  1. Not a boots fan but i have seen a few places around chatuchak. Really know nothing about quality and price. You can also find plenty of used redwings in the used clothing section. There is actually a workwear outlet in Sriracha with a HUGE redwing sign outside, but i have only seen it passing by, and I'm quite sure prices are out of my budget

  2. Tuscany is a good place for leathergoods hunting, but i guess, unless your wife is a leatherfreak too, there will not be much time for that. You can always get their contact details and see if they're willing to work on something for you and ship it when it is ready. I don't know for how long, but registered mail (posta raccomandata)is one of the few cheap things left in Europe, and a wallet, a belt or whatever else will fit in the dimensional allowance for packages sent that way

  3. The case could be the accounts are more than 10 years old (Pai was a gorgeous placid place before it became trendy), or they were reported by people who enjoy watching freak shows.

For the latter you can go to khao san road and see a selection of the best. Some backpacker hostels in Chiang mai offer good entertainment too if like the genre. But in big cities you can always walk away from the show, in Pai you're surrounded, and that, to me, spoils the beauty of the great place it once used to be

  4. Huh, i just read you're heading north, and I presume you will do Chiang Mai as well. If you are independently mobile (renting a motorbike), there was a tiny custom knives shop on the road from CM to Sankhampeng. It is a nice trip anyway, so if you do it go slow and look around, if the sho is still there you'll probably find some interesting stuff.

I strongly doubt they use half decent steel to build those knives, and i remember prices being pretty high, but there's ample room for negotiation, as you may already well know (or learn soon).

Stay away from Pai. Unless you really like human zoos populated by (very) rich young people wearing "organic" cotton Thai pants (the uniform is bought in Khaosan road the very first day), sporting dreadlocks and pretending they're cool people travelling off the beaten track and doing stuff "tourists" don't do. The best part is the lecture about Thailand and Thai people they are going to give you, citing word by word from the lonely planet guide. They are in the know. They have been there 3 weeks already!

  5. actually i'm not really looking for denim to be fair...my bangkok wants:

    1) pocket knife

    2) belt

    3) loopwheel tees

If you're after good knives and don't have too much time in your hands go straight to Chatuchak. Plenty of original and fake folders to hang on your front pockets. Section 16. There is also at least one custom knifemaker (very probably there's a few) inside the weekend market but i doubt i could find it again myself.

I Posted a while ago the address of a good and cheap leathercraftsman (again at Chatuchak). Browse previous messages to find a picture of his business card. Forget about fancy superthick english hides tanned by virgins in mount Sinai's oak bark blessed by biblical prophets and stuffed with whale oil, but certainly you can find a very nice beater cheap as chips. You MIGHT find N&F belts at Pronto and very probably some obscenely expensive Japanese leather belts at Take5 in Siam Square.

Loopwheeled stuff, I can only think of Take5 as a place that has similar stuff in stock. In the second hand clothing of Chatuchak, though, you could find some vintage gems. One full day is not usually enough to browse accurately

    Have fun and happy hunting

  6. they're up for preorder at nordic for 239 euro+shipping. it's not going to be in the 200usd range that's for sure. you're looking at mid $300.

If retail price in US$ is in the mid 200s and they sell them for 240 euros it is called ROBBERY

  7. Hello all!

Here's my 5 months old oak-tanned belt made by Terry:

Looks dirtier and darker IRL. Must say it's an awesome belt.

Gorgeous piece. Times seem to be ripe for a first oil treatment, even though it is in no way screaming for it, i'd give it a quick rubdown just because it deserves it

  8. Depending on the cut I can go either 30 or 31. In this cut I could only fit a 31 so I guess the answer is TTS

Thanks, i was tempted to SDO, but your indication suggests it's a no-go. Precious advice

  9. Update on my above post -- I decided to keep my Big JohnxNF pair until I received my Japan Heritage Skinny Guy pair from Blue Owl. Thanks to their prompt service, they arrived today:

    NFJapanHeritage.jpg

Jesus Christ, how does Russell Brand expect to have babies with Katie wearing pants like these everyday. I mean, I kinda like it, because I was looking for a drastically slimmer cut to compliment all my '47 style cuts in other brands but these will not be comfortable for everyday wear if they stay this size. I've been sitting in them for the last 2 hours trying to stretch them out. Somebody PLEASE tell me they stretch. I cannot size up because based on how the waist is, any size up will be too wide.

