Spread the Lead what if we only had a pencil?
October 16 - November 20
gallery hanahou
611 Broadway, Suite 730 NYC
Opening reception: October 16, 6-8 pm
UPDATE: We are now receiving the pieces for this exciting show: pencil artwork from digital artist Kenzo Minami, fashion artist Sara Singh, and others who are finding expression for their creativity in new and varied ways through this humble medium. We are thrilled to present this rare glimpse of works that at once demonstrates the artists' skilled draftsmanship and reveals their playful, experimental sides.
What if the history of art began and ended with graphite, and your local art supply store was little more than a pencil outlet? For this group show, gallery hanahou has challenged artists from all backgrounds and mediums to drop their brushes and computer mice and see what they can do with only a B2 pencil and a piece of paper. Just as compelling as the results on the gallery walls will be the visitors' reactions to so many artistic viewpoints rendered in shades of gray. The pencils the artists use to create their work will be included with sale of the artwork.
Participating artists include digital maestro Kenzo Minami, peaceable painting duo APAK, and Robbie Guertin, who plays in the band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and has collaborated with other artists on album artwork.
Several artists, including Robbie Guertin, will attend the opening reception on October 16.

July 10 - August 29

gallery hanahou
611 Broadway, Suite 730, NYC
This summer, London artist Chris Long is celebrating childhood with This is Fun, a solo show at gallery hanahou featuring his new original works of children in their natural environments. With bright acrylics, Chris captures the exuberant feelings of children when adults have stepped out of the picture and kids are free to be themselves.
This is Fun will also feature a painted mural by the artist and a display of drawings by local kids. The gallery will be furnished with Bam-Bam Table & Chairs sets courtesy of Hic-cup Children’s Furniture by Christopher Ross (hic-cup.com).
Grownup visitors will smile to see something familiar and truthful in Chris’s images of childhood, and young visitors will be encouraged to explore their own creativity with a free coloring book of illustrations by Chris. Please RSVP [email protected] to attend the opening with the artist on July 10.
This is going to be fun!
About Chris Long (chrislongstudio.com)
Widely recognized for his funky images of glamorous women, Chris Long has worked in commercial illustration for over 20 years. In 2003, he created the character designs for the animated commercials of Mattel's MyScene toys, and his illustrations frequently appear in magazines and on the covers of popular books in the US and the UK. His many clients include QVC, Glamour, Penguin Books, BBC Worldwide, Vogue, Perrier, Pearson and The New York TImes.
Chris's illustrations of children are inspired by memories of his own childhood and by watching his son grow up in an area of South London that is lively with kids at play.

May 22 - June 25 2008

611 Broadway, Suite 730 NYC

Talk and workshop with the artist, "What Does Sound Look Like?": May 23, 11 am (RSVP required to attend)
gallery hanahou presents the musically-inspired artwork of UK artist Marcus Oakley (marcusoakley.com), whose cheery paintings capture the color, form, and sentiment of various songs from the 1970s and '80s. This syneshestically-pleasing collection of new original works will delight the eyes and beckon the ears to hear sounds from decades past.
Please join the artist for the opening reception on Thursday, May 22, 6-9 pm at gallery hanahou. RSVP [email protected] to attend.
The artist will also hold a talk and workshop, titled "What Does Sound Look Like?," on May 23, 11 am at gallery hanahou. (This event is free of charge, but please RSVP [email protected] to attend.)

More about Pictoral Aural
"Pictoral Aural" is a showing of new works made by Marcus Oakley that comprise visual interpretations of music. The works - beguilingly simple and direct - are comprised of abstract and pictorial imagery derived from Marcus's particular worldview. The 1970s and '80s are clearly a huge influence on Marcus's work, in terms of fashion, design, music, pastimes, crafts, and architecture. Some of the musical style and hybrid forms alluded to in the works include: soft rock; synth rock; folk; folk rock; country; lo-fi; independent; electronica and experimental musics. While each piece is based on a song, there is no overarching system. Marcus notes, "some of the works might illustrate the lyrics or the title of the song, while other pieces are expressions of how the song makes me feel - and others might be somehow trying to analyze songs in term of color, form, and structure."
"Pictoral Aural" reminds us of how music can fuse the senses. It can prompt us to "see" sound; or "hear" color, form and structure in the movement of sound waves through the air - and it can take us out of the present and project us into the past or future. It is clear that part of music's power is that it can't be pinned down to just one meaning or effect. This chimes with Marcus's overall philosophy of positivity and appreciation of how we can find inspiration all around us. Commenting on the works, he notes that "the images are also simply about things I like drawing: animals, people, trees, buildings and sometimes abstract patterns."
Marcus discusses "Pictoral Aural" and his new work in an interview with Mary Jo Matsumoto on Trust Your Style:

