  1. Real old 501's will have a low number or maybe a letter on the back of the top button or it may be blank. If they have been washed many times the red lines in the selvage will be faded to pink or not even visible.

  2. Levi's only put 501 on the back of the top button after they stopped using XX (selvage) denim - the LVC repros generally have 555 on the back of the buttons. Pre 1950 Levi's had a one sided red tab.

  3. Are you talking about these ones: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=52392&item=8302953321&rd=1 501 on the back of the top button????

and these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=52392&item=8302954081&rd=1 501 on the back of the top button????

You don't even have to look at the pictures to know they're not real!

Where cone mills all sold from San Francisco, and for a minimal sum too?

I have read that they sold all the looms and had to go to Japan to buy looms for the LVC line.
  5. Does anyone know if new narrow shuttle looms are being manufactured? It seems to me they must be with so many companies making jeans with selvage, they can't all be made on the old looms bought up by people like Yamane in the 70's and 80's. Some of the older 30's and 40's looms are only capable of producing one roll of denim a day.

what about vintage Levi's? 501, 505 or 517? nothing beats the originals!

i agree that APC is a good choice too...but their unwashed denims are very stiff...

    I agree can't beat old levi's from the 50's, 60's and early 70's
