  1. Holy shit; 45 minutes ago, roughly, I got bloody run over by a car at a junction. Four police cars and one ambulance later I am fine but my bikes totalled.

Reason I'm sharing this, is that I'd like to remind people to be very vigilant when on the roads, I always thought "shit like that never happens to me". You can be following every rule in the book, but some idiot in their metal box can "not see" you and that's that.

Now I'm off to cry over my bike.

  2. Hi Steve,

I run a creative agency out of Melbourne (duo d uo) — a good place to start is Aus in Front there are some pretty active forums and lists of studios in and around Melbourne.

We are always on the look out for fresh talent and more than happy to sit down for a chat when you get here.

Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it.

I will be heading out around January time, and it would be great to pop in and see you guys.

I'll be sending out mailers before hand, expect one in the post!

  3. Seems like a number of people work in ad / design ? Maybe someone here can offer some advice then. I'm about to graduate undergrad from a liberal arts college that is somewhat name droppable but ultimately has no pull in these sorts of fields. Furthermore, I'm a double major in psychology and Japanese, so 0 relation to ad or design of any sort. I'm thinking I want to possibly go into ad or design as I've more or less tired of academia and research in cultural....

If you go in thinking you're better than everyone that won't get you far.

  4. Some of the stuff in this thread is amazing. I want to make a shaving bag myself. As a complete noob - where should I start off? any good websites?

I am in the UK and assume that I can get plenty of nice leathers here?

There's plenty of places to get leather. You're only problem is that there is usually a minimum order of 15 sqft. You could make stuff to sell though...

Nice! Joey what's your process for burnishing, those edges look perfect. Wondering if I should go and buy some canvas if that would work better.

N-O-R-S-E...I use contact cement and apply with a brush for most of the stitching I do, but I use it sparingly. It looks like your edges are separating quite a bit. It's hard to tell but maybe your stitches are a bit too far from the edge too? Happy burnishing.

I'll start using the cement again, i added a little bit into the design above and it did help. I might get a wood slicker and canvas the slicker i've got just now doesn't seem to generate enough friction.

  6. I'm assuming that you're burnishing veg tan leather. After beveling the edges and sanding if necessary...I'm having some success lightly wetting my edges with a sponge, then rubbing lightly with Fiebings glycerine bar soap. Next, I rub some Fiebings yellow saddle soap into some canvas (don't load up too much) and begin burnishing.

I am also interested to know other techniques that people are using.

    Yes Veg tan!

Do you use a contact adhesive as well as the stitch? I stopped using it as it got everywhere! This is probably my reason for it not working out too good.
