I don't agree on taking the point size down to 12, that would be too small. As it is the navigation is clear and easy to use, two things you dont want to lose. Maybe just a couple of points down would be enough. You could try rendering your title in a different typeface or even freehand style to differentiate it from the nav text.
Agree about the grey. I know you want the framework to be 'invisible' next to the work but the grey doesn't do this quite well enough, its says 'dull' when your work is anything but. Think how a gallery presents work, elegant signage, discreet lighting.
And yep, from a usability point of view pop-ups are not great. Dynamic layers could be the way forward.

I've also heard that Blogspot is good.
Horriblyjollyjinx hosts his repeattofade blog there. Might be worth PM'ing him for advise.

Sigourney Weaver narrating huh? Interesting.
When it first aired on the BBC we had the venerable Sir David Attenborough.
We had a party over Christmas and projected the dvd on a wall behind the DJs, looked amazing.

Love tea - had 3 cups so far today.
Its such a way of life in Britain I don't even think about it as option its just always there - like the wallpaper.
Just got in to work? Have a nice cup of tea and read your emails.
Just got back from work? Have a nice cup of tea, sit down, watch the news - maybe dunk a digestive (biscuits are important too, nicely arranged on a plate if you've got guests round)
Got some bad news to tell you? Best sit down i'll put the kettle on. Any occasion warrents a tea here - just watch any UK soap.
I am partial to Earl Grey on special occasions.
