  1. Anyone have any experience with Warby Parker? I was waiting for them to get their try-on pairs back, but I figure I might just take the plunge sight unseen.

I got a home try-on a couple of weeks ago. Don't even remember when I requested it but the wait was long enough that I'd completely forgotten about it by the time the confirmation email came in. I ended up ordering a pair tonight (and its the same pair that I was leaning towards after a virtual try-on). The quality seems really nice, but I only had a few days to test them out.

  2. I feel like my reception is way better on my iphone 4 than my iphone 3g. On the ride to and from work (just a couple of miles) I used to have multiple dropped calls, and always at the same intersection. I don't think I've dropped a call yet with the new phone and the clarity of the call is about equal. I've had mine in a bumper since day 1 though.

  3. Anybody running a solid NAS setup on something other than an Airport Extreme Basestation? Need dualband, probably using a 2TB WD drive; haven't found any promising alternatives. I don't mind that the Basestation only has 3 wired Ethernet ports, but was looking to spend closer to $150 than $180....

My first suggestion is to definitely NOT get a time capsule. Routers are already hot enough- whoever decided putting a hard drive in a poorly ventilated router deserves a throatpunch. Also they're not serviceable without completely tearing the thing apart so forget replacing or retrieving the drive if anything ever happens. /rant

My setup, which I'm pretty in love with, is a linksys N router with a DNS 323 attached. The 323 is basically just a network attached box that runs linux stock and allows you to plug in two 3.5" hard drives. Its also extremely customizable and I was easily able to find instructions for setting it up to run time machine. Currently have 2 750 gb drives WD drives. I do not believe my model supports 1 tb drives but its also a couple of years old so I'm sure D-link has started producing something that can handle these larger drives. The msrp is $199, but I was able to find mine on eBay with a terabyte of storage for about $150.

just installed little snitch. what the fuck.

on applications that i trust (not that i know which ones to not trust), which option do i select?

    -over any network connection

    -on the same port

    -to the same server

-to the same server and port

i don't get it. layman terms?

On applications that I absolutely trust, I select forever and over any connection. If I trust an application but don't really see why they would need access to additional ports I choose forever and same server and same port. If it's a new application that I don't know much about, its allowed a connection until I quit and to the same server and same port. If I later find the app helpful and LS keeps bugging me, I may switch it to 'forever' instead of 'until quit'.

The only risk you run by choosing incorrectly here is that LS may bug you repeatedly as an application attempts to connect over multiple ports and to different servers. I have run into problems by accidentally denying connections though, so make sure you only use that if you know for sure that a particular application does not need outgoing communications. I just looked through my rules and I only have 2 things with denied connections.

Ports are just a communication endpoint. It allows your computer to communicate with multiple applications/ computers over a single connection without interference. The server is something that you connect to over the internet and it serves information or fulfills a request. So Little Snitch is listening on the ports for outgoing communication and allows you to see what applications are sending out information, where its going (the server), and how its connecting (the port). Hope that helped

  4. What free case did you kids decide on? I already got my bumper automatically refunded. Couldn't decide on one of the free cases (need something that won't mess up my back film or front screen protector). At this point the shipping times are so ridiculous, I might as well wait to see if they add anymore options.

  5. I've been smoking some really heady stuff lately- like smoke a couple of bowls and I'm just locked to the couch and napping within an hour. Starting this morning off with large amounts of coffee and a bowl. Hopefully they work together and keep me awake.

  6. I highly suggest Applecare. It'll cover you for a total of three years from the purchase date, so two additional years after the limited warranty. Check amazon or eBay for deals. There's also a pretty decent educational discount from Apple (I remember it actually ended up being better than my employee discount on Applecare several years ago when I worked there). Applecare, especially on portables, is crucial because one repair can easily recoup the cost. Labor alone in the shop where I work is $95 an hour with some things taking up to two hours.

I'm an Apple certified technician and could fix my own stuff no problem, but I still buy Applecare because I think its a decent value. My mbp just finished its 3 year agreement and these are the things I've had replaced: 3 power adapters, 1 battery, logic board, fan, optical drive. I also replaced my own keyboard and hard drive - probably could've gotten them covered under warranty but I didn't want to wait on the keyboard and wanted to upgrade my drive.

  7. I use all Western Digitals (3: 2 750gbs a 500gb. Even my NAS has WD drives in it), but really it doesn't matter. Get one that's well priced with at least a 1 year warranty and in a case you like. For the most part they're all the same and I would suggest using disk utility to erase and reformat it before using anyway.

