  1. if i was to buy a pair of Levis '47 501xx what size would i need to get them in? i wear a 30 in skulls and a 29 in sams, and a 29/30 in most other jeans. sorry if this has been asked a bunch, i just don't know if they shrink much after soak/if i need to size up at all. let me know.

the 47 501xx shrinks 2 inches in the waist and length. They do stretch out a little with wear so size up accordingly. If the skulls fit you comfortably in a size 30 - get the 47's in 32.

  3. I've been searching for the right kind of Slim fit jeans. NOT SKINNY JEANS, but a little slimmer than regular. The problem is that my thighs are kinda big, so slim jeans fit really strangely.

But the thing is, I'm not overweight or anything. I'm actually really skinny, but for some reason, my legs just don't fit well in slim jeans. Are there any brands that anyone could recommend to me that would fit really well? And I'm definitely not looking to break bank by buying a pair of jeans.

    I'm a 30x30 if that helps.

    Thanks!

if this is your first pair of 'premium' denim, you might want to try a pair of lvc 1947 501's. They tend to be slim without choking your thighs. They are raw and unsanforized so pick up a pair tagged W 32 L 34/32 .

Cultizm is a great place to purchase them. Dejan is also super quick with his replies, so contact him if you have any other sizing questions.

if the price is a tad excessive, nothing wrong with a pair of regular 501's at your local supermarket. I've also heard great things about uniqlo's selvage line. You will get more help if you post what you expect to pay for these.

  5. definitely interested in this. i used to be enamored with superfuture (lurked for around a year before i got the guts to even sign up), and actually looked up to people like milspex no homo. in any case, i'm so sick of all these advertisements and even the things people call progressive like store tie-in's etc., but i think examples like cheep's thread about r** d** clothing shows the general consensus of superfuture to be revolted by the amount of profiteering and basically using the devoted members of this board who don't get any fiscal benefit out of posting here like cows to pump cash out of constantly by giving us incentives to buy etc.. and i think that since most of the people here are in agreeance that the moderation is cruddy now (no offense to the moderators, i like (most) of you), and that the best content here is generated by autonomous members and not by administrators or marketing executives, it may be time to pitch a tent somewhere else. the only reason i'm staying here is because of the members, a lot of whom i've grown accustomed to, even fond of some.

I have little to no time to develop/maintain such a project currently. I'll be happy to fund any such project though - I ask only that it remain in the public domain and not under anyone's control. I don't think this is the appropriate medium to discuss such a venture though and didn't mean to sneak my personal agenda into this thread. I'd just be a lot more comforable if there were an unbiased medium for people to critique/poll opinions/reviews.

sorry omc, never meant to stir stuff up

how can you get sick of 1 banner ad at the top of a page and a few easily ignored sticky threads?

The flash banners I can deal with but the sneaky ads sicken me.

.....autonomous members trying to capitalize on superfuture without superfuture's consent...

who gets to decide who the offending members are. why does it have to be an organization and not just the collective votes of the members themselves. who owns the content on this site - if 'superfuture' were to just shutdown one day/ get bought, do the articles die a silent death or will they be 'tampered' with to reflect more appropriately the new agenda.

very little cash gets pumped out of you cows. 95% goes back to keeping the ranch running.

I don't question this at all - bandwidth is expensive. Why don't you just open source the site, remove store affiliations and allow us to contribute/fund it's existence.

  6. This is horrible - both matsu and westside were incredible and never once mallicious or inappropriate.

vbulletin sucks anyway! how much would it cost to just get another sufu clone up and running ? I've always been skeptical about the closed nature of all the wonderful articles on superdenim - who retains rights to that if the moderators decided to lock them up?

We could license all the content CC (http://creativecommons.org/) and have a self moderated site. I've yet to see any major infarctions that would warrant legal action on this site and people in general seem to be sensitive about what belongs here.

I usually donate to the FSF every year - I'll just make an exception if this is something workable and fund such an initiative.

unban them or explain. threads disappearing mysteriously, unwritten moderator guidelines and these garish ads make it less comfortable than it ought to be.

  7. edmond.

I've lurked around these forums for a while and while I appreciate the fact that the fella is really enthusiastic about denim - he should not be allowed to contribute to the 'small questions' thread. He is very misinformed and polarized in his responses. Suggesting 21oz repro cuts to kids who just want a slim nice looking pair of jeans to get around town is just not nice and is likely to put them off finer Japanese (I generalize) denim for good.

Samurai will see much hate in 4-5 months - and edmond will be principally responsible for it. Sorry edmond - don't mean this in a mean spirited way. tone it down a notch - a lot of questions asked around here are literally answered on the same page. I'd help out if I had more time - but such is life.

  8. I have 2 pairs of 505's - they don't run cheap :(

I've never had any problems 'handling' jeans displayed at stores in their curatory glory. Most are actually very willing to talk about it as long as you don't come off as a reseller at a 'everything must go! liquidation sale'. I don't mean to imply that this somehow applies to your case. I dress like I do data entry at initech - less initmidating and easier to level with I guess.

