  1. are heavy wax content pomades still king for hold? i want to stray away from classic pomade brands and onto something more in the realms of salon hair products. anything out there worth mentioning? the hanz de fuko sponge wax looks to be a good contender. but i'm worried about hold since it's a water based product.

using goon grease atm and like it very much. but i'd like a bit more hold.

(late reply) yes. if you want something that's still malleable, then wax-based products would be your best bet. products in the realm of salon hair products usually offer 1/2 or 1/3 of the hold they advertise. it actually may be your best bet to looking to small-batch/homebrewed products. some good choices may be O'douds or Shear Revival.

  2. I got a discount for my readers on the blog, but I decided to share it here to. They mostly carry pompadour-intended hair products, but there are still other more-flexible products. You got your basics like Suavecito and shit...but you should also find some Baxter of California. According to what they say, they're still building up stock.

  3. @The_Pomp

Gotta love your reviews man:  The blindbarber and imperial came today.  Gave the blindbarber a try!  Its definitely a strong hold like you said, and i found it interesting how its so soft and creamy but hardens so fast when in your hair, making it kind of hard to style.

I like it, but like you said, i feel like the matte (or maybe just this product) doesn't work that well with a pomp type hair style.  Without the sheen, it makes my hair look like a big blob of black without any type of definition.  Had to end up mixing a bit of the imperial in for some shine

gonna try out the imperial tomorrow!

You should have a much better experience with Imperial.

  4. ordered Granddad's like maybe 3 weeks ago?

i sent him an email and he said he would send it out last monday.

finally i get a shipping tracking number today.

im not dealing with him anymore. i thot it would be fun to support these indie peeps but fuck it.

As much as I like the dude and the product, I gotta say you're not the first to complain about his shipping. After getting featured on my blog, he told me business spiked like crazy. I enjoy helping out, but at the same time, I feel bad because I got multiple messages from readers that shipping was taking forever from him. Yeah...

But don't think all independent/small-batch brewers will be like that. They typically will have the best customer service by a long shot. It sucks that had to be your first experience dude.

As a side note: That dude is not the original brewer for Grandad's. The original guy and his formula was bought out my this dude who currently runs it now.

  5. Finishing my second jar f Layrite and really want another pomade that is more soft in hand upon application. Layrite is too hard, and being water soluble is too dry as I already have dry hair type. I always wanted something that was soft and smooth. Closest product was bumble&bumble. I think I'm willing to forego water soluble for a product more suited for my hair type. Any suggestions and readily accessible in he US? Tia

If you wanna stick with water-based, then Admiral Pomade is literally what you're looking for. Similar hold/control characteristics to Layrite but completely different in terms of application. Softest traditional water-based pomade I've come across. Another choice that'll encompass both your reqs is The Daimon Barber No.1 but they won't be restocked in the US for a while.

If you wanna switch to oil-based, you should look into Lockhart's Goon Grease, Byrd Hair Pomade, and Grandad's Light Weight Hair Pomade. If you go with Lockhart's and buy off their Etsy, use promo code 'THANKYOU' to get 20% off...I occasionally work out promo codes for my readers.

  6. thanks pomp!

basically watched all your videos and decided to try both the imperial classic pomade and the blindbarber90!

i really, really wanted to try the daimon barber but it was sold out :(  hopefully i will get to try that later on when it restocks

Thanks again, keep up the good work with the vids!

dassss a lot...i respect and appreciate that you took the time.

yeah...the daimon barber is top notch stuff. after my review on it, the product took off and sold out real fast. i'm  sure they'll restock in a lil bit because they'll also be releasing an oil-based product (well...i think it'll be oil-based). like before, they'll contact me when it's released and i'll be the first to review it.

you'll be pleased with the two products.

  7. the texture of it is like...lotion? cream? my roommate had some and tried it and it provided

good texture before i apply any stronger stuff like a pomade or stronger cream.

and how long does it take to receive shit from grandad's pomade?

Funny...I've been hearing occasional complaints about his delivery time recently. He must be behind on his shit.

It's a downside of ordering from home/small-batch brewers -- they're not full-flushed assembly line manufacturers.

  8. found my tin of uppercut deluxe from 2 years ago. i think it has aged. don't remember it being this sticky. works much better than i remembered now.

Over time, water evaporates from water-based pomades which causes them to thicken up and obtain a hazy look in the jar. Be sure to keep it capped from now on because it'll get really dry if you happen to leave it open. Another way of thinking about it is that you've obtained the optimum aging, it is now at its peak ratio of water-to-product. Any drier past this point, the pomade is only getting worse.

