Re the early query on fit, the 501 was redesigned around 2003 - more of a 1947 shape and a straighter leg. The reply about the blank red tag with just the 'R' is correct, it's a copyright device to protect the use of the red tag, regardles of what's written on it.

I believe the 501 has used Ring/OE from 1983 - I'm sure it's not OE/OE, although there might have been changes recently, and there are so many different options now it's impossible to know for sure.

Not sure if its mexican denim, but i think they are made in philippines, with the factory code 359.

But quality wise, the crotch is blown in 2 or 3 months, so its not very durable.

I first hand-washed them at 3 months, then machine washed at the 6th. Subsequently washed them monthly.

The colour is closer to the photo taken with flash. Really want to wear them more, but I also try to keep to resting them for a day in between days of wearing them.

Have been lurking in this thread for ages and have learned a lot from all the amazing people in here. Caught the addiction and bought a pair of Redwings 8160 last December and I find them really comfortable.

They have not changed much though over the 6 months as I have not been wearing them enough, got to change to indoor shoes at work. But I am already looking forward to getting a pair of 8166 also.

Maybe I am lucky. I just machine wash them, still ok after a year, although I don't wear them very often.

airfrog, do you have any first hand experience of mink oil damaging leather or thread? Asked because I have never heard from someone with first hand experience of it. In fact there are people who used mink oil and find them harmless So I always wondered if this comment is a marketing ploy of the companies producing leather conditioners.

I think they state on SDA website that SDA-203 is a lighter denim to SDA-103. If I remember correctly, its 14oz to 15oz.
