  1. Moved to Long Beach at the end of may. Work out of my house so I'm not getting a car ( so I'm not looking for road trip recommendations to West Hollywood, LA, etc. YET.) Any suggestions for things people like to do at night or any thing upcoming?

I've been doing a pretty good job of entertaining myself. Que Sera to see live music on Fridays, 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, Prospector on Wednesdays and Fridays (karaoke yes but everyone's getting so nuts it's great.) Meetups at the Queen Mary and Hilton(?) And I hit a few dive bars to on 4th St too.

I'm a huge music fan but I realize I may have to settle for local acts (which isn't bad because I here LA is the place to be moreso than even NY for musicians these days). Any bands I should see? Are there places for house music that a single straight guy could go hang out at or no? I don't mind mixed crowds at all but maybe not when I'm by myself.

Are there like the 3rd Saturday of every month go to X because it's packed or there's a good music act? Or maybe Thursday nights are particulary good in downtown Long Beach at a certain place? Happy hours at Y are wild? Thanks as always, superfuturers!

  2. Anyone having problems with Soulseek? Used to be you had to use the Wishlist for local bands, but now? No Age.... nothing. Lee "Scratch" Perry.... nothing. It's pretty much constant now. It's not that it doesn't work, but is defintely holding out on some files that I know are out there and online.

A pretty convenient glitch for the record industry. (Kinda like Hypem getting bought out and not being nearly as user-friendly now IMO.)

Any fixes or suggestions? Any one notice this too? Is there a way to ensure I have as much access as possible to Soulseek's P2P content cuz right now I know I don't. Thank you!

  3. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH SOULSEEK MUSIC DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE? Mine seems to be automatically offline since I added my latest iPod hardware. ANY FIXES? Do I uninstall and reinstall? Is there a better solution then that? IS SOULSEEK just not that good now? Please let me know your suggestions. Thx.

    And back on topic:

Latest downloads before soulseek went screwy were Kid Sister remixed by Mstrkrft, and Pilooski's respin of a Franky Valli song.

  4. Anyone have any suggestion on where to download house music samples or sets (outside of Lime Wire-like softwares as I can't afford viruses?) www.hypem.com is nearly devoid of house music.

Know of good mp3 blogs, etc. for house? Your suggestions are appreaciated. As stated before, I prefer traditional deep-groove Chicagoesque house moreso than the nu-rave/electro. (No offense though...it's all good.) Your suggestions are appreciated. Thx.

  5. Emo Thug 2 stuff. ("I Ain't Evah Scared" is tits.)

Elvis Presley's "Lil' Sister." Didn't know I was a big fan of his but the guitar on it really pops. Check it out!

J Dilla's Welcome 2 Detroit (think I've actually BOUGHT this twice now. Oh well.)

The Pretenders' "Message of Love" (live)

Carlos Sanchez remixing a bunch of unheard of's on a house mix called "Pink."

Johnny Cash's "What is True?" Not his best but it's okay.

  6. Yes, I saw one once too (in Lake Orion, MI.) I'm not going to describe it so as not to get the 'crazy finger' pointed my way, but what I saw was pretty much what you saw. There were three of us -- big guys too -- but honestly, it's kinda scary when it happens.

Unfortunately, the reactions I get are also, identical to yours. I don't blame people though. It's not something you see everyday, but I suspect most people don't wholly doubt it...big as the universe is and everything.

  7. I am with you. I talk about that album all the time. I some times sing "A pretty girl in her underwear" to my girlfriend (poorly, I can barely play the bass!) AND my best friend was in town visiting on Monday and that album set came up out of the blue; he was raving about it. So, that's two of us that are with you...two very smart f-ckin' people I might add. ;)

  8. Lounging is the new dancing.

Dressed up is the new dressed down.

    Quiet is the new loud.

    X is the new Y.

Put 2006/2007's most overused cliche into its 'shallow' grave by getting incredibly stupid with it. Your turn please!!!!!! No wrong answers here!

  9. I'm leaving for San Diego tomorrow and staying on Pacific Beach for a week. Lst time I was there I stayed downtown (for a biz conference.) However, MARQUES WYATT and MIXMASTER MIKE were both spinning who I got to see. That set the bar pretty high. I love the beach scene but if ANYONE HAS ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HIGH-END CLUBBING OR HEARING GREAT MUSIC from the 7th to the 14th sure would appreciate! Thank you jetsetters, and locals!!!!!