And you can't just mix water into it. I've tried it LOLOLOL.

  9. Been using Imperial Classic pomade for a little bit. Works well but what pomade do you recommend for short side part?

Yeah. Imperial Classic would be a lil too strong for that -- it'll do the job but it's overkill. I'd say The Daimon Barber No.1 if budget isn't a concern and you wanna stay water-based. Admiral Pomade would be another water-based choice that's more reasonably priced. Plus, you can us the promo code they made for my blog, "ThePomp" -- takes for $4 per jar.

If you wanna move over to oil-based, I'd recommend The Iron Society Original or Byrd Hair Pomade.

  10. I tried their Classic Pomade. At $20 for a 6oz. jar and consistency it is, it would last me up to two months which is far more than any other water-based pomade including Suavecito. But is it just a fancy, refined gel? Yeah.

  11. alright, so i think its time to get some new products since i am almost done with my shiner's gold.  For the record, i really liked the product, though it is my first pomade so i don't have much experience.  I kinda like it cause it doesnt give me that super greasy look and its easy to work with.

Any suggestions for what else to get?  I was initially gonna go for another tin of the shiner's gold and try the imperial products, but open to suggestions

on a side note, any suggestions on shampoos that hydrates and give softer hair?  my hair is usually super hard to work with

    Thanks!

Can't say anything about Imperial's line yet. Ummm...Grant's Original is a very similar product to Shiner Gold, but I think you'd wanna try something better. The Daimon Barber No.1 will provide you with slightly weaker hold but the finish it gives off is unmatched by any other water-based pomade.

What are you looking for? As in characteristics of the product.

  12. noob but how do i order the different kind of holds from there etsy site? i can only select scent as options to pick from?

For Grandad's? I see where the confusion is. In that same selection, it's not only scent. You'll also see the designation of strength prior to the scent (i.e. light, medium, heavy).

  13. i can tell. i havent saw most of the ones you talk about. i Just saw granddads the other day. Wat would you recommend for very high hold/control, Matte, not to smelly and something you can run your fingers through regularly without losing hold, so no dry hold? Volume too if thats possible.

I'd say go for the Grandad's Heavy Weight and custom order your scent. You can ask him to go light on it too. It's relatively wax heavy compared to the other pomades I've recently looked into. So you'll get good hold, and it won't get too greasy.

also anybody ever try murrys beeswax? Ive heard from people that its shiny with great hold and some say its matte. Its very cheap and comes in a decent sized bottle

I'd stay away from it. It's a really greasy product and smells terrible. Unless you're using it in very small amounts or in combination, it's actually pretty gross stuff.

  14. for slick backs and pompadours (in their true form)...anything from the grandad's line

    tumblr_inline_mytd0w20E91raebjw.jpg

for matte and strong hold...anything with high wax content. anything from Dax Hair Wax to Byrd Hair Pomade with give you want you need. basically, if you find yourself using more than one product on the daily...you're like putting in too much effort, wasting money, and not looking at all the available options.

I don't have much to say on large-scale product manufacturers. I support and have more experience with small-time brewers aka homebrewers -- water or oil based.

  15. hows that blind barber stuff compared to slick devil?

In characteristics, slightly but significantly stronger than Slick Devil. No shine at off. Will flake/crust off if applied into completely dry hair or in excess. Not good at all for a traditional pompadour, but has definitely potential for other styles (that I don't or don't know how to style).

i have thin hair too! just when i try to slick back it kinda bounces back and doesnt hold

How long is your hair? That might be the issue because shit...at some length...it's gotta eventually outweigh its own strength to standing.

  16.

did you ever achieve this look?

really want this for my stubborn, asian hair but dont know where to start Â¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can also try out Blind Barber 90 Proof. Wasn't good for what I needed but may help you achieve what you're looking for.

  17. >>The_pomp

What's your take on imperial pomade? you seem to be a pomade expert.

I'm no expert, just have experience. I arranged to do a review for them, but I'm still waiting for the product(s) to arrive in my mail. I've heard a huge mixture of good and bad things about them, so I don't even know what to expect.

  18. Slick Devil is stronger than Suavecito Original and slightly stronger than Suavecito Firme. It has a matte finish and definitely hardens, but not to the extent of Suavecito. Downside of the product is that it doesn't lend to restyling throughout the day.

If you guys wanna add shine and prevent a water-based pomade from drying too much throughout the day...just add some Dax Super Neat. Trust.
