driven off before May had chance to stop him and jump start his car..

  6. Clarkson is a tosser but Top Gear has the best camera work on British telly (except for when they go crazy with the editing).

Seriously though, that must have been the biggest cow I have ever seen!

(I reckon there could very well be some complaints about that episode, more than usual anyway.)

  7. I am currently running an oem version of xp home.

I bought vista premium upgrade and it won't install files past 27%. We tried every single way of installation, no joy.

After several hours on the phone to customer support, taking various bits of my computer apart and plugging them into new bits, just in case., it still doesn't work.

I was then told that they were having the same problem with lots of users trying to upgrade an oem xp to a retail vista. Their suggestion was I sell vista to a friend of family member (which is of course illegal for the same reasons that I cannot return the software).

So I am £150 (just in case you hadn't realised vista costs twice as much in the UK as in the US) out of pocket with nothing to show for it but a very shiny drinks coaster in a fancy box.

Just a warning for potential upgraders out there.

  8. ...

Umm I can't think of a way to say this that doesn't sound like a back-handed compliment but your outfit looks much nicer in the video.

I think it's the movement in your top, you can see the way it drapes and folds itself around you much better than in a still image.

  9. "my sole is on the ground

    rowley 1

It was a sad day that my Rowley classics finally died...

Thefirst xlt was good too. I've always found that the newer Vans don't take much skate punishment though. Pedals tned to rip up the soles too (not the vulcanised shoes but then I don't fins they're stiff enough for bmx).

I dig my old skools and I fancy getting some chukkas.

Do all the shoes in the Classics range use the same sole/footbed?

  10. No BMX riders here?

I ride bmx, just not really well... though part of the reason for that is the fact I live in the back of beyond, in rural Wales. Thus a lack of street spot, skateparks or trails (never ridden trails though).

There's got to be some more bmxers on here though, surely?

(This is in dire need of a bike picture, I know. I shall try to rectify this as soon as possible).

  11. I think there is a major difference in early and comptemorary streetwear which stems from the fact that the styles from back in the day comprised of brands which were appropriated as streetwear.

Look at the Polo example, these clothes were being made for rich white people and were appropriated (I need a thesaurus..) by poor black people.

Maybe a better example would be the Nike Jordan. The brand has lasted the test of time because although there might be a little more concern over street aesthetics, the product is still the same, you could still play basketball in them.

But nowadays there are specialised 'street' brands. Part of the original appeal was in wearing something in a way that it was not intended to be by the designer or marketing people. I think there is a direct comparison with workwear brands (see this thread) such as Levis or Wrangler. Their product started out as purely practical garments but was embraced as casual wear and they have now because some of fashion's biggest names.

Modern streetwear can become very tiresome because it is just derivatives of the original popular brands.Modern streetwear brands limit themselves because they're so vocal about 'what they're about,' so they can't progress and move into a different market without alienating their original customer base and losing all their hype (which of course is a major problem since most of these new brands entire foundation is hype).

The other thing of course is that although on the one hand it's hard for an out and out streetwear brand to launch a credible and successful high fashion range, the major non-streetwear brands can't nessecarily launch an out and out street range with any level of credibility. You know Phil Knight isn't from the streets. Nike might make footwear that appeals to a street audience but they can't pretend they're not a huge corporation. They won't be throwing a block party anytime soon, with their entire crew there that everyone knows on first name terms...

Sorry I have rambled. My main point is this: that a major part of the original appeal was the subversive element and if you're wearing a 'streetwear' garment as streetwear then you're just confirming to ideas that have already been accepted and condoned (and to use what I believe is the street vernacular, "played").
