  1. Hi all. I'm really excited as I've got a pair of Levi 517 0217's coming in the post from eBay, which I got cheap as they were misadvertised as 501xx, but a close look at the label on the back showed what they really are, with the added bonus of featuring black flag on the corners of the back pockets, which due to their original size of 40 x 38 makes me think they are a bargain pair of early redlines!(the pics didn't show the inner seam...) Yippeee!!!

My query is if anyone has a similar pair and can confirm they are redlines, and also the make of zipper on your's, as if it's a Scovill I'd be doubly happy!

    Thanks in advance...

  2. I'm just getting ready to go out, and have popped on Lee Riders. Bought deadstock off eBay, they feature a Scovill zip and United Garment Workers Union logo on the reverse of the care tag. 100% cotton, natch, and Made in USA :) Don't know if anyone knows if these are true vtg, or perhaps a bit of a repro number? I know we have LVC of course, and I know Wrangler put out quite a lot of repros, so wonder if Lee did the same? Nice to think they could actually be late '70's, early 80's though :)

  3. Hi there

A quick question for the denim gurus

It is generally given that the big E on Levis was done away with in 1971, and changed to the little e

I have several items that sport a big E pocket tag, but the other labels on the garment have a little e

My query is what are the rough dates of this transition, and how long this dual tagging took place, from sole big E, dual tagging, to sole little e?

    Many thanks

  4. I havent posted in ages and had scaled down to one pair of 1967 505 non selvage and a pair of 1947s . Washed (1947s were hot soaked) them a week or so ago and the results are as follows . Both been worn on and off over the last 8-10 months , mostly the 505s to my work . Photos arent great but theres a bloody gale blowing in Belfast today so pics arent easy to take !

Do you mind if I ask how you date the 505's as '67? I have a similar pair with big E, selvage, v-stitch, #6 on the top brass-colour button, a Talon 42 zip, yellow and orange stitching and single stitch rear pockets, which leads me, through research on this site, to make them possibly 67's. Did the 505's do away with selvage in the 60's, possibly making mine earlier? Thanks in advance :)

  5. I've been reading the '55 debate with interest, so have uploaded some pics of an early LVC version...

Colour likeness is fair, but again, my camera is not brilliant...

They are just getting broken in, with some wear at the rear pocket corners, due to the hidden rivets...

  6. I believe someone told me it was 6oz Kaihara fabric, which is sanforized.

But I could be wrong? Never owned one myself.....pics?

    :)

    .

    Thanks for the input...

Now you mention it, the Kaihara fabric rings a bell. The tag says Sanforized, so would lead me to think you are right...

It's an XL, with a pit to pit measurement of 50 inches, and is too tight on me!!!

If ever there was a reason to lose three/four stone, getting into this item is a big one :)

Btw the top picture is the best likeness for colour, as my point and shoot digital camera can't cope too well with changing lighting conditions...

  7. I've kicked this idea around for a while, there needs to be a tour for bigger guys. And with a brand or model that doesn't get a lot of press around here. I was thinking something like the Oni Blue, or the PBJ XX-009. If we could find something big enough, a Lee or Wrangler repro would be cool.

As denim is symbolic of youthful rebellion, I wouldn't have thought large and/or middle aged men would be the target demograph for the jeans manufacturers. This is unfortunate for me, as I fall into both categories

  8. I just looked at the tag on my #555 LVC '54 Sawtooth denim shirt (which has the numbers 1097, making it of Oct. '97 manufacture) and it say's 'Made in USA of imported fabric', so the $64 000 question (to me) is where was the fabric manufactured? Thanks in advance...

  9. It seems vintage (and LVC) jeans in small and medium sizes are fairly easy to come by, but when you start getting up to the 38"+ sizes, they peter out...Is it they just didn't make that many in the bigger sizes, or they were worn by large workers that wore them to destruction, making them difficult to source in the aftermarket?

Any thoughts/info on why this may be would be appreciated :)

  10. Levi Lot 53 redlines

    Late '60s 505 redlines #6

80's light blue, with a SKOOSH

Dickies denim Talon 42 Made in Mexico

Lee Riders Talon 42 Made in USA boot cut

Tuf Nut Chinos with a repro (?) Talon 42 zipper

Levi Lot 685 bootcut Talon 42 small e brown cords

Levi boot cut Talon 42 big E (gold on black) fern green cords

    LVC Homerun t-shirt Spring '03

LVC '54 Sawtooth denim shirt #555

I'm a 40" waist and it seems sourcing larger sizes in vintage is difficult. Perhaps the bigger sizes were worn by obviously bigger guys, who might have ended up wearing them to work and destroying them? Small and medium sizes seem a bit more plentiful?

  11. I ♥ the homerun t, pic please.

We've just been knocked out of the World Cup, so I have a little time :(

I picked it up on eBay for not a lot of money, as the dude didn't put LVC in his title, and it was missed by LVC fans! Yippeeee!!!

  12. Yup, I'd bet on it. Your money, but I'd bet on it.

I've just looked at my Homerun t-shirt, and again there are lots of numbers, but the relevant one would be 0303 I would have thought, making it from the Spring '03 collection :)

Btw I have a pair of '55 LVC jeans that have 554 on the top button, making them Made in Texas according to the info herein ;)

Keep up the great work, and Good Luck in the remainder of the football (soccer)...

  13. Check the internal tag, it will say someting like s199, meaning season one 1999

    Thanks for the assistance :)

There are various numbers on the tag, but the only one possibly configured like a date is 1097, so October '97 perhaps ???

  14. Just a quick LVC question if I may?

I have an LVC '54 Sawtooth denim shirt, tagged as 555, so made in Valencia Street (?) My query is is this from the first LVC range made in '96, as I have '99 going round my head for some reason ???

Any opinion on whether it's a '96 or '99 would be appreciated

    Cheers

  15. AFAIK 877's are the oldest model still into production,so they can be anything from the 1950's until the date when you got them.my RW's all have a tag inside saying e.g. 6/05 - june 2005.but dont count me on this,i am far from being an expert.

    lovely pair,btw.

    Thanks for that :)

It's amazing how the brain works, as from looking at the inner label and reading 'Irish Setter Sport Boot', to typing it on the PC and it becoming 'Irish Setter Work Boot' LOL

I just checked and there is no date info inside, but my feeling is probably seventies, just from the look of them and the feel...

  16. Here's a pic of my Redwing Irish Setter Work Boots that I got on eBay from America a couple of years ago...

They were beautifully aged and have got better without too much effort...

The pic used flash, and they are not that shiney, but not totally dull...

They are Made in USA (I don't know if they all are, or if they are now outsourced?...) and was wondering if there is enough info for someone to roughly date them?

    Cheers

  17. you can use a special varnish for brass and copper, you should be able to get it at most hardware/DIY shops.

I personally wouldnt use it,IMO that buckle will benefit from everyday wear and tear.

Thanks for the response. I did a Google search and came up with a site that had some ideas, and ended up using vinegar and an old toothbrush which seems to have cleaned it up, but will have to wait a while to see if it comes back. As you suggested, it might benefit from being worn, so I will dig out some matching duds... :)

  18. It's original, not LVC. I would think 1969-1972 (post the batwing redesign, with the little e internal tag, but before the big e pocket tag was fitted to every item), OE fabric by the look of it.

    Thanks for that

It just has the 'feel' of being an original :)
