  1. Well if it's just for one trip the slower Sigma version should do.

Have you checked out any local shops where you can rent? Maybe that might be a wiser decision if you don't plan on using it much.

  2. The Canon 10-22 is a very good lens. It's noticeably sharper than the f/4-5.6 version of the Sigma while its marginally sharper than the f/3.5 version. A problem with the Sigmas is flare, the Canon handles flare very well.

Check out The Digital Picture for sample pics, reviews, and comparisons.

Overall, the slower version of the Sigma is a good budget UWA while the Canon is just one of the best UWA for crop sensors.

  3. They have one. There's also the Sigma variant that's pretty good. And then the 50L (1.0 if you can find it and 1.2) if you want to step you game up.

The Canon 50 1.4 uses micro USM which is basically a half-assed ring USM. That is why the 50 1.4 is notorious for having its AF crapping out.

    Although I have a Sigma 30 1.4, I don't fancy Sigma's warmer colors.

As far as the 50Ls, those have permanent spots on my wishlist.

  4. Just got my hands on a 50 f/1.8 mk2, and my god does it feel cheap as hell. I know about 'you get what you pay for,' but I did not think it would feel this cheap. Absolutely no weight to it at all.

The MK1 build is so much better than the mk2. All the mk1 really needed was USM with FTM. I should have kept it.

Canon needs to come out with real USM on the 50 f/1.4, stat.

  5. My primary on the Nikon set was:

    18-200mm

I also frequently used a 50mm f/1.8 as well as a 50mm f/1.4 (although with the 1.5x crop it was a bit too "close" for me)

what range did you find yourself using most on your 18-200?

50mm on a canon is going to be even closer because canon's crop is 1.6x.

the 50 1.4 USM is known for its motor to go out, the 17-55 is known to accumulate A LOT of dust inside, and the 24-70L is heavy as hell and didn't wow me either (re: kidaradio).

    fwiw, my 7d is paired with either a 24-105L for daytime "all purpose", a 10-22 EF-S for UWA, or a 28 1.8 for a normal-fast prime.

  6. If you're set on the Sigma 30, buy it new from a retailer with a no hassle exchange policy. If buying used, try it out in person or from a reliable seller who can guarantee it is in perfectly functional condition.

The Sigma's are known to have front focusing issues, so it's either hit or miss. It's problematic when wide open because of the shallow DOF. I ended up exchanging mine for a Canon 28/1.8.

  7. ^^^why did you soak? They are already sanforized....

To get shrinkage out of the way so when I do a legit wash the creases/fades wont be misaligned. They shrunk 1" all around except for the inseam which was 1.5"

  8. I would suggest a used Rebel T1i (500D). You can find a body for about $500, sold mine yesterday. I've had the XTi(400D) which was a great starter cam, then the XSi(450D) which is just a little better than the XTi but not by much imo, and then the T1i which is exponentially better than both. It handles exposure well and can produce sharp images even with a midrange lens like the 28-135 IS USM. I can show you some pics from each cam with the same lens although it won't be a pure side by side comparison. And another plus is its video capability which can be pretty neat. But as baldy said, shoot around with the stock lens if you buy the kit and figure out what you'll be shooting the most to find the proper lens to suit your needs.

If you think you're going to be shooting a lot of video, then you might want to consider the T2i (550D). If not, the T1i should be more than enough.

Sold my Rebel to get this :)
