  1. Looking for a bench for a studio apartment, something to replace my current 3'x15"15" jammy.

The 3' thing is really fucking with me - plenty in the 4' range, but the space won't allow sooooo...

Anyone have a favorite stubby bench? I live in a land of bentwood and fiberglass, if ya catch my drift.

    All help appreciated!

  2. armpit hurt bad, inner thigh by penis hurt worse, sternum hurt most.

Thats encouraging. Have my sternum and was thinking about doing the ol' armpit.

I'm more concerned about the armpit healing up. Just got my collarbone area done and thats been a real pain in the ass.

How the fuck am I supposed to put on a jacket without ruining my shit?

  3. ran into myacademy at smith street last night. good to meet u dude.

    Yeah man, same to you.

Kinda surprised you're the first one I've bumped into there - know a few folks in this thread have been tattooed at Smith St.

  4. ...I'm looking at some of the stuff from Outlier. What do you guys wear to climb in?

Just climb in clothing you can move in. No Outlier required. If you're going to spend money...

...buy a decent pair of shoes...

I'm not so sure I'd recommend someone new sizing so aggressively, as it could sour the experience for you. Look for a fit that is very snug, but not so snug that it hurts.

Other tips include hanging with your arms straight (saves strength VS flexing on the wall), breathe, use your legs, twist & turn to expand your reach, don't closed crimp for your first few sessions (Google that, it'll save your fingers while you get used to climbing), downclimb problems as often you can, and grab the finishing hold with both hands... don't just slap it and jump off the wall.

    Have fun!

  5. anyone here use DAX?...

I do. Was on Sweet Georgia Brown but it made my hair too juicy. Dax in the purple tin is now my jam.

Its the one they claim you can rinse out with water, but I still need to use shampoo (any kind) if I really want to clean my hair.

  6. 309421_10100833592725379_8802914_64474198_1303597568_n.jpg

New one courtesy of Dan Santoro at Smith St. - dagger on my left side.

One of the prettiest tattoos I have... in the most masculine way possible. Photo doesn't do it justice.

  7. I'm stoked on every tattoo I've gotten since 19.

I got one when I was 14 that I don't like anymore, but I'm kinda torn on having it covered. I feel like 14 year old me would be really bummed on that.

  8. how long does your battery last? I assume longer than a steady beam because it's on strobe?...

My battery lasts for months at a time, but the bulk of my riding happens during the day.

4Sevens says this lil' guy will strobe continuously for 4 hours, or chill on high mode for 1.3 hours.

  9. out of curiosity, would anyone here be able to recommend a flashlight I could double as a bike headlight? I got nothin over at the bicycle thread

I use a Quark MiNi AA with some TwoFish LockBlocks as my headlight, and a Planet Bike blinky for my rear.

However, that light is my dedicated bike light. I also carry an old-ass NiteCore D10 R2 for daily use.

Depending on what mode you run the MiNi AA on and for how long, you might be able to use it as an EDC and bike light, but you'll definitely be recharging more often.

... so I think thats you answer you wanted to hear, right? Haha.

Edit: For context, I usually ride around Brooklyn with my light on strobe. If I'm someplace I'm unfamiliar with, I'll turn it on high mode to make sure I can see and avoid any potholes, etc.

  10. ...the pain is all relatively the same (except the fucking sternum which killed) and it depends more so on the tattooer and their skill.

    QFT.

While the rib pain isn't particularly bad, I feel like the dull pain stuck around a bit longer than it did on other spots.

That said, I have an appointment with Mr. Santoro at Smith St. for some sort of wacky dagger on my ribs this Thursday. Pretty stoked.

Oh, and I'd like to add center of the stomach to the list of spots that fucking kill.

  11. Proof that there is a motorcycle god.

    I scored all of this

    [awesome shit here]

    For UNDER $500. New.

    All hail the dark(leather) lord.

    How in the fuck?

Also, just put a hit out on a baby Sportster.

Something to ride while the CL is always being fixed... still.

  12. It's been around 3 months now since I got my tattoo and everything looks perfect, but there's still a small bright/wrinkly patch that definitely looks like dead skin. It's looking cleaner than before, but is it common to take this long for new skin to come in and for the bright spots to go away?

Yeah, some of that shiny skin can stick around for a while. It'll go away... someday.

  13. My old (5 years?) Patagonia softshell won't take NikWax anymore - shit wets out after like, 2-3 days in the rain.

Has anyone had experience with them changing out old gear for new?

I've heard they will hook you up from a few people, but its not something they advertise.

I don't want to spend a ton of money on a new shell right now, but I'm also not trying to make my apartment stink of NikWax twice weekly either.

  14. I copped a kit for repairing my camera on ebay

it had instructions to cut the foam pieces and shit exactly for my camera which was dope, but it came with extra pieces and I've repaired light seals on like 3 more cameras from that.

I got some old-ass rangefinders on eBay a while back and wanted to try my hand at repairing the seals sans-kit.

If you're interested, theres some good general knowledge in this PDF: http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/seal/SmallSeal.pdf

Either way, repairing your own shit is awesome!

  15. Try a bunch of different kinds of chalk out. I just buy chalk balls from my gym whenever I need to re-up, and they don't use brand name chalk.

Try a bunch of different shoes on before you bother buying. They fit so differently that it really makes almost zero sense to order over the Internet before you figure your size out on a per-model basis.

Velcro, laces, slipon, whatever your feet feel good in is what I'd go for. You're going to grow out of these shoes (in terms of skill level at least) in like, half a year if you climb regularly, so get whatever fits best and is the most comfortable. By comfortable I mean something right on the edge of uncomfortable, otherwise your shoes are too loose.

See if you can get something with a leather liner, otherwise your shoes will smell like shit real quick. Caveat being leather lined shoes will be a bit more expensive.

Don't get something with a crazy downward curved toe as your first shoe. Save that for a later pair.

5.10 Rogues were an alright first shoe, but my big toe tore through the mesh in about 4 months. My friend had the same shoes and didn't experience that problem.

Other than shoes, a chalk bag (get one with a brush loop), and a roll of tape for your fingers, you won't need much other gear for indoor bouldering.

Even when you hit the outdoors, all you'll need to pick up is a crash pad (Metolius Stomp pad + spotter is what I use for non-highball problems) and you're good to go.

When you start doing outdoor repelling, top-roping, and lead climbing is when you need to get your money up.

    Have fun!

Edit: I'm liking La Sportiva Solutions for indoor shit right now - moderately aggressive downturned toe, but not terrible for serious flat smearing. Used them at Otter Cliffs in Maine a few months ago and they killed it outdoors too.
