  3. "Do I know you?" The mystery guy replies, "Is your friend Ryan? (my government name)"

Then the mystery guy says, "I am Chicken."

You know you got it bad when you recognize people from Superfuture by their selvage denim. It was truly a Superfuture moment...

Very SuperFuture secret agent of you...

The bird flies at Midnight., over the self edge at dawn... ca caw...

    No secret handshake?

  4. I have nothing but good to say about Cordwinder, he's been helpful, and though I don't know if I'm ordering supplies from Osaka at this time he did come through with samples for me, which has me leaning towards it being definitely possible.

    Love the standing shot.

  5. Im in sales, exporting Japanese fabric.

Hi! I'm PMd you a couple of days ago with specifics and details.

Maybe if you aren't familiar with messages here and you read this note you'll check your mail and contact me.

I sent you a specific request at the start of the weekend.

    Thanks for everything! :)

  6. I dont have experience exporting to the US so I'll have to speak to my shipping people about it.

Here it's as simple as filing a form and attaching it to the package, but I have no idea about shipping from Japan. Customs forms are free from the post office.

    I'll PM you.

  7. that single product better be freaking exclusive and in high demand otherwise he's in debt.

How exclusive it is doesn't matter, whether or not you can sell it at a profit does. High demand, yes it had better be.

that idea's like selling staplers, only finding out that people aren't really interested in buying many staplers.

my point exactly, you had better make damn sure you are buying something you can market and sell.

You are better off buying one brand of staplers you are pretty sure you can sell and proving it to yourself than you are guessing which one's might sell and purchasing a collection of odds and ends that might hit or miss. Maybe being a stapler salesman isn't your life's calling, or is something you're not good at.

The reality is, you probably can't afford that kind of variety. Especially not for the sake of a guessing game - which is what a small business owner is playing. Trouble is, most people aren't very good the first time they play.

so what the fuck are you going to do with the thousands of staplers in the back?

    hand out staplers for Christmas.

The reality is that markup on fashion apparel is low. Margins are narrow. How low some of the owners here can tell you, and how hard it is to be selective and how good of a choice you have to make when buying for your customer they can also tell you.

When it comes to buying, a bad decision doesn't get better with age. The product you can't sell today doesn't become any more valuable in three months. That's why items are 40% 60% and 80% off.

I've spent hundreds-of-thousands of dollars of other people's capital and felt nothing, but I can tell you how painful it is to loose five-thousand dollars of my own capital to bad decisions, as any business owner can. When you make your decision, make sure you're sure.

Speaking of fashion apparel, $1,000 barely gets your feet wet with a brand. $3,000 is modest. With high-end apparel even more so.

When someone is down to deciding on brand name or shop name with forum friends I assume a little shared wisdom and friendship might be in order.

I'll ask the poster? How many $5,000 mistakes can you afford to make at once?

One is better than five, and if you can afford to make five start with a single one so that you can manage the damage with less heartache which affects the bottom line.

  8. Before this turns into Hustle and Flow the denim edition, I have coffee to drink and denim to sew.

There's all the annecdotes I can do without being a professional life coach, and lessons learned through lots of dollars spent and an infinite amount more of time.

Good luck with the shop - if you are searching for models I suggest some lovely ladies from Philly as a business model, I'm certain you can scan through the archives here and learn more about them, especially since there are bigger and bolder things in their future with the new shop.

They are the perfect example of moving from the bedroom or living room to the downtown boutique, but there's a lot of other success stories here too.

    Good luck with it.

  9. It's like making an album and finding out record labels aren't beating down the door.

It'll cost you $2,400 to record your album.

When you walk into the studio to record your music make sure it's what you want to hear, what you've got to say - not what you think people want to hear because it's marketable.

Record like it might be the last thing you could ever afford to put on tape - the last dollar you could ever spend on music.

Carry that philosophy to your store and you'll do fine. Afterall, there truly isn't that much difference between the two.

You're spending three-thousand dollars, at the end of the day at least you'll have something to listen to that sounds good to your ears - buy what you want with your cash, I'm sure your friends and customers will do the same.

  10. I imagine anyone with a killer name in the mecca of denim conversation on the net will probably keep it to themselves, or are selling jeans through their own shop - either web or location.

I can suggest this creative idea, consider choosing yourself a single product and focusing on that one brand - become successful selling one brand and then start to make choices.

