  1. What do you guys think, cream and sugar in coffee = blasphemy?

Personally, I enjoy both black coffee and, occasionally, coffee with a little half & half + sugar. This Nicaraguan coffee I've tried a few weeks ago had an interesting acidity that when mixed with cream and sugar, tasted pretty bad. However, the Sumatran blend I'm drinking right now tastes amazing with a little cream and sugar. I'll usually drink a few ounces of black coffee and then add some sugar and cream.

I like both so the question is, do I become a coffee purist and develop my taste for black coffee or just keep the status quo?

  2. ^If you have friends who are like grad students w/ access to really nice scales, that would be awesome. But if not, this site is a pretty good resource for scale reviews:

    http://www.digitalscale.com/

Many of the cheap scales in abundance these days aren't really well made so you should make sure you get something good. I picked up the cheap, but reliable My Weigh Triton T2 pocket scale + 200 gram calibration weight. The scale performs really well and is very sensitive. Works great for measuring both coffee and "oregano."

If you want the best purified water that readily available, you should get Nestle Pure Life bottle water. Tastes good and it's supposed to be the best rated bottled water, but in my experience, "high end" purified water doesn't really make that much of a difference in the taste of the coffee. I've tried using Nestle, Fiji, and bulk cheap purified water and couldn't really tell a difference. YMMV though

About the Hario Skerton, I would advise against getting that grinder because the burr is not secured. This results in grinds that might be uneven at coarser settings (though it's good for espresso grinds). I'd recommend Zassenhaus or Kyocera hand grinders from Orphan Espresso. Or you could lurk around and robocop a nice vintage hand grinder too.

  3. No way. For a roughly $50 investment, you can have top-grade coffee.

$15 for the best 1/2 pound of coffee from Intelligentsia / Metropolis (chicago guys)

$25-30 for a good French Press (Bodum)

$10-15 for an ok grinder, or a great hand-grinder

    Bam, coffee for weeks.

LOL $10 for a grinder? I hope you're not talking about shitty blade grinders.

A good grinder is an investment you definitely do not want to skimp on. The $75 Kyocera CM-45 is a great choice for those looking to pick up a hand grinder and it's still a whole lot cheaper than getting a decent electric grinder.

Here's what I paid for my legit drip coffee set-up:

$70 - Kyocera CM-50 grinder (modded by OrphanEspresso)

    $50 - Hario Buono Kettle

$20 - My Weigh Triton T2 pocket scale

    $8 - Hario V60, 02 size

    $6 - Pack of 100 Hario V60 filters

Last purchase would be $11-14 for ~12 oz of freshly roasted beans from my neighborhood coffee roaster, lasting a few weeks up to a month.

  4. Below are a few fit pics of my 05's, size 30. For reference, I'm 5'10" and weigh ~163 pounds:

They're at 8 months with pretty infrequent wear. I did one hand washing and had them hemmed to 32.5". I'm more of pants and comfy-beater-jean type of guy so progress has been slow.

So far the fit is pretty good except that the thighs, hips and (to a lesser extent) waist have gotten a bit tight. This is probably due to me gaining like 15 lbs over the past 6 months hahaha. I used to have to wear a belt but nowadays if I don't sag 'em, they look like this:

    yfBYh.jpg

Horrible LOL. super tight on the thighs if worn higher up. I'm pretty sure this is NOT a good look

Anyway, I got a little bored and made a gif:

    any comments?

  5. ^

    1. I got my cloth filter from here:

    http://www.merae.com/hario-V60-cotton-polyester-filter-VGNF-02.aspx

    2. The Kone filter is reported to fit very well into the Hario V60 02 and it also fits perfectly into a Chemex brewer. The Hario V60 01 size is probably too small though. If interested, this thread has some info on how the Kone compares to paper filters and other types of metal filters:

    http://coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/machines/511503

Now I really want to get a Kone. fukkk

Time to lurk on coffeegeek/ home-barista. lol

  6. I got a Hario flannel filter in addition to regular paper filters. Cloth filters allow more coffee oils to pass through than paper filters resulting in a more tasty cup. Only problem is that you have to keep it clean and soak it in water in the frig in between uses + use Oxyclean or some shit once in a while. If not, it'll make your coffee taste weird.

The Kone looks like it would be easier to maintain than cloth filters.

  7. ^ why? Thinking about picking up a hario skerton

If you're going to make drip coffee, don't get the skerton because it has the "burr-wobble" problem. For finer grinds, the skerton should be okay but for coarser grinds, the skerton is flawed because the burr is not secured (resulting in uneven grounds in the coarser settings). Get the Kyocera CM-45 instead.

    http://www.orphanespresso.com/Kyocera-Ceramic-Coffee-Grinder-CM-45-CF_p_1993.html

15 minutes to manually grind enough for 2 cups vs 20 secs. imagine doing this daily in the morning. Time is precious.

Yeah I will probably get a legit electric grinder for when I finally get a nice espresso machine. But for drip coffee, hand grinding only takes ~2 minutes for about 24 grams of coffee. That makes for 12 ounces of coffee for 2 minutes of effort. Not too bad.

@GregoryH: Kone looks interesting. you ever tried flannel filters? Any comparison?

  8. Just copped this:

I've been drinking some of the most amazing drip coffee ever these past few days, though I do really crave espresso. Any recommendations for coffee bean samplers < 12 ounces?