There are a lot of older people who are mostly unaware of these forums/stores/auctions or do not have the time to invest tracking down their 'holy grails'. To most - these vintage pairs represent fond memories of someone close to them (a lot end up at these stores from estate sales - some possibly from their own). There are mailing schemes and 'bounty' hunters who play proxy - except they aren't playing for 10/20% . With this inflated standardization - these middle men are cut off and the stores get to play 'fair'.

I understand the appeal of these jeans - they fill a void even reproductions with their great attention to detail don't. If you see something nice close to 100,000 pick them up if you really want them.

  9. I wouldn't be able to make a fair comparison - at the time I was in the possession of the d51's I was on the road a lot and in better shape - so they felt roomier than the s5vx, which aren't very tight either. I'd say a tad looser which might have more to do with the low waist in the samurai's? yes, 34 in both. If they do have a slimmer cut - you might be happier with it - these weren't the most flattering cut as I said earlier.

  10. I have the s710 and s5vx - and the d51's have a much higher rise. I should also tell you that I wear a 34 waist - not fat - but definitely not demure. So any decisions you make based on my sizing will actually produce fatal results :) I've seen some classic cuts look terribly odd on thinner people.

  11. Chponglasia pm'ed me and asked that I post information about my d51's in this thread. sorry, I don't have anything useful in terms of pictures so I'll bore you all with text.

    fit details:

I don't have these jeans with me at the moment so I can't give you exact measurements, but the d51's are a very classic repro pair and should be worn in the true spirit of repro's without consulting fancy schmancy charts :) best worn boxy, awkward and short inseamed. I kid - they aren't super slim at all so they might not fit the current trend around here.

    quality:

I unfortunately have a very different aesthetic when it comes to denim and don't like contrasting fades/honeycombs. That said - these jeans gave me some intense creases around the thigh and front pockets - which might have been appreciated around here. I'm no expert but I found the denim to be vastly superior to flatheads/lvc's. I don't include samurai's/sda's only because of the lighter denim. My fullcount's still hold a special place - but that's for another thread another time.

The denim is lusciously fibrous - not slubby like my samurai's but different. I wash my jeans every week and was on the road in India for about 2 months with the d51's as my only pair and inspite of the beating (on a farm) - the indigo and the fabric held up very well.

Washing around the 'dhobi-ghats' (rural India's version of a laundromat without the coins and cutesy 'Sud's Your Duds Laundry' title) usually consists of soaking them in this huge open cesspool and beating the hell out of them on rocks. rinse and repeat. Compare this to my flatheads/lvc's which are spoilt silly by mr.haier and mrs.tide every week and still turn pale and soft.

this is not an expert review at all - so please excuse anything I may have said out of ignorance.

    ... OR BOTH??!?!

I have a pair of the d51's and highly recommend them. They are beautiful - the finish is raw and fibrous (for the lack of a better word - very different from my samurai's). you won't be disappointed. They don't have a very modern cut (which I actually like about it), so you might not be happy with the fit if you are looking for something super slim.

I don't know much about the other pair - so you might want to wait for ringring or someone well versed in the elder scrolls to weigh in before you make your decision.

  13. mellon.collie, you have presented the most sentimentally compelling reason for keeping the arcs on pockets. i love it!

    thanks tweedles.

When I first found this forum - I stumbled into the gallery-heavy thread and at the time assumed that all those fades were the efforts of some transhuman loneranger. what a hazardous life he must lead I wondered.

Logic didn't kick in for a while and the only thing that baffled me was the epicene name this mighty warrior chose :) . thanks for maintaining such a wonderful thread.

  14. Do you mind if I ask what sets the Fullcounts apart?

allo! sorry about derailing this thread. i'm a supernoob around here and I dare not voice my opinion after ringring but I know a fair bit about fullcounts and thought I'd chime in. I've worn nothing but fullcounts for about 5 years now before I found this forum. I bought a pair in japan - fell in love with them and bought nothing else after.

This was mainly due to my ignorance as my only other exposure to denim was with lvc's. After reading much about slub and selvedge on this forum I bought a few pairs of samurai, a pair of sda's and flatheads. I still stick with to wearing my fullcounts on a daily basis.

apart from the little details and overall quality ringring already mentioned - I think what really sets them apart really is the denim. It feels like no other - so light weight, so rich a texture, so joyous to wear.

I'm not very fashionable at all and though I like the stories patterns tell on old denim, I actually dislike the honeycombs and strange contrasts I have seen around here. They don't reflect the life an honest pair of jeans has lived, like the 50 year old denim my granddad used to wear. This isn't meant to be negative at all - it's just a personal preference. I much prefer the vertical fades from regular brusing that beautifully light up patches uniformly like the shy passage of seasons.

    ringring puts it beautifully -

"It's small details like these that gives the impression that whoever designed these jeans decided to go just a little bit further in every direction."

erbs: pick up a pair of fullcounts - you will not regret them. preferably ones with arcs - they make them look like they are happy and like being with their owner.
