  1. Is shipping with no tracking a complete faux pas? I mean, you can still insure a package without tracking in Canada.

What i am saying is that i'd prefer to have to the potential at least to get shit from other countries, and I don't want shit from Toronto either.

I think the way to do it is to write each username and their location on two pieces of paper, and put them in two sacks. You could put an * next to names that want continental exclusivity, and if they draw someone across an ocean, you can just redraw.

  2. just got my roommates and they are slowly killing my buzz.

    they sleep before 10pm

pretty conservative and from the south

    ugly CWGs

Are you in a dorm or an apartment? If you can, switch out of that shit/move. That is a bad sign in NYC.

  3. I know this is because the best video thread got moved to superculture, but please stop posting amusing youtube videos in here. This is for the next level. Not the popular meme video of the week (unless what makes it popular is that is of the next level.

  4. went to work to shoot shit, out the back having lunch with people on break and this fucking ferret showed up outa nowhere, caught and bagged it and this girl said she would take it to the animal care centre, got this phonecall like 10mins later, girl crying, ferret escaped in her car and she almost crashed.

    This is hilarious.

  5. It's not like other cities in that regard. There are cheap places in lots of different neighborhoods. I don't know how much drinking costs in Brighton, but compared to London, New York is very cheap. The only problem is the weakness of the pound.

  6. Can't believe Chris Paul wants to be traded. Well, I guess I can understand where he's coming from; Hornets are going nowhere for the next 2 or 3 years with they way they're constructed now.

But I was always under the impression that CP3 was a good, loyal person and to suddenly turn his back on his team and city like this, it hurts a lot as a basketball fan and makes me appreciate Kevin Durant even more.

I mean, it's not like he grew up there. The Hornets have done a pretty shitty job of building a team around him, and I'm sure he'd like to play in a city that appreciates him.

  7. the new yorker and nyt reviews for inception were generally unfavorable from what i can remember. so this whole new yorker anti-nolan shit might have some truth.

some of these guys need to stop talking shit and over-intellectualizing movies though. it's a fucking movie, enjoy it. you are not going to find answers to the mystery of life in a fucking movie. no one should expect that from a movie. not even from the "artsy" ones.

Jesus Christ, you're right. Who thought it was a good idea to let critics critique a movie? Next we'll be letting chefs cook and nurses empty bedpans!

    ...

Nothing will ever teach you the meaning of life, in the way that you seem to imply "objectively". On the other hand, most of the word would say they get their meaning of life from book(s) (the Bible, Koran, etc.). Movies, being an example of art, may not be capable of a such a enormous task*, however at best as with other forms art they can provide some kind of different perspective or view or meaning to life. For me, movies are part of the meaning of life. For you, obviously not.

As for why New York is anti-Nolan, it's less conspiracy theory based than you think. AO Scott's review was a marginal favourable, but Rotten Tomatoes took it as a rotten. David Edelsteinn doesn't like the logistics of the film http://nymag.com/movies/reviews/67155/ Armond White of the NYPress is a renowned contrarian. The Village Voice finds his artistic pretensions lacking in depth, and the guy from the New York Observer found it incomprehensible. You may find these last two claims dubious, but I think they are potentially valid (I haven't seen it yet).

Here is AO Scott's piece on this whole business which you might find interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/movies/25scott.html?_r=2

Lastly, do you really want everyone to like everything you like? I bet plenty of people hate my favourite films, and while I think it's a shame because I get so much joy out of them as I do, it's ultimately good because otherwise life would be very boring.

*The documentary Trekkies provides a pretty serious counter argument.

In summation: subjectivity; lots of different opinions = good

  8. no hate.. half expected you to say "the I woke up one day and realized i'm 40"

I can testify to the connections part, i've been riding my moms coattails in my field of edu (nuclear engr) on and off for the past four years. makes me feel shitty at times but I can honestly say i pull my weight.

Whatever. You can't choose who you are related to; might as well make the most of it.

My dad once gave me a great piece of advice that's essentially just "never look a gift horse in the mouth", but more directly "Never turn down an opportunity for a trivial reason".

  9. Heading to New York for Rock the Bells this year.

Never been to the States before, let alone New York. So I really don't know much.

Gathered up a few spots from the various threads but anything more current would be appreciated.

I have my eye on fast food places we don't have in the UK such as White Castle, Popeyes, In n out etc + local places or whatever we find on the way.

I'm on a student's budget and i've yet to find accommodation. Will be looking for a cheap hotel, so if you guys have any suggestions that would be awesome.

Anything cool that I may not otherwise know about?

    Thanks in advance..

As far as accommodation goes, maybe look into renting an apartment depending on how many of you there are.

As far as food goes, don't waste your time with White Castle or Five Guys. You can get better food for very low prices. Not to bash those kinds of places, as I have recently stuck up for them in another thread, but if you are only in NYC for a few days you might as well hit up some better eats for similar prices.

Fried Dumpling in Chinatown is very cheap and good. La Superior is bomb mexican food in Williamsburg that is quite reasonable. Pretty much any pizza place is going to be very good in NY, and the better places are very much worth going to. There is good ramen in NY that is quite descent (it's very popular right now), very good BBQ, you name it really.

Drinking can also be quite cheap there, if you do it right. Beer can be bought at any corner store, which are everywhere, and a lot of bars have happy hour specials and stuff.

I'll be there for Rock The Bells as well, so maybe we can meet up at some point, though I'll be with a bunch of friends.

  10. Last year, it went till at least about the time you are getting there, I think. Hard to say for sure though, and of course these things change!

  11. The subway is very safe unless you ride the mainlines to their extremes, and wander around with your visors and fanny packs and "I heart NY" shirts on.

If you want to go see all that touristy bullshit, why don't you get on one of those tour buses.

  12. Fast food just needs to be understood for what it is. To me, it shouldn't be compared to "real food" (for lack of a better term), because it should serve a different purpose. It's low on nutritional value, and makes no claims otherwise (usually), but can be very tasty. To me the worst food, in North America, at least, are those chain family restaurants like Montana's, TGIFridays, Applebys, etc. Those places are relatively expensive, and pass themselves off as good, real food, but just fast food with other pretensions. For $4 or $5, fast food isn't a bad use of money. But at those places with their crappy steaks and 900 calorie salads, where the average meal price is like $20, there are always way better places to go.

  13. Terry Gilliam is great. I think I'll hate Inception, or at least, really dislike certains parts while admiring others (such as been my feeling about Nolen in the past).

Is it super lame that I am really disappointed to see that this girl I met lists "Crash" as one of her favourite movies on facebook? Unless she means Cronenberg, and then I'm sprung, but otherwise, this is why I hate facebook.

  14. I wish the Kings didn't have such shitty jerseys, but since I think they'll be one of the most entertaining teams to watch next year, and I might as well start supporting them.
