  1. i would say it will. they were cut specifically for women and i know some female vintage freaks who swear by them. the originals in selvage are actually somewhat scarce with only a 2-3 year production window before the switch to open end denim. i'd say they were a good find esp at that price!

  2. hi jyoni, if they are ladies 501's i think that all started around 1981. i'm thinking these are 80's production by the style of bar-tacks on the back pockets. my guess is that these were among the last of the original selvage 501 production from the early-mid 80's. i'd be very suprised if these indeed have a v-stitch, more likely a trick of the eye due to the photo not being clear. either way they were a good buy for what you paid for them.

  3. sounds good jyoni! brown is a good color for those. they will look good broke in as the color fades. tan, green, grey, brown, navy etc... are all good colors. they made these in wild colors too--those are the ones i stay away from. the zipper sounds like a hybrid of old and new. i'll bet they were made around 83/84.

  4. i'm betting it is just seller fluff. a lot of sellers post their guesses as factual. i have never seen cord 519's that were not some type of blend, but as i said not to worry they look and feel like all cotton even after a lot of wear. let us all know what you got and how you like them.

  5. jyoni--i've never noticed a 100% cotton pair other than the denim 519's. all the corduroy ones i've seen are a cotton/poly blend. they look and feel like all cotton, i suspect the small amount of poly helps with durability. the best way to tell on a vintage pair is the zipper and care tags both changed around the same time. talon 42 zipper--pre-83/ levis branded zip--1984 on. the small square paper care tags with black print are pre-86 / larger embroidered cloth tag with red levis batwing logo after-86. unlike many levis models there is little difference between older and newer models.**** i highly suggest the 519's if you're into cords. they are well made, have a great slim tapered cut, good looking and still inexpensive. try a pair, i'll bet you'll like them.

  6. a member of sufu who lives a lot closer to the "local" stores is hitting them this weekend and will keep en eye out for my size. hope he finds something!

that's good maybe he'll find something. i'd be damn sure he had my measurements and did not go by tagged size. those washed models can run very big and of course will not shrink. good luck!
  7. Damn, called the Ross stores near by (if 100 miles away can be considered near by) and no one has them in stock.

i wouldn't trust that. the only way to know is to go and look for yourself. i've been to Ross and i doubt they know or care what is in the store, probably just said that to get you off the phone.
  8. oh one other thing. levi's will shuffle around lot numbers through the years so you will encounter some strange looking 519's of new mfg but they have nothing in common with the originals other than the lot number. originals were slim with a slightly tapered leg opening.

  9. yeah, i really like those. they are a flattering slim cut without being tight or binding. fit is very similar to the LVC 505 and they are a bargain. LVC japan did an excellent repro of a 1975 519 in grey but for what they cost there's no sense in buying them, originals are plentiful and cheap. i think all are little e, AFAIK i think the only changes during the entire run are what i mentioned earlier. from a talon 42 to a levis branded zip and the care tags, otherwise all are the same except size and color.

  10. Hi Setterman, no those are not white levis. they are 519's which are also desirable and cool. however i have a big problem with these, for one the $210 price and also they are not a good repro. the original 519's had no leatherlike patch in back or arcuates on the back pockets. they were a rather simple slim cut corduroy jean.

my advice is check ebay often. we wear the same size and i have bought originals for no more than $40. they are not hard to find, they were made up until the early 90's. the quality on these was good all the way through but the older ones will have a talon 42 zipper and the old style care tags. they turn up regularly even NOS.

  11. Yeah, I'll go back tomorrow and see what they can do. The tears are minimal though, four or five 1/2 mm holes in a line, each with some yarn left between them. Last week i ripped my almost new pair of 505's so badly the zipper broke and has to be replaced. Repairing the hole and replacing the zipper will probably end up costing me more than i originally payed for the jeans. I'll never again by anything with a zipper, thats for sure.

Also, quality doesn't always equal durability. A pair of Dickies would surely hold up better than most of the brands discussed here. With LVC, you really only pay that premium for the fit and design, not because they last longer than other clothes, even if that is what we keep telling ourselves to justify the high prices.

    >>>>> i see your point but obstensibly LVC is supposed to be a replica of the originals which were certainly rugged. if they're going to do a replica line i would think replication of the original quality would be a given. i guarantee you an original pair bought in 1920 would have been returned to the merchant for a refund with the small amount of wear and problems you're experiencing. Levi's has letters in their archives of miners wearing 501's for years at hard labor and returning them because they did't hold up. that's how high the bar was in the real world of workwear when people actually bought these to work in.
  12. i would return them, for what they cost that should not be happening esp after only 30 days of wear. a pair of $30 dickies would hold up better than that. the concept is you're paying more money for better quality; if levi's isn't holding up their end get a refund.

  13. Too many defectors to denimbro plus a general lethargy towards Sufu and not just this thread in my opinion. Perhaps there's not a huge amount left to be said about indigo-dyed cotton trousers! ;)

it seemed to drop off a lot after the new format.
  14. if you really have to have max shrinkage,i would recommend a hot machine wash inside out/no soap & go ahead and put it in the dryer inside out. if there is any shrinkage left to be had that will bring it without ruining the color and only slight indigo loss (done once). glad to hear you're staying away from the boiling water it will ruin the denim and it will never recover. not content to learn that once i did it twice with the same result.

  15. Jacket still seems a bit too big, soaked twice..might try doing a soak with boiled water and run the dryer..I mean, it's comfortable, sleeves a bit long.

Sh!t picture but you can see the cuff :P

i would let the sleeves be a little long. where they bunch up will form nice wear patterns. if you go for boiling water, it will be a mistake. i've done it twice with two prs of jeans. both times they came out a sickly blue color.
  16. perspective is a funny thing. growing up no one thought of red wing, levis, woolrich or any of the other classic brands as a luxury. it was all available at the local stores for moderate prices and it was just something you wore. my dad wore all that stuff in the 50's & 60's & 70's and he knew nothing of fashion. i remember my mother fussing at him when they were going out and trying to help him get presentable (people dressed up back then ) but when i think of him around the house he was always in rw 875's or fryes, levis and a flannel shirt. the generation he was born to you could take that quality for granted, i know he didn't think about it. unfortunately today you can't take quality for granted if you went in a store and bought your clothing in a haphazard fashion for functional purposes like he did god only knows how you'd look. and that's why i buy what i do; i guess i am frustrated that those options are not available to me at the corner store like they were for my dad. so i seek it out making an effort to find similar quality and classic good looks, i don't care at all for fashion. in fact i kind of wish some of these trends had never hit and driven vintage clothing prices so high because it was a lot cheaper just 10yrs ago.

  17. i have hope too dr. levi's has the best possible starting point of any bluejeans maker. they have a unique and remarkable heritage and a legal lock on many desirable features (levis name, arcuate, red tab etc..) and a rich and broad history to draw from. right or wrong that's why i personally don't own any japanese or premium u.s. brands---i'm a lineage freak. if it didn't exist as a brand in vintage days i pass no matter how good it is. i own levis, lee and blue bell wrangler although i would be interested in any vintage brand like foremost, powrhouse etc..anyway i kick up a duststorm now and again because i want them to address these issues. if they won't or can't give LVC the attention it deserves i would rather see the brand licensced out like lee has done esp since they're no longer actually made by levis anyway.

  18. O rly. Please enlighten me

*** well for starters see smittybat's comments on this very page regarding the buckles. as i said you're not looking very hard probably because you don't want to find anything that conflicts with your point of view. this is the last i will say about it though, to quote my late father "when you argue with a fool, who's the fool"?
