  1. haha..i have no problems buying from BIG, but the idea of specially ordering japanese denim from japan, through a proxy order just sounds very intriguing to me. I am new to raw denim, so i gotta get alteast one order from japan out of the way.

Then buy something totally unavailable in the U.S.

It's really freaking rude to try pairs on at BiG with the intention of buying them somewhere else once you figure out the right size.

I for one appreciate the work Gordon's done to make these jeans available here in such a way that you can try them on, return them and get them hemmed after soaking them yourself. If too many people abuse the "system", then we'll lose that service.

I'm not saying I haven't bought elsewhere, or even from a proxy. I just don't do so after checking them out in person at BiG.

BTW, at this moment, there's no 32 811's at BiG anyway. Expectation is that that will change soon.

  2. I know that to this audience, this is liking asking if you'd rather tap Roseanne Barr or Jessica Alba, but as stated otherwise, I'm really a sucker for PRPS, particularly the Classic Selvage. I like the practically baggy look and the fabric is delightful. Further, I think the last few pairs of these in the original cut will be gone within the month.

On the other hand, I also love the denim on the Eternals and I could use another slimmish pair in my collection.

So, will someone make jeans similar enough to the Classic Selvage in the future so I don't regret getting 'em while I can?

  3. are brands like Skull, PBJ, Samurai, Nudie, APC, brands that make mostly raw denim considered "designer?" after an assingment in sociology today where we had to state where our clothing was made, i said japan for my Skulls and the instructor said they must have been designer. that got me thinking, what do people consider raw denim to be? craftsmen denim?

"Designer" is just a word. Different people will have different associations with it. To me, designer jeans began with those horrible Jordache things, now represented by Seven, and their ilk where the clothing designers have done a lot of work on adorning them with various baloney and deliberately making them different from the status quo for no functional reason. To me, it's a negative adjective for jeans.

Of course, there's always degrees. The back pocket stitching on Nudies positively screams "DESIGNER" to me, while I find the multicolored buttons, folded back pockets, and whimsical pocket bags of PRPS to be creative in a good way.

  4. I have a few PRPS and they are very typical Japanese jeans where the inseam are shorter ( acutally its shorter compared to other jeans but it fits a typical hong kongese or asian ), And their waist seems to run smaller although people say they run big ( Like 32 inch is same as 31 inch for other brands ). But you can get a size or few bigger becuz they have the waist buttons slap. And some of the older or new models acutally have 2 extra button slaps ( yes, there are supposedly one extra but they did make models with 2 extra so its not fake ).

My experience with PRPS is that the waist sizes run just a bit on the large size. Most other brands' 32's fit me just a tiny tiny bit loose. PRPS 32's are really loose. To the point where a 30 is a better choice.

Maybe it's just me, but the tabs and snaps on the waist look pretty silly when tightened up, so I'd consider them to be a cosmetic touch, kinda like epaulets for your waist, and not an alternative to a belt.

And being a guy with short legs, I'm very happy with the length of the legs. I've got a pair of the New Fit 32's and at first I thought I'd have to get them hemmed, but they stack wonderfully.

Who's got that pair of 30 or 31 Classic Selvage One Wash they want to unload on me?

  5. I'm slightly off-topic here, but yesterday I had time to kill while waiting for my train at back bay stn, so I walked across the street to Nieman Marcus to take a look at their denim section. Diesel, 7, R&R, etc.

There wasn't a single pair there that excited me in any way. The trend in color seemed to me towards deliberately muddied indigo that removes all the really nice subtle highlights. The distressing mostly like they turned loose a gang of 6 year olds.

And the fabric was mostly thin and soft, like a paper towel or something.

Of course I'm exaggerating, but as far as I'm concerned, there are only a certain number of ways you can innovate and personalize with something as basic as jeans. First and foremost: fabric. But instead of going premium and making somethat that actually exudes quality (cause that would cost money), most of the pairs I saw had denim whose only improvement over the crap levis sells now was that it had been washed and processed until of course it was soft. It seemed to me that the bulk of the "innovation" had gone into over the top pocket embellishment.

People can rag on PRPS all they want, but they've done some nice things to distinguish their jeans that don't take away from the general quality they build in (I'm referring here to their non-distressed models).

Finally, I like Gap jeans as well. For the price, they can't be beat, and I would take my Morrison resin wash rigid pair that I got for $40 over any of those > $250 monstrosities from Nieman Marcus.

  6. Atrium in NYC had both the indigo and black slim fit raw PRPS when I was there at the beginning of the month.

Anybody know where I can get a pair of the Classic Selvage One Wash?

  7. Hey Buddy,

I'd be interested in the raw Levi's you were offering. Any idea how much they will shrink? I wear a size 34. Also, what is the measurement of the front rise (e.g. from the BIG website)? Please feel free to PM me.

I got a pair of the LVC 47 501's in 34/34 and after a soak and a wash they're pretty close to my normal size of 32/31. You'd have to do some serious stretching to get a 34 waist back out to 34.

  8. I'm confused.

You gave us a choice between 501s that are too baggy and APCs that are too tight. Now you say Nudie only?

Besides, they're all jeans. You put them on and wear them until they smell bad, then wash them. There's no massive experience needed to wear a given brand of jean.

No, he currently owns the 501's and the APCs. He wants to know which Nudies would be better than either of those (in a manner of speaking).

My two cents: check out the PRPS new fit raw selvage. Can't comment on Nudie cause I don't have 'em and probably never will cause the back pocket stitching is not to my taste.

  9. Not that anyone cares, but ended up getting

Uniqlo regular fit black selvage - at $60 on sale, a killer deal. They have a million pairs, so anyone in NYC should definitely check it out.

PRPS new fit raw selvage - also a deal on sale at Atrium. Some were on sale. Some weren't.

Now, if I just hadn't seen those Eternals at BiG. Is it possible to buy too many pairs of jeans?

  10. Have: LVC 47 501

    Oni Red

    PRPS Classic Selvage

What's out there with denim closest to the PRPS? To each his own, but I *love* this stuff for color and hand.

As for fit, it's probably time for something tighter. Gonna be in NYC Wednesday and will try and hit Uniqlo. Will be at BiG getting the Oni's chainstitched. What else should I be looking for? Where might I find the PRPS New Fit Raw?
