  1. I'm really digging the fit of the SOC 714 Valencia jeans, but I wish the rear pockets matched those on the 727 La Jollas. The pockets on the 714 are about 1/2" less deep than the pockets on the 727, which, in my opinion, makes them less usable. I also feel like it gives them a weird visual effect. I prefer the scalloped cut of the top of the pockets when it is located higher up, closer to the top of the jean. If these pockets had the same size and placement as the pockets on the 727, the 714s would be perfect in my opinion... Any chance those pockets might be altered on future runs?

  2. I was the guest on this week's Let There Be Talk, my first podcast recording!  I dislike my voice and freeze up anytime any audio is recorded so this was nerve-wracking for me, i'm scared to listen to it.  Dean Delray's Let There Be Talk podcast is sponsored by Rawr Denim and 3sixteen this week, listen to the episode because Rawr is giving away a $250 Self Edge gift card and 3sixteen is giving away one pair of jeans from their webstore.

Enjoyed this podcast very much. Had to laugh when Dean said "I could kick the drugs but not sweets and not shopping." Thought your voice sounded good, Kiya.

  3. Is your black hoody small in width or in length?  The thing about the indigo hoodies is how short they start out...it might start super snug, after you stretch it, it will be fine.

The length is okay on my black hoody, though I wouldn't want it any shorter. It's a bit snug in the chest and shoulders. It sounds like you're saying that it will be short and I should be prepared for that and not expect that to change much, and that it is in the width that it will stretch more--is that accurate? Or are you saying that it actually stretches in length? Thanks.

  4. The black/grey won't shrink to the extent that the indigo does with normal washing and drying.  You'd have to do a boiling soak, and then blast it already dry in an extremely powerful dryer to come close.  For this reason, the indigo has unique potential to be stretched out in a way that it won't just totally shrink back to how it was new the first time you throw it in a dryer.

Wondering about how much the indigo SG hoody will stretch. My black SG hoody (XL) is on the small side (I only wash cold & hang dry). I'm interested in the indigo hoody, but afraid b/c it is maxed shrunk, that it will be too small. But then I read about this talk of it stretching more... Any input is appreciated!

  5. Hi,

Question about sizing on the Iron Heart jersey knit shirt: if I'm a large in the IH 2013 Indigo Check Snap Shirt - Red, would I be a large in the jersey knit? The chest measurement is wider (44 on jersey vs. 42 on check snap) but the shoulders are narrower (17.2 on jersey vs. 18 on check snap). Probably due to the thicker fabric, but wanted to double check.

    Thanks!

  6. That is correct, if you get the same size and soak them you should have a hair more room.

Also, you can always control how big the waist is going to be with the temperature of the water and the length of time the jean spends in the water.  A ten minute cold water soak isn't going to shrink the jean as much as a 45 minute hot water soak.  By the time you get around to washing the jean it won't matter much if you cold or hot soaked the jean with the exception of losing another ~1" in length if you cold soaked them.

    Thanks, Kiya,

Do you know if the amount that this new denim stretches vs. the denim on the SF-01 is similar? The 14.5 oz denim doesn't seem to give much in the waist.

    Thanks.

  7. Kiya,

Is it a safe assumption that a size 31 in these new Roys will have a touch more room in the waist than the same size in SF01? Same waist measurement but 11oz. denim shrinks a little less? Or does the lower rise equalize it? The 31 SF01 are just a bit on the tight side but the 32s were on the baggy side. Thanks.

  8. cross-post from 3Sixteen thread:

Question about sizing for 30BSP -- would I get the same size I wear in the SL-100X? Also, the thigh measurements for a size 31 are identical between the SL-100x and the 30BSP on selfedge's site; is this a case of the measurements not telling the full story of how they fit (I assume there is more thigh room in the 30BSP)? Or is it more accurate to think of the 30BSP as a wider-thigh version of the ST-100x, but similar in thigh width to the SL-100x? Thanks!

  10. Alrighty, mine should be coming in today.  What do you guys recommend for a soak? Just put them in a bathtub full of hot water and agitate for like a half hour?

I followed Roy's instructions on the Duck-1 page of Self Edge's site, to keep the leather patch healthy. So I soaked my SF01s in really hot water for no longer than 10 minutes and I agitated a lot. Hang dry.

From there, you can decide what you need to do based on how they fit. I.e. another hot soak with agitation (or machine wash) or just cold water if they fit good, etc.

  11. [[Edit]] After checking two pairs of the same size again, I noticed that the upper block does seem to run a bit bigger on the F380 than the 3009. So if I wear a 32 in 3009s, then I could probably safely size down to a 31 in the F380, the waist would measure about the same.  The F380 is also longer.

Kyle, yes--that is my experience with the F380 vs. the 3009. The top block definitely fits me differently. I have an F380 in size 31 and the waist is a little less tight than my 3009 in size 33. The rise is also longer. When I measure the rise they measure similarly (though they are 2 sizes different), but when I wear them they feel very different. I prefer the 380 to the 3009. The 3009 narrows in at the waist more and has a shorter rise. It's pockets are also harder to get one's hands into. So if you come across any F380s in size 32 or 33 let me know! :)

  12. I thought 3009 and f380 are the same cut.

My understanding is that they are close but actually different. I always thought that was why they had a different number in the name (8 vs. 9), whereas the other cuts like the 310 & 3001, or the 3005 & 350 share the same digit that is not a 3 or a 0. If you look at the measurements on Self Edge's site, they are different. I've tried both on and, in my opinion, they fit differently.

  13. The rise on my size 33 3009s is lower than I would like. That's probably the main reason that I wish the F380s were not discontinued (higher rise). I also favor the poly core stitching and even the back pocket shape on the Frontier series. I would love it if Self Edge were able to continue to carry that jean like they do with the F310. Especially b/c the F380 is actually a different cut from the 3009, whereas the F310 is the same cut as the 3001 (as far as I know).

The F380 has a narrower thigh too, I think, which makes for less hip flare. If anyone has a line on an F380 in size 32 or 33, I'd be interested. Thnx.

  14. I found it to be pretty midrise. Neither too low, nor too long. But that's just out of my memory. (I am pretty sensible towards low rise jeans, and these didn't annoy me).

  15. Kyle,

You've said before, I think, that if you put the Pioneer denim in the washing machine on hot instead of soaking, that that will get the shrinkage out right off the bat. But I've heard others say that it takes several washes for all the shrinkage to occur. If I have washed my 3009s on hot and they fit good now--but would be too tight with more shrinkage--do you think I'm okay or is there more shrinkage to come?

Also, is there a definitive word on whether or not the Pioneer denim actually stretches in the waist or not?

    Thanks!

  16. The 106BSP is definitely roomier than the F310/3001 from Flat Head. They run true to size too, they shrink to about tagged size.

Thanks, Kiya. What about the RJB 103bsp--is that thigh also roomier than the FH310? And between the RJB 103bsp and 106bsp, which has the roomier thigh?

    Thanks

  17. Hi--

I'm interested in the Real Japan Blues 106bsp. I don't like my thighs too tight, though, and sometimes that cut looks similar to Flat Head 310/3001 to me (which has thighs that are too tight for my liking); are the thighs on the RJB106bsp roomier than on the FH310s?

    Thanks!
