  1. Just saw a Levi's jacket where the pocket tab was brown instead of red or orange and it had LEVIS with a capital E in black letters. What is it? It felt authentic but the brown tab was strange...

(it's on another post but I guess people here are the Levi's experts)

  2. Great job, PaulT. Appreciate all the pics and inside info.

I wasn't too keen on M&C after seeing their jeans at Barney's here in NYC. But my perception has totally changed after seeing this thread. That waistcoat and chinos are simply sublime.

Here's to Levi's not F-ing it up wih XX. *knock*on*wood*

I had exactly the same feeling seeing the jeans at Barney's COOP, they looked aimed at the Hollywood target group which is very different from the rest of the range.

  3. to my knowledge (from working in retail, and from friends who own retail stores), standard retail markup is 110%. this is a general guideline, but of course, can vary greatly.

Ok, I thought markups were higher. Thanks for the info.

  4. The real unfortunate thing is that you believe retailers have 300-400% margins. If people were making that kinda money selling jeans, everybody would be doing it.

Markup is relation between the selling price and the buying price. Should you read it again maybe you will notice that 300% or 400% margins weren't mentioned.

  5. Unfortunately I believe 300% or 400% markups are common in the fashion industry that's why they still make money in the sales season. But retailers have a lot of costs too, that's why you see shops closing all the time.

I don't know if it makes sense for an artisan or a very small business to use the same distribution strategy as larger players, now you can reach costumers directly through the Internet which was impossible some decades ago.

Selling to retail will increase the pressure to increase volume which leads to employ people which leads to increase fixed costs. Which ultimately leads to subcontract production to where wages are lower...

  6. My first post, I hope you find it interesting.

My Type III LEVI'S jacket, bought from deadstock in Switzerland some 25 years ago I believe it to be from the late 60s. The denim still is in pretty good shape with a lot of very dark areas but the stitching is falling apart. I would like to restore it to its previous condition, any recommendation on who can do it correctly?