  10. Nothing too fancy but I downloaded AFTERHOURS IBIZA (Deluxe Addition). It is really quality house music witH the modern electro edge. Any way. It's like 5 hours of music for 9 bucks from iTunes. Mostly European dj's of whom I wasn't terribly familiar but it's really good. Gui Baratto, Thug F-cker, 16 Bit Lolitas, Dark Globe, Riot in Belgium. They even got some Peter Bjorn John and Gossip mixed in there. (No...it's NOT standing in the way of control btw.) I'm mentioning it here because I think fans of the electro sound as well as traditional house would both like it. It's nice.

  11. with the exceptiion of Kool Keith, I know exactly what you mean. Nerd rap is normally liked by folks whose music background isnt grounded by black music (I mean they didnt grow up w/ certain music around them).

btw...Where out south are you from? I would have never guessed someone from the Southside is on SF

Hey, Jilla. Check your inbox. I sent you a private message. Southsiiiiiiiiiiiide!!!!!

  12. With the exception of 80s act Basehead and Blackalicious I just can't get into non-traditional hip hop. I tried. I checked out Edan, Anti Pop Consortium, MC Paul Barman, Kool Keith. Didn't like it.

Give me Jay-Z, Young Dro, and Lil' Wayne over COLLEGE RAP any day. No offense. I wanted to like it but was surprised to find that I find the gangsta rap better NOT because of the lyrics but the producers in the background twiddling the knobs for these guys.

I think they have more money to find the very best and (with the exception of P Diddy and Kanye) these guys don't mind taking the money and staying out of the spot light. ALTHOUGH, YOU WILL LOVE 'PETESTRUMENTALS' BY PETE ROCK very ambient and acid jazzy without being 'artier-than-thou'. Actually, that last sentence is probably the short version of my response. I mean it. That is one of those albums that any time you put it on SOMEONE says, "Who's this?"

  13. Okay I've seen this thread a million times without posting or reading, but I'm glad I did because ZOMG...! That first photo of food looked unbelievably good. I don't think the OP should be able to post that ewithout inviting the enture Super Future community to have dinner cooked by his/her mom. When are we coming over?!

That beging said, I just had a can of just campabell black bean soup with a half can of soup and a half a can of milk mixed in and diced scallion onions on top as well as a side of steam breobrocolli.. IT was really good and simple. I recommend it.

  14. Stumbled on a duo called AWESOME SNAKES who I've been digging lately. They have a do-it-yourself attitude along the lines of EAGLES OF DEATH METAL but with a catchy punk edge rather than EoD's early 70s guitar-rock sound.

Saying if you like one you will like the other though, is NOT a stretch. Both are a ton of fun.

  15. Here's my favorite from list....

The story: When the band regrouped in the late 1960s, their new manager changed their name from Silence to Mott the Hoople, after a novel of the same name about a circus freak.

Why it's ridiculous: First of all, we don't know anyone who's ever read, or even heard of the novel. We asked a professor of mid-20th century circus freak literature if he'd read it, and he punched us in the stomach for making up such a stupid sounding novel. Also, calling anything Mott the Hoople basically begs one to enquire what the hell a Hoople is, for which of course there's no good answer. It's basically the band name version of the joke that goes "You've got some updoc on your shoulder!" Only when the person replies, "What's up, doc?" you say, "I have no idea, something about a circus freak."

    LMAO

  16. I'll start.

    The runner up.... Belly.

My personal least favorite name.... Dappled Cities.

Reminds me of an afterschool special I once saw about a 'developmentally disabled' kid who ran around going....

    "Dapple!! Dapple!! Dapple!!"

Throwing green beans on the floor...

    "Dapple!! Dapple!! Dapple!!"

    Punching himself in the head...still....

    "Dapple!! Dapple!! Dapple"

    Regardless of talent....

    "Dapple!! Dapple!!"

What are some band/dj/whatever names that you don't like?

    "Dapple!! Dapple!!"

  17. Just got a replacement ipod today that's not set up yet, so i'm just going with the last 10 on my "Recently Played" list on my iTunes. Hopefully that counts.

    T.I. - Respect this Hustle

Hot Water Music - Trusty Chords

    Snowden - Black Eyes

    New Pornographers - Use It

Innerzone Orchestra (Carl Craig) - Programmed

Bruce Springsteen - O Mary Don't You Weep

    The Harlem Shakes - Carpetbaggers

Outkast - Where are my panties?

Cloud Cult - A Good God

    Tragically Hip - Bobcaygeon

  18. thats depressing. and lame.

I can't be nice on this one. This coming from the same forum that is now revisiting old Cameo albums and declaring them brilliant for the "drunk guy yelling in the background."

You want to be trendy fine, but I survived the eighties. Take it from those of us who were alive then. The eighties weren't cool UNTIL Nirvana. Sure, I'd rather be Cameo alive then Kurt Cobain dead, but not without thinking about it for a sec.
