  1. Congrats Eric at Corter Leather. I was browsing through this month's Esquire magazine and came across Corter Leather in the "Great American Things" gift guide!

    Link & screen cap below.

Thanks dude! Crazy experience for sure, dealt with like 20 different people just to get that one paragraph written. Just wish they hadn't murdered that sample before photographing it, no clue how they beat it up that much.

And yea Joey, that's how you do it! Good job dude.

  2. After receiving pm's from mods suggesting I buy advertising to "give back" to the forum because of some perceived level of success they came up with, the snarky "post-capitalist" and "non-commercial" closing comments of PYC is a fucking joke.

As Hollows said, without our user generated content the forum doesn't exist. Many of us have supported Superfuture for 5 years or more, buying from advertisers and adding valuable content of our own. Hell, we created enough content in PYC to generate over a quarter million page views, drawing in people from way outside the realm of this forum's core user group that ended up staying (and making the advertisers happy with page impressions).

To see that there's no support for our success in return is spit in the face.

  3. That leather wrinkling is indeed because you got a strap cut close to the belly, just make sure to inspect the straps next time and you should be fine! I'm sure we go to the same Tandy so you probably dealt with Rob- chicago screws work ok, but I'd also go with copper rivets like Simon said. That or a few rows of stitching.

If you're ever in the city feel free to swing by my shop, I've got plenty of extra strapping leather to cut a thin piece for you.

  4. Thanks dudes. Ray- really not too bad on the expense related to the value/time saving aspect. For simple card holders it's totally justifiable!

Simon- just ordered a press from Weaver, I've got a shop that lets me rent industrial presses for like $20/hr if I need something bigger. I went with the small hand press because I'm mounting it in the van I'm building out for my business. That way I can travel and work, camp and work, work on the beach, whatever. 2013 is the year the business stops running me and I start running the business, no more 16 hour days alone cutting and sewing (well...a month more of that until the rest of the dies come in!). I've started doing some events and selling in person, and being around people for the first time in 5 years has been a game changer. gonna be rad to roll up with materials, do demos and let people punch out their own leather, pick their thread and sew along with me :)

  5. corter, does the dye punch the holes for you or simply mark them for your awl?

it punches the holes! pretty cool, but super $$ to have made so you've gotta be super careful and design/redesign/test/redesign to make sure everything's in the right place.

  6. Been a while, nice to see everyone's doing great stuff. Welcome to the new folks!

Been super busy lately, one of the big things was that I had some dies produced so that I can save my hands from cutting the same thing hundreds of times and hopefully be able to do custom work again. Did my three small pieces first, and will do my other pieces in the next few months. I have the lacing holes included in the dies, because while the die itself is a bitch to design it really saves time and produces a perfect product over and over.

Next up, I did my Bottlehook in camo. It's a 3d dye sublimation process, the hooks are powder coated with a two layer job then the top layer is dyed with the pattern so it's super durable.

and last, did some more custom hardware. sweet-orr style split key rings, I designed everything here including the ring itself. Nice and heavy duty, a bit more so than the old rings of the early 1900's. Cast iron ring is made from the mold, then the graphic is stamped just like the old style.

  7. That's what I like to see onestar- nice original design work. I'd move the stitching in a little bit, it'll lay much nicer on the leather you're using and give you smoother edges. Also, look into a black edge kote for the black, you're teetering on some serious tech status there. Expand your pen carrier with cutout into multiple pieces and you've got a killer tech/heritage concept, really nice.

One thing- get a custom punch for your pen cutout ($60-80 investment) and shape it uniquely to be a signature across many products. It would be perfect every time and also save you a lot of man hours, I know those tiny cutouts are a pain in the ass.

Blackgoat- killer come back dude, hope you had a good summer! Looking great, that perf. leather is crazy!

$170? Is that a bit excessive or is Cordovan really that expensive?

Assuming that wallet is a 3x8" strip sewn together, you're looking at making 5 per sq. ft. - even at top dollar (which that cordovan does not look to be) it's $18-20 worth of material. Assuming whoever made that was a professional, it couldn't have taken more than 25 minutes of time (non burnished edges, not shined or brushed, etc). The perils of wholesale means the shop probably bought them for $80 and the customer gets charged $170.

  9. Nice snaps, corter! I owe you one for convincing me to buy that Tandy hand press. I just set 60 snaps (120 halves) in about 45 min. What a dream to use...

Hell yea dude! Makes things so much more enjoyable. I remember back when I did the Japan bracelets I got to 200 sets/hr, could probably never do that now but it makes working so much more enjoyable. What are you making with the snaps?

  10. Get your tax ID and it'll be $250! You'll have it forever, and there are plenty of other uses for it. 250 snaps would easily take me 5-6 hours to set by hand, and if you can do the same with a press in probably an hour and a half at $50/hour labor, it'll almost pay for itself in that one project.

Working on girls stuff, because I get angry emails from girls about not having girl stuff. Designing girl-specific stuff isn't my scene, so I just end up designing unisex stuff that girls use more often than guys. Tote/purse sample, it'll probably change a bit over two or three more samples

  11. Did a couple full shell wallets with RFID shielding. There's a layer of stainless steel fabric in-between the two layers of the shell that provides the protection. Crazy to think about how much $ in raw materials go into one of these things- more than the cost of many of my other wallets!

  12. Thanks! yea, I did about 500 pieces in time for their opening a month back, they've got full stock. All that's left are the key loops, the hardware just came in so those will be there in maybe 2 weeks or so. It's their in house brand though, my name's not on it. I just made it.