  8. know its locked with at&t but i think it shoudl read the simcard i installed yeah? but wont have any signal or anything right?

Right. It should not pop up 'no sim' but instead just show up no service in the left corner. What service are you trying to use this on? Most companies will sell you a replacement microsim - not sure how it works out of the states though.

  9. take out of the plastic and keep in the glass. My exp is long term storage in plastic, especially a ziploc, will change the smell and taste of the bud.

    just my two cents.

so anyone else have an opinion about this?/ how do you guys store your ish? I keep mine in whatever baggie it came in inside a glass jar like above. Don't really want to mix my stuff up and it would seem less organized, but I'm willing to get rid of the plastic bags and find smaller jars if others have noticed a difference.

  10. Did you read my post? I'm not suggesting that the problems are a figment of anyone's imagination. The issues clearly exist: a quick google or youtube search will show you that. I am suggesting that perhaps they have made an improvement on the second batch of phones. I cannot replicate the signal issues, even when purposefully putting the phone in the death grip. My coworkers who all got phones in the July 2nd shipment have noticed the same thing. I'm not sure what makes you think that a store in the mall would have 'amazing signal' (when I worked at Apple, our signal was pretty bad since it was such a congested area), but I'm willing to bet those phones are all from the initial shipment since they've been on display since launch.

Most phone companies will indeed allow you out of your contract within 30 days if you cite poor reception or coverage as your reason for leaving. My friend just switched to Sprint for the EVO for thirty days; when he decided he'd rather have the iPhone, it was a pretty seamless switch back to AT&T as long as he was within the 30 days. Of course, this was for a brand new contract. People who upgraded/ extended their old contract will probably be stuck with AT&T, but can return the phone for something else.

How should Apple deal with this? They tried giving away bumpers to people who were having issues, but people started taking advantage of that policy so they ended it. Hell, back in 2007 people sued Apple and AT&T for dropping the price on the original iPhone. I thought that was a bit silly, but its at least more warranted than suing for a phone you've had 2 weeks and won't return but won't wait for Apple to fix.

  11. ^The thing I don't understand with that lawsuit is the phone has been out less than a month. That means everyone bitching and whining is free to return the phone and cancel their at&t contract if its such a huge deal.

I just got my phone yesterday. Im not sure if they managed to make any changes in this second (July 2nd ship date) batch or what, but I live in an area with notoriously bad reception- I regularly drop calls on my 3 mile drive to and from work- but I can't replicate the antenna issue. First thing I did was try out the death grip for giggles and I stayed strong at 5 bars.

  12. I think if people opened their eyes ( the real staunch Apple followers) to some of the other options they would be pleasantly suprised with the competition's products. Not hating on those that still love the Iphone, all the power to you. I just feel that some people jump on the hype train without even realizing it

I still think its great phone man, just not as revolutionary as some think, that's all. Many of these features have been out on other phones for eons. If it serves your needs and you love it that's all that matters in the end

I'm all for hearing criticism; I would just prefer for it to be somewhat intelligent (as yours is). Just like some people hop on the hype train for Apple, some people hop on the hate train and it gets old. I quoted a couple of random bits from your posts that I totally agree with. I don't really think what Apple is doing is revolutionary; a big part of it is the packaging. The original iPhone didn't have much going for it in terms of other smartphones on the market but it brought 'smartphones' to the masses by making an UI so intuitive that your grandma can use it. That is part marketing, but its mostly making a great product that is a joy to use. ...I still drop calls like a motherfucker though.

ahh, so not worth it if you're jailbroken i assume, those features have been around for a long time with categories/cydia/etc, not to mention free apps ^^ i'll pass until the dev team releases something

I'm still on 3.1.2 since I saw no point in upgrading to 3.1.3 and having to redo my jailbreak. iOS4 looks pretty cool, but I remember during the keynote when all my coworkers were amped on things like folders and multitasking I was just thinking ...wait you guys can't do that already? Hopefully the dev team figures out a free tethering profile by the time my new phone arrives in early July; that seems like the only additional feature that I JBed my 3g for that isn't addressed in iOS4. I refuse to pay AT&T more money for mediocre service and less data just so I can tether occasionally.

