  1. I can't add you:

You and this LinkedIn user don’t know anyone in common

  2. What is x?

    (1)

    (3x) / (3y+5z) = 8

    (2)

    6y + 10z = 18

It is tempting to say that these two equations are not sufficient to solve for x, since there are 3 variables and only 2 equations. However, the question does NOT ask you to solve for all three variables. It only asks you to solve for x, which IS possible:

  3. Again, there may be a conflict of purely impersonal ideals. Nietzsche's hero differs from a Christian saint, yet both are impersonally admired, the one by Nietzscheans, the other by Christians. How are we to decide between the two except by means of our own desires? Yet, if there is nothing further, an ethical disagreement can only be decided by emotional appeals, or by force -- in the ultimate resort, by war. On questions of fact, we can appeal to science and scientific methods of observation; but on ultimate questions of ethics there seems to be nothing analogous. Yet, if this is really the case, ethical disputes resolve themselves into contests for power -- including propaganda power.

  4. Despite the madness of war, we lived for a world that would be different. For a better world to come when all this is over. And perhaps even our being here is a step towards that world. Do you really think that, without the hope that such a world is possible, that the rights of man will be restored again, we could stand the concentration camp even for one day? It is that very hope that makes people go without a murmur to the gas chambers, keeps them from risking a revolt, paralyses them into numb inactivity. It is hope that breaks down family ties, makes mothers renounce their children, or wives sell their bodies for bread, or husbands kill. It is hope that compels man to hold on to one more day of life, because that day may be the day of liberation. Ah, and not even the hope for a different, better world, but simply for life, a life of peace and rest. Never before in the history of mankind has hope been stronger than man, but never also has it done so much harm as it has in the war, in this concentration camp. We were never taught how to give up hope, and this is why today we perish in gas chambers.

  5. Therefore, become aware of the destructive nature of the way we live and put an end to it immediately, not at some future date. The act of immediacy in front of danger is an act of sanity, of intelligence; and the postponement as well as the pursuit of pleasure indicate lack of intelligence.

  6. We will gradually become indifferent to what goes on in the minds of other people when we acquire a knowledge of the superficial nature of their thoughts , the narrowness of their views and of the number of their errors. Whoever attaches a lot of value to the opinions of others pays them too much honor.

  7. Dame Fortune, who makes sport with us, says, "Why should I preserve you, base and fearful creature? You will only receive more severe wounds and stabs, as you don't know how to offer your throat. But you will both live longer and die more easily, since you receive the blade bravely, without withdrawing your neck and putting your hands in the way. He who fears death will never do anything worthy of a living man. But he who knows that this was the condition laid down for him at the moment of his conception will live on those terms, and at the same time he will guarantee with as similar strength of mind that no events take him by surprise..."

  9. Surely it is an excellent plan, when you are seated before delicacies and choice foods, to impress upon your imagination that this is the dead body of a fish, that the dead body of a bird or a pig; and again, that the Falernian wine is grape juice and that robe of purple a lamb’s fleece dipped in a shell-fish’s blood; and in matters of sex intercourse, that it is attrition of an entrail and a convulsive expulsion of mere mucus. Surely these are excellent imaginations, going to the heart of actual facts and penetrating them so as to see the kind of things they really are. You should adopt this practice all through your life, and where things make an impression which is very plausible, uncover their nakedness, see into their cheapness, strip off the profession on which they vaunt themselves. For pride is an arch-seducer of reason, and just when you fancy you are most certainly busy in good works, then you are most certainly the victim of imposture. Consider for instance what Crates says even about Xenocrates.

  11. 6. Cézanne’s art inspired the next generation of artists,

twentieth-century modernist creators of abstract art.

While most experts rank Cézanne as an early

modernist, a small few reject this idea. Françoise

Cachin, for example, bluntly states that such an

ascription is “overplayed,” and says that Cézanne’s

work is “too often observed from a modern point of

    view.”

Which one of the following statements is most

strongly supported by the information above?

    (A) Cézanne’s work is highly controversial.

    (B) Cézanne was an early creator of abstract art.

© Cézanne’s work helped to develop modernism.

    (D) Modern art owes less to Cézanne than many

    experts believe.

    (E) Cézanne’s work tends to be misinterpreted as

    modernist.

  12. I'm particularly looking for April 77 Records Joey Thunder Overdrive Black.

To do so is to become like the girl in the old Shavian joke who agrees to go to bed with a man for a million dollars, but angrily refuses when he reduces the offer to one dollar. "What do you think I am?" she asks, outraged. "We've already established what you are," the man replies.

"Now we're haggling over the price."

  13. I forgot about Santa Barbara which is two hours north of LA. It has a relaxed beach/college town atmosphere. It's pretty small, so it's not that hard to get around. I'm not sure how the surf is. There's a fair amount of nightlife and plenty of college kids from University of California Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara Community College.

  14. Venice Beach is an option. It has an eclectic counterculture reputation. There's nightlife around Abbot Kinney, and probably more to do than the other locations listed. You're also much closer to anything else you'd want to do in LA: Santa Monica neighbors Venice, Hollywood isn't too far, and you can go inland for Echo Park and Silverlake.

Hermosa Beach does have a chill atmosphere but can be a little boring. You'd definitely need a car in Hermosa if you want to see anything else.

Long Beach sucks and is more Orange County than LA.

San Diego would be cool to checkout.