In terms of the name, here's my sage advice - This is something you are going to be spending countless hours and dollars developing, make sure it's something personal to you. The name itself should be worth 16 hour days, eating ramen in trade for a pile of jeans 4' tall in your closet and spending thousands of dollars every month in a gamble that you'll be able to trade your product to friends.

Make the name something very personal to you.

  11. Man...that's a LOTTA denim, bro...a WHOLE lot! How/where do you store all that??

In terms of space, it isn't that much denim... It would fit on one side of a persons closet.

100 yards on a roll is about 5' tall and 1.5' in diameter, the detail is in the weight

I recommend the Shark Intelli-Sew, its a nice digital machine in the neighborhood of $300, and also consider the value of a quality steam-iron since you'll be doing quite a bit of pressing with the denim and most other materials.

Good luck with the perfect pair, or perfect 150 pairs...

  12. cool!! did you get some selvage denim in hk and make jeans too?

if i manufacture them i wont be using the fake gucci selvage..... in fact i pob wont use selvage at all, i only used it for those because it was the right weight and the selvage details are all very nice but not really needed.

after some pricing guesstimates i think i could make them to sell at about $135 - $150 us depending on denim used and factory/manufacturer

I absolutely love the jeans you constructed with the squiggle legs...

As I come to be around Superdenim more often when I happen to have a free moment, if you might be interested I'd offer you the opportunity for additional denim cuts if you decide to manufacture on your own, or create a handful of pairs on a more limited basis.

I'm not faced with a dilemma, though I did notice that on some of the sku's when I'm ordering a quantity of 100 yards on a roll, there will sometimes be 65 yards remaining with the distributor, an amount less than they would prefer to sell to a second customer, even though they'll cut and ship my 100 of the 165 yards...

Since I don't have the buying or storage capacity or need for the additional 65 yards, if it would happen to be something you'd be interested in I am happy to message you with the details when an opportunity is available...

message or email me if you're ever interested...

I love the denim you've created, thanks for sharing with everyone.

  13. I want to stitch a design onto one of the pockets of my KMW 1980s. I'm inspired by the Sugar Cane designs on the Okinawa, and Hawaii 40401. Any tips, points on how to go about doing this?

I'm handy with sewing with a needle and thread, and am competent with patching and all that. Just looking for pointers.

Its a challenge, and if you don't have much experience sewing you could definitely create a permanent issue with your denim, you will also need a handful of specific tools and some equipment.

Remove the pocket with a seam ripper.

Transfer your design onto tissue paper after creating a complete and final image on your artboard, use the pocket as your outline template.

Secure the tissue with either a pin, a bit of tape or a tested spray adhesive depending on the surface you ultimately choose to have the design drawn or printed onto.

    Stitch the design.

Tissue paper can be torn away, or should come away easily in a wash, though if you decide to wash you could seriously alter the size of the pocket.

Attach the pocket with a sewing machine.

You could also use tailors chalk to draw the design directly onto the pocket, I'm more trusting of the chalk than of the pens and wax chalk is not the best possible choice, go for the solid powdered chalk wedges.

If you need to remove rivets, they will be damaged and will need to be replaced with alternate hardware.

Time and a needle nose plier with electrical or hockey tape might be a solid bet for removing hardware, depending on the specific piece you're removing.

Good luck with the pocket design...

  14. I have found a bunch of old levis and was wondering if I bought a bottle of RIT black dye, and dyed my jeans, and wore them, would they fade?

Denim indicates wear because about 20% of the yarn recieves indigo dye on an average pair of jeans, as the indigo fades with wear and wash in an uneven and natural fashion, the bleached yarn begins to become visible with time...

  15. if you want to do it right, its going to be expensive. black is a very very hard color to get and requires a lot of dye (and most of it will end up going down your drain)

go to dharmatrading.com and it will give you instructions on how to use their dyes.

    Yes.

I also agree with the Procion, and for the person who had used RIT dye, I'd estimate you'll need about 3 times the amount of dye you used, the average pair of jeans is close to 3 yards when you make your calculations...

  16. Thanks for the reply.

Wont black dye also give it a non-jeans look with coloring the weft?

Denim is a twill with indigo and bleached (white) yarns, if you flat dye the garment the entire piece will become a solid color, with the indigo or previously dyed portion taking on a darker effect, unless you dye in several passes...

Many black jeans are flat dyed twill, its your personal preference...