In recent years, Marcus's personal work has been inspired by the music, architecture, fashion, and typography of the 1970s. He has exhibited his drawings and paintings in solo shows in London, New York, Milan, and Edinburgh.
In 2008, a book of his work titled The Idea of Something was published by Izrock Pressings.

OPENING RECEPTION April 10, 6-9 pm
Japanese avant-garde art collective ALFORT transform gallery hanahou into an enchanting wonderland, starring the iconic doll Blythe.
"Lilliput ~ my little friends" is a scene from the imaginary Lilliput ballet, in which you, the hero or heroine of the story, fall into a deep sleep and are whisked away to a foreign land. You awake to find yourself on the shore of unconsciousness in this immersive installation of dreams, fantasy, and memory.
The exhibit will also feature digital and watercolor artwork by Naito Yamada.
Please join the artists for an opening reception Thursday, April 10, 6-9 pm. RSVP [email protected].
About ALFORT (www.theatre-alfort.com)
Formed in 2005, the avant-garde art collective ALFORT creates artwork around the concept of a fantastical balled company whose productions star the fashion doll Blythe. The five members of ALFORT are Aya Fujimoto, Miyuki Odani, caolu, chai, and Naito Yamada.
About Naito Yamada (www.nuit.jp)
Manga artist and ALFORT creative director Naito Yamada's artwork expresses her unique perception of everyday life. Different from traditional Japanese magna, Yamada's work is created for an adult audience, and her many publications have found popularity among multiple generations.
Yamada usually creates her artwork entirely digitally, but for for this show, she has used watercolor to paint over digital prints for one-of-a-kind pieces.
About Blythe (www.blythedoll.com)
Originally produced by Kenner Co. in 1972, the Blythe doll was a toy store flop due to her odd proportions and spooky eyes that switched among four colors.
In 2000, CWC reintroduced Blythe to the public with a more grown-up image as a fashion model with a daring sense of style. Blythe's popularity quickly exploded in Asia, and since then, CWC has produced over 50 different editions of the doll, with most of them promptly selling out.
Blythe is now adored worldwide by fashion-conscious collectors, and she is reinvented every year by top designers who participate in CWC's annual Blythe Doll Charity Fashion Exhibition.

In the 21st century, illustration is more popular than ever in branding, advertising, and fashion. This September, gallery hanahou is teaming up with the artists of CWC Group to present the public with an exhibit of international commercial illustration from recent years, encompassing everything from collaborations with top fashion designers to global ad campaigns to children's books. Projects big and small are represented, for a comprehensive study of the latest trends and innovations in the marketable image.
The artist-selected commercial projects are accompanied by glimpses into each artist's creative process and personality via sketches, inspirational photographs, and non-commercial work. As the artists behind the commercial art emerges, the show takes on multilayered meanings for visitors: creative professionals may find inspiration for new projects, art students will gain insight into a compelling profession, and the general public will discover a fresh perspective on the captivating images they see every day.

CWC International and gallery hanahou are pleased to announce the opening of Stina Persson's first U.S. solo show at gallery hanahou in New York!
Stina introduced a new vibe to the world of fashion illustration with her combination of raw and traditional media with digital-age techniques. For the first time, gallery hanahou will exhibit Stina's personal work that has not been digitally manipulated; at once enchanting and morbid, these new pieces draw viewers in with their unconventional glamour when seen in person.
Stina is is recognized worldwide for both her lush, ethereal watercolors and edgy street-style inks. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines and publications, including Laird Borrelli's Fashion Illustration Next and Die Gestalten Verlag's Illusive, for which Stina composed the cover illustration.
You can view more of Stina's work at the CWC-i website (www.cwc-i.com) or at Stina's personal website (www.stinapersson.com).
We hope you will join the artist on May 24th 6pm- 9pm for the opening of this exciting solo show. The show will run from May 24th - July 6th 2007.
