  1. Note that the natural indigo also takes considerably longer to start showing wear.

If you're looking to see fades quickly, I'd recommend either the standard fare or the SR4s.

  2. An incident yesterday involving a commuter mug full of coffee, a sling pack with packages strapped to the back of it, and a long ride to work ultimately necessitated a rinse yesterday.

    They're still drying at home.

I'm not particularly stoked about a rinse after only a month, but it was better than coffee stains and smelling like single-origin Guatemala for weeks.

    Sigh.

  3. Are there any details about the new SR4? Looks like streaky denim, with a tinge of green? The website is a bit vague...

Based on some email conversations with Mr. Whall himself, it's 14.5 oz 'super crunchy stiff denim'. He expects some pretty dramatic fades.

  4. I ordered this pair of 29x31 Cobras as soon as I saw the Special Roll #3 (14.1 oz natural indigo, white selvage line) go up, and I was super stoked when they arrived yesterday — they were meticulously crafted by Ande Whall in New Zealand, and they're absolutely gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I evidently suck at measuring, and my goofy bicycle-riding legs don't fit into the Cobras well enough to even allow me to try to stretch them out.

They were worn for less than an hour, and they have not been soaked. I still have the hang tag and the original packaging. These were literally made the week of Thanksgiving.

Pics, measurements, and fit pics (not mine) are below.

These are pair number 5 of 21 that will be produced from the roll of denim.

Retail is $275, plus $38 shipping from NZ. I'd like to see $200, shipped (within the US).

Edited to fix a typo and to spell out 'Special Roll' instead of using SR throughout... Get it, search engine spiders!

  5. Spoke to Mr. Whall (again, really not possible to stress how nice a guy he is!): He has confirmed that these are not going to work for me.

I reckon these like-new, 29x31 SR3 Cobras will be in the supermarket here very shortly.

  6. If you can't get them on to button them up in a raw (albeit sanforized) state, I think you can safely assume they're too small.

I am quite inclined to agree with you.

Which is all sorts of disappointing, but it is what it is (and, quite obviously totally my fault) — I was thinking too much about their stretched fit and failed to take into account how they'd be initially.

The inability to get them on sort of makes getting them stretched out pretty well an impossibility.

  7. Yeah, the problem is that I can't get them on all the way to get them to stretch out, and the SR3 denim is a denser weave than the regular denim, so I'm not sure that there will be as much give.

I sent Ande a message asking for his thoughts. We'll see what he says...

  8. My pair arrived and they are absolutely stunning. Impeccable craftsmanship, and the SR3 denim is really lovely and has a nicer, softer hand than I'd expected.

Unfortunately, I appear to have measured poorly, and I'm really not sure if a soak will be enough to loosen these guys up enough to fit around my goofy bicycle-riding legs. As it is now, I can't pull them up high enough on my waist to get the top button buttoned.

    Oof.

May try soaking, may just sell. *sigh*

  9. Anybody got details on the new SR?

Seems to be identical the first Wakefield Hotel run, though that's not been 100% confirmed.

When I asked Ande himself about it, he said the following:

"The SR3 denim will be slightly more durable than the regular line denim, it's heavier and has quite a tight weave."

  10. I ordered a pair last week, and Ande was not only incredibly helpful and friendly,* but also amazingly fast to get the pair I ordered (SR3 Cobras) made and shipped.

And now, I wait. I suck at waiting.

Here's hoping these fair better against the bicycle than my last pair did...

*Serious understatement here. Immensely amiable guy.
