i would encourage you to give some real thought to portland. it's much less pretentious than seattle and more affordable. It rains less here.
There is a great DIY culture that surrounds the city. Tons of independent designers here... (apparel, graphic, interactive.)
Portland also has a great FIlm and music community. it's also very bike friendly.
the hippy vibe is pretty much minimized these days and mostly revolves around college kids and specific neighborhoods.
As a whole, i think it's a great place to live.

sounds like the guide isn't too worth it. I am going to tokyo next week and was debating if i should drop the $20 on it or not...
any more thoughts?

Hello All,
My wife and I are going to the Philippines (for family stuff) then Japan(for vacation) next week....
I am searching online for a cool place to stay in tokyo that isn't too expensive. I know that is the holy grail as far as a trip to tokyo goes. I am curious to know if there are any good places to stay in Naka-Meguro? i can't find much online but it seems like a cool mellow neighborhood. any input would be helpful.
thanks so so much.
marc
p.s. the search function on this site doesn't work so hot for me so if you think it's been covered before a direct link would be so helpful.
thanks again!
