ajds - I've never tried Obenauf's. It might be better than Pecard's for shoes. Here's a good page from people who are serious about boots.
I've been using Sno Seal, which is fantastic, but extremely hard to work with.
I'll give snoseal a try- I remember using it years ago. We get plenty of rain out here to say the least.

One note on Obenauf's vs. Pecards. I went to my local Red Wings store and the guy there strongly endorsed Obenauf's over the RW brand (made by Pecards). He could be a crazed idiot- but I listened.
I went with the Obenaufs and it seems to do well for my Indys.

Has anyone found a good source for flat waxed shoelaces? I had a pair of the RW 1911s that had great laces (I returned them). Now I want something simlar for my 405s.

Thanks for the wesco mention. They are of course here in oregon. I just went three weeks ago and ordered a pair of custom jobmasters. Black, black stitching, black eyelets and hooks and lace to toe. They will take 13 weeks to complete. I will hopefully have them in mid january. I actually put orthotics in my shoes and we measured them around those. in the meantime, I just purchased a pair of the redwing gentlemen traveller and am trying to decide how I feel about those. They are a little narrow when the orthotics are put in.
Blake-
I'm interested to see how your Wesco's work out. I live here too and I've been tempted. BTW-I like your shop.
All-
Sherman Bros is offering a sale on all their Aldens - 15% off using the code "shell"
I am not shilling for them, but I bought my 405's there a couple of months ago and I am on their mailing list.
Service was good- I returned my first pair for a smaller size with no hassle, but a little slow with tracking numbers and such.
Miz- This counts as a vote for the Indys- but I haven't tried the White's.

anyone know what's the general consensus with sizing of the Alden Indy boots? I wear size 9 (Euro 42) in most shoes but fit a 8.5 in Red Wing's. Are there any pics of the Indy's with commando soles?
those AF60's look sweet as well!
I just got a pair of Indys (calfskin) that fit great- my size in New Balance 992's (easy to find) is 101/2 D US, 44.5 EU- I wear a 9/12 D for the Indys.
I returned the the pair of size 10s and it was well worth the wait.

I just found the name I was trying to think of---
Pecard's
So the questions still stands... what is the best stuff for everyday boots like Aldens and RW's?

ninja — just clean those. Saddle soap works, like coleslaw said, or leather cleaner. Lots of people here recommend Obenauf, never tried it myself. This stuff's done me well.
Nice RWs, by the way, especially the 813s.
What other leather care products to folks recommend? Someone mentioned a brand that started with P- but I can't remember the name.

Here are my new favorite shoes -Alden Indys- pictured here with my son's favorite boots (frog cordo??).
I decided to return the Red Wing GTs and keep these. I don't need two new pairs at once. That's too much breaking in, & those Red Wings were pretty stiff.

Can someone point me in the direction of a better price on the Red Wings Gentleman Travelers? Would love to save money off the Zappos price.
thanks!
-t
Zappos will price match if you call them(1-800-ZAPPOS-1 (1-800-927-7671) or 702-943-7677) , as long as another site has them in stock. I usually support the little guy, but this makes them much much cheaper and you get them quick.
Now I have to decide if I want to keep the pair of Indys or Red Wings- i don't think I need both at those prices (I sound like a cheap bastard today).

nice collection Jolla!
What did you use to polish your Indys? I have a pair on order and I like your color vs the factory.

Thanks for the notes on the fit- most of my running shoes are 10 1/2s and I like superfeet insoles if shoes don't have enough arch. The guy at Sherman Bros talked me through it and we figured a 10D would work. I'll be sure to report back.
I wish there was some real standard that every body went by (like Chuck's).
At least it is better us than for kids- my daughter is 2 and she wears a 4 in some shoes and a 7 in others.

fit is such a crapshoot- now you have me freaked because I just pulled the trigger on a pair of Alden Indys (Sherman Bros, free shipping, discount for first time buyers). I went with a 10D despite hearing that I might want to step down a size.
I like using insoles- so i hope it works out.
I wish the free return places (Zappos etc...) carried more interesting stuff.

If you order in the store they won't charge shipping- get two pair and return the ones that don't fit. I was thinking the same thing if I can get the chance.

So did anyone see these at J.Crew? I can't find them in the store and I would hate buying them before trying.0 -
I just called Renner's in KC, they only have a 10.5 C left.

i love these bad boys
Can anyone recommend something similar? - Clarks Desert Boot type shape
Haz,
Take a look at J. Crew- I'm not sure of the quality, but they had some similar looking chukkas and a sweet Red Wing they claim is exclusive to them.

Any consensus on the best place to buy a pair of the Alden Indy boots? It seems like $300 is the price no matter where you look.
A couple of stores are listed as dealers with Alden locally, but none have any stock in my size.
Great thread and discussion by the way- I can't believe I spent so much time reading about other people's shoes and enjoying it.