  13. speechless? this shit is the same phone but with video calling? wow, so cool. that shitll get old real quick if im somewhere im not supposed to be and i my girl is wanting to video talk. funny how apple can make a video and introduce this amazing new phone but it's the same damn phone but with video calling - add some corny ass music and people go crazy to throw down some cash.

i'll stick with my blackberry and my macbook pro.

same phone? really? yea with just video calling (which necessitates a front camera... oh yeah, and a nicer rear camera with a larger sensor and LED flash, and higher resolution screen, and twice the ram of its predecessor, and the new a4 chipset which is probably underclocked but still faster than whatever the 3gs had. Also, it had a full redesign, which alone is enough to make me think wtf, you really thing this is the same phone with video calling. Sorry technology is making it harder for you to be a sleaze with your girl.

-zebra clip-on multi pen + pencil

-uniball jetstream (love this pen. Carry it in my front right pocket and use it constantly just jotting stuff down at work)

-wallet made from old Coors vinyl sign (right pocket)

-apartment building entry card (left pocket)

-iphone 3g (left back pocket - soon to be replaced)

-car, apt, work, bike lock keys (attached to my belt & tucked into back rear pocket. Not sure what they're called but I love the blue loop my keys are on. The actual attachment was awesome for a couple of months but in the last week I've almost lost my keys thee times. Not sure if it's just wearing out or what)

    - miscellaneous dog fur

  15. Based on what my friend at the Apple store told me (but truth told, they don't know shit), they're done taking reservations. You can still stand in line to try to get one on the 24th. All Apple stores should have two lines- one for reservations and one for the hopefuls. No word on how many extra stock they'll get for first come first serve though.

I was hoping to avoid the madness this time and pre-ordered on for delivery. Of course I got stuck in the e-madness of yesterday though so by the time my order went through they'd already bumped the ship date back to July 2nd. 600,000 pre-orders = wtf?

  16. Common enough. Have you tried a force eject? In my experience, if a force eject (restarting the computer and holding down the clicker before the Apple logo appears) doesn't work there's no way to retrieve it other than opening up the computer and opening up the optical drive. The new unibodies don't get compressed around the slot like macbooks, but you can also use a small flathead to make sure the catch isn't down by just running it side to side inside the opening.

edit: lol I just read your post in the marijuana thread. woops

  17. but it suuuuckssss i have 2 of them and i just stopped carrying them

i do not approve of using the blade for leverage as a handle when caplifting

also, the way the micro/jeweler driver is situated, it couldn't even reach my eyeglass hinges.. i also don't like how much force it takes to open it, and how if you're not careful you'll drop the rest of your keychain.

this thing looks like it would be more useful imoz:

want to buy. Anyone else having issues applying the coupon code? Submitting it just takes me to another page asking for the coupon code. From there the page just keeps refreshing. :(

  18. why the hell does my MBP stay on when i close the lid? I never changed any settings or preferences and its annoying

Sleep is triggered by a magnet along the right side of your display and a switch on the right side of your topcase. When the magnet is close to the switch, it triggers the computer to go to sleep. The mechanism rarely fails, but its pretty sensitive so a good whack on the right-side of the computer might have been enough to fuck something up. If you want to check it yourself, run a magnet along the righthand side of the computer with the display open and see if the computer goes to sleep. If it doesn't, you can try resetting the pmu/smc. And if that doesn't fix it, you'd probably need to take the computer in for service or start manually putting it to sleep.

  19. What are you using these apps for? I haven't really searched enough to see any screenshots, but they both seem to be itunes controllers. Been using you control:tunes + growl notifications in Leopard and Snow Leopard and I like it. I really only use it to skip songs, change playlists/artists, and occasionally ID songs though.

  20. Tim, I can tell you from experience that replacing the casing is a pretty big pain. It sounds like you actually need to replace the top case since that's where the latching mechanism is- this is just semantics but important if you want to order the correct part. This is a unibody right? To do this you'd have to remove the lower case, battery, then literally every piece of hardware in the computer (including the logic board), and even detach the display.

Imo, this is something to just let the professionals do. Also, $400 is a pretty damn good deal on it, considering the top case costs $200 direct from Apple (no markup) so you'd probably be looking at $300 or so for the part alone. Is saving 100 bucks really worth the hours you're going to spend doing this and potentially breaking another part in the process? That warning aside, ifixit.com is a pretty excellent source of replacement guides. I could also probably send you the official repair manual for your computer if you're interested. This just isn't the ideal repair for a 'noob'.
