  1. This thread is dead as shit.

Kichiyoji Station is a cool spot I will visit again. Really cool select shops on a another level. Like vintage swedish tableware and whatnot.

Went to ginza6 and it's mental. Some really good things there but bad stuff too. The roof top garden is pretty cool. Saw chinese speaking staff at the food court there hehe

  2. blue bottle coffee... well. i've been to both current locations and it's decent coffee. i think all their staff works there cause they think they gonna lead the next opening in some part of japan. because most bros there got too much precious facial hair to be just another poor barista in TKO...

whats up with that comme de garcons depato in ginza? kinda spooky...

  3. about design jobs: there are good jobs to be had in japan in terms of work life balance. Tokyo jobs pay best, but cost of living is 30% more then anywhere else in JP.

getting a foot in the door is super super tough. you really must play hard and grind before things start to happen. also forget sending resumes by yourself if it is not some boutique style shop. usually you should get some agent that pitches you.

  4. sometimes i think the japanese IT people are fucking retarded. they just can't come up with innovative ideas. it's a blatant knock off of mistobox. they just can't fucking create any gamechangers ala uber. i know that the whole culture is about "出るæã¯æ‰“ãŸã‚Œã‚‹" but all they seem to do is to circle jerk.  if i see something new from japan, 99% of the time it's a knock off of some bay-area based startup's idea.

Also, japanese people who work in IT constantly share bullshit clickbait articles and æ„識高ã„ç³» inspirational stories. So stupid.

Gone are ye olde days when companies like Sony actually put out interesting products.

I recently bought a TV in the US and my friend was like "oh did you buy a sony? a panasonic?" i was like fuck no, i bought a korean tv because they look good, cheap, and last a long time. no fucking "sony timer". also, japanese products kinda disappeared from the appliance world. it's either korean or american. sucks that something the japanese used to be so proud of is like getting phased out everywhere.

even videogames. gross generalization but japanese games SUCK now.

hey... check out balmuda or cado for some rare examples of successful new wave kaden stuff. i guess part of the problem in jp is financing and management of smaller operations. most startup stuff is big and resources are available to zaibatsu related peeps only. if big corps really think they need innovation they will throw money at foreigners like crazy. the jp dudes in the office with a toiec over 900 are taking care of it. look out for sunstar. ldn office did their new products for example... for what reason? dunno....may be also related to the big kaisha small kaisha relationship, whereas a small vendor will always be bound to one big player solely. sucking up losses and whatnot in times of economic downturn and on top having little variety in experience

  5. can someone please enlighten me about wtf is going on with nagoya? we've been to maison ywt for lunch which was quite tasteful. but getting a drink after 9PM in anything else then kabukicho places seems to be impossible?

really... please hint me something like temma area in osaka. such a major letdown. we walked around yabacho and osu area sat night and it was a very very sad situation

  6. As a European I have to say that I have yet to find any tasty bread in Japan. What gets me is the overly present flavour of (fake) butter in almost all the bread. Maybe some high end bakeries in Tokyo do a better job but even the expensive stuff from specialized shops and big departments was really meh at best in Kansai, yet came at a premium price. Then again I gave up on bread really fast so after that I didn't bother looking for it as much.

German guy here. So I know a thing or two about bread I guess. Generally I think that statement is a bit harsh, as there are some serious people from Japan going abroad to the study crafts like making sausage and bread.

"Güte" in Osaka is pretty good. It's located in the underground passage to OCAT. Coming from the Midosuji line eki on the right side. They have some bread made from sourdough for 400yen a half loaf.... which is a fucking steal if you compare to what other deli supa charge for the dry prepacked shit. I also like their cheese pan kinda.

Another joint in Osaka is "Baeckerei Kirschbluete" also in the Namba area. They got a dope selection, but a tiny loaf is 800yen or so. All organic though. Actually with the exchange rate nowadays it doesn't cost so much more than a good loaf of organic bread costs in Germany.

  7. I was planning on picking up the SIM from B-mobile but no iPhone 5 support, i've been told to cut it but someone mentioned to me that the nano SIM is a little bit thinner than the micro and it might not work, even though ¥4k isn't much i'd rather not take the risk of it not working.

mobile internet on the "cheap" is such a big hassle indeed. i found this blog some time ago, which has the best info about all this crap http://www.japanmobiletech.com/ especially the b mobile stuff is explained in great detail

  8. Actually for a real question - is the process of renting a 3G / wimax modem as simple as going to any of the dozens of kiosks at Nartia and renting one? I know some places would just rent the modem out but I'd need to rent a sim card from elsewhere, but hopefully some just do both.

mobile internet is always a costly hassle in jp. the cheapest and easiest solution so far seems http://300.wi2.co.jp/en/

390 yen a month and you can log into a lot of wifi spots. f.e. at every mc d's. speed can be spotty though

  9. oh hi there. anyone know where i can buy a second hand or new record player. doesnt have to be good just work. its for my friend who had to leave hers in australia and i know she is missing it.

you can try digging through http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/ . friend made some good deals there.

otherwise look for a sofmap store (pretty sure there is one in akihabara). they have all kinds of used gear, but not crazy cheap