Did you go TTS with these or you sized down one?

  10. Craftsman wise, I've noticed a local workshop called TailFeather - don't know if they would be interested in a small run project though.

Mention a bunch of friends you have in Carlton who would be very upset if he refuses to work on that project, among which, your uncle Mick (specify his surname is GATTO). I'm pretty sure he'll be happy to give you a big discount too.

  11. Cheers mate... definitely everything is still on the drawing board at the moment. I don't even know how long it will take to confirm the leather availability, or if the little tannery we're looking at will ever be happy with the specific leather being developed.

In regards to the buckle, the double-prong is the new option being looked at - but I would think you'd be able to choose regular one-prong buckles if you like. Again, the process & details are hazy, and I haven't worked out the logistics of this yet, as I haven't got the green-light for this project yet.

From the previous two projects, I've realised that no matter how great the specs. are, there are bound to be folks who wish to change certain details...so it's really up to the craftsman whether he'd want to do a uniform production, or allow people to specify the details.

The thickness of leather, though, is what I'm pondering at the moment. The projects that have been done isn't all about the weight of the leather...the Baker oak-bark & Moser hand-stuffed leathers have been chosen due to their exception tannage and character. And they weren't only thick, but also had density and depth of grain growth.

So, if I can't find a special leather, I won't try and push a project through...we all know where to get a double-butt 15 oz belt, it's kinda like standard fare on this forum now :P

Will post the preliminary specs. and pictures once I get the go-ahead :)

In the meantime, please PM me with suggestions.

Edit: I'm also having trouble finding craftsman in Japan to do a project in 2012 - the language barrier doesn't allow for complex discussions :(

I look forward to see how the project will unfold, and I'm kinda happy to hear it will probably not be a made in Japan thing. They're awesome craftsmen (Japanese awesomeness is expressed pretty much in everything they do, except porn, maybe) but their prices are definitely out of reach for me.

I know it would be almost impossible to repeat the affordability and quality of the joe hill project (the buckle pin issue a few people experienced was a bit of a meh, but after all it had to be contemplated as a possibility for something in its 1.0 version), but keeping price in that range would be awesome

I remember you mentioning Ozzie leather once, maybe this land also hosts a good craftsman and we could have the next project made downunder.

And thanks for promoting these initiatives Mike! .

  12. Mike, is there any chance, since the belt is still on the drawing board, that it could be a single prong buckle (custom forged)? Shrunken bull shoulder sounds interesting, any visually accessible sample? I love THICK belts, though

Looking forward to know more about this project, please keep me posted

  13. +1 in the compliments for the new acquisitions from Unlucky.

I was wondering if he could make a belt from that bridle leather (i like the "veiny", darker one).

Do you have any details on the tanning/stuffing process Mike? (rethorical question, i'm pretty sure you even know the name of the cow whose hide they have been made from, and the last meal it ate before being slaughtered)

  14. The Tanner belt would have had a concrete chance to appeal to someone here, but I strongly doubt the HTC will elicit the interest of any of the current active participants to this thread.

A good comparison would be trying to sell nail polish to mine workers.

Nevertheless, good luck with the sale

  15. I'm trying to decide whether to get the Momotaro collabs, the elephant denim or some 710s. I really want to try out some 19oz denim, though so I'm leaning more towards the last two.

Does anyone have evo pics of the momotaro collabs?

If you are looking for a pair of REAL 19oz that has a proven record of AMAZING fading properties, look no further than the 710s.

In comparison, construction, fading and fabric-wise, the elephants are a bad joke (i own both).

Price is obviously different, but the sams are worth every single cent of the extra dollars you will have to spend. Plus there are quite a few unworn or almost unworn pairs of 710s on the market regularly

  16. If the original elephant was supposed to be a 19oz, and was more likely a 16oz instead (i have a pair of elephants and a pair of REAL 19 oz jeans), by the same "-3" token, the 21oz elephants, if they're not an urban legend, will turn out to be an actual 19oz
