  1. You can search Craigslist for by owner apartments, but you're really likely to get a better range of choices if you go through a broker. Figure out where you want to live and find a small brokerage in that area to keep fees down. If Brooklyn, see if posters at http://brooklynian.com/forums/ can recommend one from their 'hood. Avoid big brokers like Corcoran. They tend to deal in higher priced / shittier properties and they charge way too much. Bear in mind that even a 12% fee on a $1400 per month apartment is going to be over $2k.This'll be on top of the $4200+ for first / last / security you can expect the landlord to ask for.

The best way to get a decent apartment in NYC remains word of mouth. If you know people living here ask them to let you know if there's anything going in their buildings or in the buildings of people they know. A recommendation to a landlord from a good tennant will often give you the edge over other applicants.

  2. Ordered from Pickyourshoes once and experienced no problems. Friends that have used them had equally positive experiences. The only problem is that the prices are often a little high and the site doesn't make it easy to find items in stock by size. Still, if there's a particular pair that you want and can't find elsewhere...

  3. Shure e2cs: They're available online for well under $100 if you look around, they sound great, and they're extremely durable as canal phones go. There are better sounding, better looking, and more comfortable ones out there, but you'll pay an extra $200+ for them. I couldn't take my morning commute without e2Cs: keeps me from having to hear what the crazy Christians on the 4/5 train are ranting about.

  4. I thought the whole point of this was to be able to get off the cell network and use wifi to make calls. Shift networks seamlessly.

Does this do that or not?

Doubtful. Haven't seen any mention of VoIP functionality, and I'm certain Cingular would want to avoid this. Maybe it'll run a 3rd party app like Skype (which would run separately to the phone and therefore wouldn't shift seamlessly mid call), but that depends on how open the OS is.

  5. I was pretty certain that the bare minimum specs for my next phone would include 3G and a hardware QWERTY keyboard, but as mentioned above, Job's RDF is in full effect and I'm seriously lusting after this (at least, until I see what the rumored Nokia E90 Communicator looks like come 3GSM). The one thing I am interested in finding out is how 'full' the version of OS X it reportedly runs is: Will it be open to 3rd party apps (and not just widgets)? Will they have to be totally recompiled to run?. The implementation of Safari, SMS, IM, iTunes and photo management look great, but on a $500+ smartphone I also want to know I will be able to install apps for editing documents and spreadsheets, running a VNC client or an emulator and reading eBooks.

In a lot of ways, this really is the 2nd coming of the Newton. Love how they referred to it as the 'Jesus phone' on Gizmodo...

  6. Who cares. So Supreme goes the way of any one of countless other skate / t-shirt / clothing companies that used to put out cool stuff but now put out generic, low quality crap designed to shift as many units as possible. Something else good will come along and you'll be able to talk about how you "won't wear Supreme any more because..." or how you "liked Supreme back when ..."

It's all part of the fun kids!

  7. i'm especially looking for stone island items as nowhere in manhattan carries it aside from atrium (who only had 2 jackets in size M only).

I've only ever seen really ugly SI / CP pieces in Century 21. All the bright orange windbreakers and over washed jeans seem to end up there. There's a store called Camouflage on 8th Ave at 17th that used to stock a few Stone Island jackets and quite a lot of CP Company. Dunno if they still do, but might be worth taking a look. Non-discounted prices though...

  8. I picked up the 1967 Type III jacket in the Levis store in SoHo last weekend. Really fucking nice jacket. It's a pretty tight fitting medium as it is though - almost seems more like a 38 or 39 than a 40 - so I'm a little pissed to discover that it can be expected to shrink when washed. Naturally, the salesperson who assisted me promised that it would experience no shrinkage at all, but If the chest and sleeves actually do lose 1 1/2" and 3/4" it's going to be way too small.

So what do you denim experts reckon; should I return it and see if I can find a larger fitting medium or just cold wash / woolite soak it when the time comes? (I can't bring myself to dry-clean denim. That just seems wrong.)

  9. How would YOU improve on their designs?

I doubt I could. I'm not a designer. As a consumer however, I am perfectly entitled to hold the opinion that the appearance of Acronym garments does not make them stand out. I picked up the SS-J2 hoodie from last season and while it's extremely well put together and has some really nice technical features, it really doesn't look all that dissimilar from a Carhartt hoodie at 1/10th the retail.

  10. Password protected line? "No reselling on the internet"? Yawn. Trying too hard. Nobody would give a shit about Acronym if it weren't for internet hype. Cutting that off = poor judgement of clientele. Quality of materials / construction can't be denied, but the designs aren't really all that up to snuff. Acronym needs to get over itself.

  11. Friend of mine once told me about seeing a particularly crazy homeless guy on the F train: Train pulls into 2nd Ave and the doors open. Homless guy drops trou and takes a dump on the platform from inside the train. Homeless guy then pulls his pants back up, turns around, and starts pointing and yelling at his own shit. Doors close, train moves off, and homeless guy goes back to muttering and looking through his plastic bags.

  12. Anyone remember the ICD+ line from five or six years back? Levi's manufactured jackets and bags, designed by Massimo Osti, integrated with a range of phones and mp3 players from Philips. Huge hype, but totally disappointing. Didn't sell too well and vanished months after the first pieces appeared. Possibly Osti's worst looking work. The Phillips phone that you had to use was a particularly shitty one if I recall as well.

  13. Actually, I am doing research for potential market for REAL CP/SI stuff to sell on Ebay. Hmm, how do I tell the potential sellers that my stuff is genuine?

Genuine SI and CP will either be sold by an eBay store with an established reputation or an individual seller with a history of dealing in similar labels. Stuff to look for: Close up photos of the arm tag. Photos of the serial number (the guide posted above will be useful here). Multiple quality images showing garment features. It'll usually either be a classic piece or something from the current or previous season so check the websites to see if it's in the collection there. If there are multiple auctions selling the same generic looking item, it's usually a fake.

  14. I'm glad I found this thread. I was looking on Ebay at CP Company/Stone Island and there are HUNDREDS of listings in the UK, but next to nothing in the US.

Bear in mind that a lot of the stuff on eBay.co.uk will be pretty low quality fakes. There's a huge market for fake SI in particular as well as for any CP stuff featuring the Miglia goggles.

  15. Damn. I'd been pretty good of late. Happy enough to stick with the jeans I already own and resisting the urge to make any unnecessary purchases.

But I seriously need to get a pair of these. Any idea what the cut is like? Traditional 501? Loose? Fitted?
