  1. "To the ambitious for whom neither the bounty of life nor the beauty of the world suffice to content, it comes as penance that life with them is squandered and that they posses neither the benefits nor the beauty of the world. And if they are unable to perceive what is divine in nature which is all around them, how will they be able to see their own divinity, which is sometimes hidden."

  2. Anybody have any tips on card pockets in more complex wallets? I've done a fair share of card holders and small items for friends and would like to move onto wallets, but I can't seem to wrap my head around a good way to work pockets into my design.

The only way I can figure to keep cards in place and not slide down is to stitch each stacked pocket on the bottom to the inside portion of the wallet then stitch the outside edges of the inside piece to the shell of the wallet. It looks somewhat sloppy, but admittedly, my stitching needs a lot of work.

  3. Can anyone suggest a helmet that isn't too ridiculous looking and not expensive? I want to do Bike the Drive in Chicago this weekend where they shut down Lake Shore Drive, but they require helmets, sigh.

  4. Thanks for the advice hollow & corter – I think I’m getting a little ahead of myself and shooting for the moon a bit trying to make things above my current skill level.

Corter, that’s a really nice touch with the circle stitching on the ring belt – good solution to keep the grain out all the way around.

  5. What weight of leather are you all using on wallets and other compact items? I'm getting back into leathercrafting using some 3-4oz I picked up from Tandy and my first simple pouch/card holder was over a quarter inch thick without anything in it, even a small wallet would be double that.

  6. All the awesome pieces in this thread has inspired me to get back into leathercrafting - it was my thing when I was in Cub Scouts 15+ years ago.

The next time I visit my parents I'm going to have a dig through their basement and see if I can find any of the stuff I did back then; I wonder if being buried under Legos and TMNT action figures gave any of it a unique patina.

  7. The fact that Better Off Ted is (probably) canceled blows my fucking mind. One of three television shows I make a point to not wait for Netflix. This is like Arrested Development all over again, but it doesn't hurt as much because I'm used practically numb to great comedies being canceled and David Cross isn't in it.

  8. In Chicago, so sorry to interlope, but we don't have a big enough draw for a thread of our own.

I was headed home, drunk on the Blue Line - the train was packed with people in a similar state and in comes two dudes carrying a six foot sub with a third carrying a huge platter of assorted sandwiches. Chicagoans don't talk much on public transportation, so nobody said anything for awhile, but eventually someone broke the silence and said something along the lines of "...so, are you gonna eat all that or what?" The three guys all looked at each other and must've psychically agreed and instantly said sandwiches for everyone then started passing them out. Apparently they'd stolen it from some gala going on at a college near the station - it was some real gourmet shit too, everyone just ate their sandwiches and had drunken conversation with strangers, a real heartwarming moment.

  9. Got rejected from Michigan for engineering, couldn't afford out of state tuition so I just went to state school and majored in art. I can't imagine being happier than I am now, but I could definitely go for being richer.

  10. Does anyone know of a good replacement that is readily for the notebook? Preferably not a moleskin.

Nice set you got there, superbeveridge. Not sure what size your notebook is, but Rhodia makes a lot of different sizes - the orange would look nice on the black.

  11. After college (fine arts degree) I couldn't find a job for months so I ended up getting a gig at a factory in my hometown that made all sorts of shit for the auto industry. Eventually I got moved to a team making turrets for military vehicles from 5PM to 5AM four days a week and constantly felt like shit that what I was building was helping kill people. Even though I have working class roots me going to art school didn't sit well with a handful of co-workers who considered me a "pussy ass faggot" which made it worse. After almost a year there I put in my two weeks notice, bought a ticket to Italy with my savings and enrolled in a masters program.

  12. I picked up a J. Crew suit jacket at a thrift store and it's pretty good quality, but I'm with you on wearing something from J. Crew on one of the most important days of your life.

You already shot down the tuxedo, but I feel I should mention that you don't wear a tuxedo to a wedding unless it's at night. It's called evening wear for a reason.

  13. I just found this thread and coincidentally I'm also wrapping up a DFW book, The Broom of the System.

I read IJ three years ago and everyone here has already summed up how I feel better than I could at 3:15 AM, but I'm looking forward to reading it again.
