  1. i've got the stainless steel embassy pen that people were talking about last page. i love heavy feeling things because it gives them a tangible feeling of quality, but the ss embassy pen just feels too heavy for edc. it weighs 108 grams, and for comparison the iphone 4 weighs 138. the balance also initially feels odd in your hand when you first pick it up and start writing, although after writing for a couple of minutes it feels a lot nicer. for this reason though i'd say it's not the best for edc. go with the ti or aluminium one.

  2. this is pretty cool, averia the 'average font' http://iotic.com/averia/

looks surprisingly decent considering how it was made

i quite like this font as far as monospace typefaces go, inconsolata http://levien.com/ty...nconsolata.html it's free to download and has been designed as a 'programmer font'

the use of typography in this poster for the 2012 paralympics really sets it apart from the others, which are a bit weak

oh if anyone has aktiv grotesk i'd really appreciate it if they could should share it with me

  3. im looking to invest in a Lamy 2000 but ive got a few questions, hopefully someone who has used/touched them in person can answer them. i dont know of any physical stockists in my country.

    1) Rollerball or ballpoint? I read that rollerball writes smoother and all but the ink doesnt dry as fast & might seep through papers. Im looking to use my Lamy on the go, to take down short notes when im reading. But how much slower does it dry?

Furthermore, the 2000 ballpoint only comes in the retractable/telescopic version, feels kiddish to me. Would very much prefer the cap version, which only the rollerball has.

    2) And does the cap loosen with prolonged use? I wouldn't want to clip it to my pocket and keep having it drop off.

Thanks for any help in advance

i have the lamy 2000 fountain pen so i can't answer your first question, but i absolutely love it and think it's some of the best industrial design ever.

from my use the cap hasn't loosened at all and i really can't see it happening as it has two small tabs that hold the lid very tightly. i've seen people complain about the tabs being uncomfortable but i don't notice them at all and they're good for unconsciously orienting the pen in your hand.

i'm pretty sure you'll be happy with the lamy 2000 no matter what version you get, although i'd go for the rollerball or an F fountain pen personally.

  4. He only wrote that one book because he was killed in a motorcycle accident like two days after it was published :(. it's based on his time at cornell and his travels in revolutionary cuba and around the united states. apparently he was also a talented folk singer. pynchon dedicated gravity's rainbow to him.

farina was awesome. earlier this year I read 'warlock' by oakley, the book that farina and pynchon started a 'micro cult' around. it's incredible, up there with blood meridian as one of the best westerns

  5. I understand that. I carry around an Embassy or at bare min a space pen. But im talking $150 leather pouches/rolls with all kinds of fancy pens, pencils, sharpeners and erasers and fancy leather notebooks. Again, not bashing just curious if we have THAT many engineers/architects on here of if its one of those things were one kid is going to engineer school and posts his fancy stuff and then the next thing you know 10 people in the thread are walking around with $300 in writing utensils.

My buddy actually has one year left of engineer school and still only carries a cheap ass pencil and a bic pen. To each there own I guess...

BTW, Where the hell are the pictures of all the new gear 35?

pretty much the same reason you buy any expensive shit, the higher quality means you often enjoy using it more and it will last longer. get a nice leather pencil case or whatever and it will last you forever. i do urban planning which means quite a bit of drafting and axiometric drawing, but even if i didn't i would still get the same stuff.

i wouldn't actually be surprised if a lot of people here do architecture/engineering/art or design anyway.

  6. i "cleaned" (wiped off the threads with a bandana)

and "lubed" it (uh, lubed the threads)

    and mine's fine now

    pretty standard flashlight maintenance concept

    love mine

it hangs out in my left pocket next to my sack

ah cool, thought that would probably be it but don't have any decent lube around and didn't really fancy spending 12 quid on a tube of nyogel. it is a really slick light though, i always think i'm on the highest setting and then it manages to go one higher

  7. has anyone got or tried aktiv grotesk?, the so called 'helvetica killler'. very similar to helvetica but looks perhaps a bit cleaner, if that's even possible. i'm wondering what it's like to use.

  8. 99587_1.jpghttp://www.manufactum.com/Artikel/99587/Leather-Writing-Case.html this is another cool case for holding writing stuff. i've got one and the leather is really nice. the dux sharpener it comes with is a hardcore heavyweight brass one with precision settings and stuff, it rules. and the mechanical pencil is pretty good for edc because it's retractable, unlike most mechanical pencils.

and if anyone's looking for the ultimate pencil to carry around, these japanese craft design technology ones are the best i've ever used. i never thought a pencil could be so nice to write with http://www.penciltalk.org/2008/02/craft-design-technology-pencil
