  1. Blake? As in the shop on 23rd in Portland?

Damn I didn't realize these were being carried outside of selfedge, need to go check them out.

Yes, we were sent a sample and I loved everything about this jean. We have them in stock and they are even better than expected. They are amazing. I have a personal pair that I hot soaked so you can see how much they shrink. come check them out.

  2. it is interesting that I hear a common theme of wanting the product being made in the states, yet we are all wearing denim manufactured in japan. I want to say for the record that I agree with a lot of the points made. I am under the impression that they have brought the manufacturing back to LA. I agree however it's not what it once was.

  3. I am curious what authenticity means to you when buying denim. Specifically I am curious about everyones thoughts on Levi's vs. a lot of the brands we are wearing coming from japan. Obviously Levi's has history on its side, but why is it many of you do not feel for the brand the way you used to. Is it the way they are manufactured or the quality that you do not like? I am an old school denim guy and I will always have a special place in my heart for levi's, yet I feel like they have let me down to a certain extent. Why do a lot of the younger brands seem to have a more loyal following now without the long history? I know this topic has been touched upon in other threads, but its something I think about all the time. Please share your thoughts. Thanks, blake

To celebrate this momentous feat he's issuing a coupon for 17% off everything in the Self Edge online store for the next six hours. Why 17%? We're not sure, Diesel can't talk yet.

And anyway, he's too busy working on the SEXTW07, his signature jean with Triple Works (Iron Heart)...

    The coupon code is: ChambrayDogCape

For 17% off everything in the online store, with free shipping worldwide still included.

    Ends at 4pm (PST) today.

I love french bulldogs. When are you going to make one for a 100lb black lab? Thats what I need. Nice pick up.

  5. We have been asked by kicking mule to do a special project. Basically they are asking for one of my customers to trade in a really good worn pair of Kicking Mules. They would replace the pair you have and name the wash after whoever supplies them. This would be for fall 09. Maybe we could call it the "Portland" Let me know if anyone is interested. You do not have to be living in portland, but it has to be a pair purchased from me. let me know. thanks, blake

  6. I would buy your size in the rinse. It is a little smaller than the raw. It also does not stretch that much. Most people have purchased their size and I have not had any complaints. Of course this is all personal preference. I do not know how tight you want them. It is the best fitting jean ever......

  7. Absolutely!

For anyone who doesn't know (like the people who put together that f***in Wikipedia page) Jacob Davis was the man who designed Levi's jeans. He made the first ones by hand, perhaps 20 or 30, in white cotton duck and denim, then when they seemed to be popular he wrote to his denim supplier, Levi Strauss, to ask if he wanted to team up and buy a patent. Once Levi funded the patent, Jacob continued to oversee production, probably by homeworkers around SF.

(Lord knows where the wikipedia ino came from, for Levi certainly never claimed to have made the original jeans, nor did he buy any fabric from Nimes, he distributed American-made denim, which by then was extremely popular, made in Amoskeag, Manchester, New Hampshire.)

Jacob's grandson, Ben Davis, set up the US workwear company. I remember reading some of their recent shirts were based on Boss Of The Road designs. Which were probably based on Levi's design. What goes around comes around.

BTW, I'm glad so maby people have given props to Adriano Goldschmied. If you talk to anyone who's into purist denim, he's the name that comes up most often. Not only did he set up the Replay group, he was an early backer, and adviser, I believe, to Evis, too...

Adriano was one of the original founders of Diesel.

  8. also do not forget about the earlier group of people who made the product available to all of us. I am talking about the retailers. Fred Segal has to be up there. He was selling denim forty years ago when the concept of "fashion" denim did not really exist. He is one of the people responsible for the stores that you see today.

  9. PLease edit that post!

It's not deserved, I'm just a passenger - it's the people who spoke to me who made the book happen. Hence, in addition to Adriano G and Yamane, I should also cite Stefano Aldighieri, a total expert on fabric, Marly Nijssen (sorry, haven't had chance to check spelling) from Diesel/Lee, Rikke Korff, who came up with the Engineered and Type ONe concepts, Neal Cassady, who pioneered the beat denim look, plus Lynn Downey, who keeps the Levi's legends alive, and Joe Vega, who did the same at Lee.

well played. This includes most of mine. I have to also give props to a jean and not a person. A viewing of the actual Nevada Jean led me to open my shop. It was beautiful. That jean was the biggest influence on my life.

  10. Raw would be darker because they have never been rinsed or washed hence no indigo has seeped out. They will lighten slightly with every wash as the indigo fades and rinses out.

I actually think the rinse is darker and I prefer it anyway (the color). I have had both and sold both in the store and the rinse always does better and people prefer the color. Go with the rinse.

  11. That's interesting because from everything else I've seen and read, it seems like the opposite should be true.

From the Context site: "Warp and weft dyed denim will develop a subtle and unique fade over time-- a brilliant sheen"

Pictures I've found. Sorry if these are yours because I can't give credit, they were found amongst boards. They're both in various stages of wear and while they don't look like leather, have a very obvious sheen.

I think those have never been washed. That is what I was saying. they start off with a sheen and once you soak them, it goes away.

  12. Just got sz 35 NS - i know im big, but im kinda wondering if maybe i should've gotten the 34s after all. man i love that raw denim feel though

have you worn them? TIme is going to be the key. They are going stretch.

  13. I've got a few pairs of embarassing jeans, too... I've got some true religions, diesel, and... gulp... the american eagle jeans I was wearing when I bought those A.P.C.'s from you yesterday.

let me know how those come along. I am always interested in seeing people's worked over jeans.

  14. Some day I'd like to see Blake's 100+ collection of jeans

There is some amazing stuff (a nevada jean in the box with a letter from the president of levi's), and some super lame stuff (like my first pair of Mavi's). None of it is getting thrown out though. I do not know what I would do if I did not have a basement.......
