  1. I must say, I didn't think i'd like clips, but boy was I mistaken! Can't compare them to clipless though as I don't have shoes on which to mount cleats. They definitely help with hills and even though hills suck on a SS, i'm rather glad I didn't set my bike up with gears.

For cheap track pedals, wellgo or MKS? If a bike has a JIS bottom bracket, the headset ought to be JIS too, right?

    Thanks in advance!

pedals: stick with mks, wellgo are junk

JIS bb's only differ in the ends of the spindles, not the entire bb. you can mix a JIS bb with an ISO crank, but getting the chainline correct can be tricky. easiest is to stick with a JIS crank if you have a JIS bb.

JIS headsets actually differ in size, being that they are slightly smaller than a standard. If your frame requires a JIS headset, you can always face the inside to make it slightly larger.

the I.D. of a JIS headtube is 30mm (standard is 30.2)

the fork crown is also larger (27mm) compared to standard 26.4mm

you can measure these things with calipers, or have your LBS take care of this.

  2. finding the hubset will be easier than finding the axle for that.

you can find the hubset online or through any bike shop that uses euroasia.

switching axles is not a problem, but finding a DA 110 axle set is pretty hard.

look out on ebay for used hubsets from japan, they are usually there

  3. most bike shops should do a standard boxing for around $50. this is the way most bikes are boxed (not road bikes).

if you really want to take it with you safely, look for a bike shop that rents bike cases. the trico iron case is a nice one, but look forward to paying a lot of money to take it on the plane. this is unnecessary for inexpensive bikes though.

edit: the tinier the box you get the bike in, the less you pay. if you go from a mountain bike box to a road bike box, you can save like $20 on shipping. this requires more disassembling though.

  4. There are some bikes that will fit your needs from dealer brands, such as Cannondale, Specialized, Giant, etc. so I recommend you check those out, pick the one you like the looks of best, put on your preferred pedals and saddle and call it a day.

forget cannondale, its owned by dorel now and my guess is that its going to be going down hill.

  5. you can most likely get the frame from harry havnoonian himself.. their shop is right outside of philly. but i think they are currently making the track frames, so give them a call.

  6. jan did you want some 165 sugino 75s? i have some new ones i never got around to using.. there's no chainring though.

yo are these black? might be interested.

  7. for people wondering about clipless: if you're more experienced, try the speedplay zero tracks. they have a higher release tension and less float. you have less of a chance of popping out during sprints. its more of a preference thing though.

  8. bianchi pista: good for the money, track geometry

kilo tt pro: cheapest and lowest quality out of this group

surly steamroller: good for the price because of nicer parts (comparatively), strong wheelset w/ nice hubs, geometry has a good balance between track and road

felt curbside: i think its a lame looking bike, aluminum frame, would rather get a langster than this.

if you can afford it, don't get the kilo tt. i would get either the steamroller or pista depending on what you want.

  9. when going from stock cranks to say sugino 75's ppl say they're stiff(er)

whats that supposed to feel like??

stock cranks tend to be flexy. how much do you weigh?

you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference.

  10. worth the effort for a fixie or buy newer frame?

looks like a carlton circuit from the mid 70's. if you don't have much money, make it a fixie. it depends on what you're looking to do and if your just looking for a cheap ride, stick with this. if money isn't an option, go for something else. either way, keep the frame.
