  1. Velo-Orange is pretty dope. I've been living vicariously through my girlfriends bike, putting new basket on the front, new pedals, new bars.

Is there any kind of bar where I can just swap the hoods on her drops sideways or something? I remember something on Velo-Orange a while ago.

Look into a Mustache bar. They get mixed reviews from people, but for a commuter/around-towner, they do just fine. Nashbar makes one, Nitto does as well. Personally, I would go for the Nitto. I've used them on my touring rig and enjoyed them. They were fine on shortish rides (30-40 miles), but anything beyond that was a bit strenuous on my hands. Still, they are much more versatile than a flat bar and you can use aero levers on them.

  2. Girlfriend just picked up a Raleigh One Way on the cheap. Digging it so far, some pretty nice components came stock (Cane creek headset, brooks saddle, etc) and it's a great ride for commuting. She wants some panniers, any suggestions? something canvas and leather in a darker shade (navy or black) Also, how do they mount exactly? Do you need a special kind of rear rack?

For panniers, I just received some Ostrich panniers. They are a very classic design (essentially Gilles Berthoud style, but made in Japan). Check Gilles Berthoud as well--more color options as well rather than the forest green Ostrich panniers. I'm not sure of the pricing, but I imagine they are more expensive than the Ostrich bags. Decent size, not so decent price at around $122 per pannier (worth it imo). They're made of a heavy canvas with leather straps that you attach to the rack. And yes, she will need a rack for the panniers. Most any rack will work assuming that her bike has braze-ons.

  5. i apologize if this has been asked already, but would anyone know where the current '71 517 denim comes from? Oddly, the ones i have dont have a tag on the inside.

  6. I have a pair of black skull 5010xx in size 31 up for grabs. they have been worn probably 10 times. no cosmetic damage, washing, fading, hemming, or rips. The only exception is that i removed the dagger/cross stitching on the back pocket (see picture) and minor creasing from regular wear. the only reason i put these up for sale is that i realized im more of a blue jeans guy. my loss your gain.

    price: $160 shipped (US only)

    waist: 15.5 across

for reference i wear a 27 in new standards and have a 31 inch natural waist. these fit very similar to the NS.

  7. military surplus stores are the best imo. nice thick gauge beanies that can be slouched if need be. only 6 bucks too. on that note, check mil surplus stores for jackets etc. most have boxy cuts, but if you are handy with a sewing machine it can save you some cash.

    check ebay as well.

i havent heard too much about these. i remember a thread way back when, but only partytaco had some lee repo's. had these for about a year, but just now got around to wearing them.

info on these? i recall them being natural indigo, but i could be wrong. more detailed pics can be provided.

  9. i have been smoking for about 4 years and i quit about 3 months ago. i slipped up a couple of times while i was intoxicated, but other than that i haven't had one. one day i just decided to quit cold turkey.

if you feel good about quitting it makes it a bit easier. definately a hard habit to kick. fuck....now i want to smoke after all this talk.

  10. HJJ, what does the 551 fit like? and when were the original 551ZXX (not the repro) made by levi's?

i believe these came out in the early 60's. it was one of the first pre-shrunk levis you could buy (if my memory serves me right). although i havent tried these on, the images i have seen they look like the LVC 1955.

  11. you might also try dying the raw jeans black. i tried it out on a pair of raw black levi's (although they have been washed a few times before) and it turned out great. just make sure that if you do it, they are 100% cotton.

  12. although many of the replies are helpful, only one of the above mentioned jeans are overdyed black. also, long is not a 34 inch inseam. 36in+ post soak (im about 6'3 and 140lbs).

seenmy is clairvoyant. first the long length skulls, now long and skinny overdyes.
