  1. Sorry, not vintage. Within the last ten years, at the oldest. AIMD is "Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department", but it just got that name within the last 5-7 years. Those flight deck jackets are the property of the individual ship (Hence the CVN 68, USS Nimitz) and issued/turned in as sailors check onboard or check out of the command; as they're not authorized for normal uniform wear. Though, like any military gear/clothing, sailors "acquire" and hoard them as individual property. They'll probably start popping up a lot in thrift shops and surplus stores soon, as we've just completed a massive uniform change from the old style utilities that those jackets were worn with.

  2. Not sure if its sterlingwear or not, the website does say they're the official supplier. All our deck jackets and other outerwear was being made by Spiewak at the time of my initial issue. The only tags in the thing are Naval Clothing with a national stock number and size, and the blank tag for name and serial number. Whoever made it, they did a rush job. The wool itself is nice, its just the construction is sorely lacking, and no where I've tried yet will touch it for repairs.

The sterlingwear looks the same, im just afraid that at an even lower price than the uniform shop if I'll have the same quality issues. Thanks for the response.

  3. Is anyone making pea-coats in the newer six button style? I recieved the standard issue in basic training, and the liner and sleeve stitching is all coming out after very minimal wear. A replacement of the same type is nearly 300 dollars at the uniform exchange. I was hoping to spend a bit more and get something that might actually last, but the 40's pattern or the schott slim-fit is definitley unacceptable in uniform, any leads?

  4. Markmont, thanks for sharing those fit pictures; peacoat looks downright amazing. Sizing info also helps me out a lot since i also own the CPO BR.

Anyone own the Real Mccoys peacoat? I wonder i theres any difference in quality or material? You wont hear me badmouthing Buzz Rickson at all but when I handled the Real Mccoys N-1 jacket, I immediately regretted buying my Buzz Rickson N-1. Especially the difference in quality of the liner was obvious. (BR used alpaca, RM used wool)

The N-1 is still around. The materials have changed to synthetics, but the look and fit is very much the same. They're actually still made by spiewak; who I believe was one of the original suppliers. In the fleet they're like gold, it's pretty hard to get one issued ( stencil your name big and hide that thing when you're not wearing it on the ship) Most people just end up wearing thier pea coat. However, in warmer climates or shore stations a lot of them end up getting sold to surplus stores for some extra cash. Just some food for thought. Unfortunately, a lot of this cool old pattern stuff is rapidly being phased out of the fleet, we're trying to "modernize" I guess.
