  1. From Context

Genuine Shell Cordovan is the art of tanning at its finest. More than just a color, it is a very specific leather, from a particular part of a horsehide. The irregular oval shaped shells are tanned, stuffed, shaved, and then polished-- a process taking six months. Each shell is slowly steeped in gentle vegetable liquors. The shells are genuine hot stuffed then slicked onto glass frames to dry. Each shell is hand curried and shaved by highly skilled artisans to expose the shell. Dyes are hand rubbed on for a deep aniline finish. Finally, the shells are hand glazed to achieve the rich, glossy look and feel prized by fine craftsmen.

Unfortunately, I think the future buyer is going to get burned in this case. In most of the vintage advertising I've seen, it's the Wolverine soles that are made of shell cordovan and NOT the uppers. The soles have already been replaced on that eBay pair and the uppers look like standard calfskin leather. I've been in search of actual pictures of the shell soles, but am disappointed once again.

Here's a couple of advertisements for the Wolverine shell soles.

The other possibility is that these are the "inner-shell horsehide" (whatever that is) advertised by Wolverine here. A quick bit of research shows that Wolverine shifted its own tannery operations entirely to the production of "shell horsehide" in 1914, but it looks like they had their own "recipe", which might have resulted in their shells not having the typical Horween smoothness and shine: http://books.google.com/books?id=iSE...sehide&f=false

    Another Post:

I think Cardinal must be correct here. If you look closely at the old ads, they clearly show a hand bending what is a sole of a shoe, indicating, I suppose, that the sole is made from shell. The uppers just don't look it. At any rate, it's insane that these boots are at $127 after only two bids.

  5. Hey no worries. u don't need permission to like or don;t like anything.

just wondering wat people thought about this.

why i ask is because people tell me not to buy Montblanc or LV watch. Should buy from watchmaker type of brand cos theirs is in-house movement blah blah blah...

Just wondering if uniqlo's ability to get a price point and quality balance so right will spell the end of small high end (i.e high price) denim makers cos the product differentiation will be very little.

    just thinking aloud

FYI i have many many uniqlo stuff. even used to sell them.

  6. Just a note. Since we are supposedly denim heads... buying denim, especially selvedge, from 'non' denim based companies as opposed to getting denim from specialty brands like nudies, levis, pureblue, etc

How do you feel about that?

Can compare with luxury watch industry? eg. IWC Vs Louis Vuitton timepieces?

  7. not better... just pricing wise. if i had 100SGD ish to spend, i would have another option. thats all.

Levis 501 still has some appeal (at least to me)... at that price. Branding and all

  8. use something called a suede cleaning block.

    its works like an eraser.

about 10 bucks from Shukey or any department store's shoe section.

I'm trying to clean some suede helmut lang/margiela that I just bought.

Calfskin/smooth leather can be cleaned using that oily conditioning creme thing, but not sure bout suede, mang.

  9. The bottom line is...the bottom line! Profit making is the engine that drives all businesses. If not they will go out of business simple as that. Costs are going up all round. workers are demanding more as their cost of living goes up. If you were faced with a situation where material costs are going up, how are you going to maintain profits? you got to cut somewhere. you can't just pass off 'savings' to end comsumers. Thats where chain stores come in.

ALD is a small outfit. how can they afford to pass so- called savings?

  10. Hi People!

  11. Hiya Guys!

There is a 15% discount on apparel til end of the month!

WRT Good Society jeans, we are retailing at 158SGD for the Raw Slim Cut. Revolve is selling them for 94 USD.

Erm... last i checked, not the 35 to 45 dollars more as stated.

btw, I buy from online shops all the time. especially if they are way way cheaper or if i can't find it in Singapore.

hmmm. I should start an online store soon. cos the overheads are neglible... thats why there are online stores mushrooming all over the place.

Then i don't need to spend time for proposals to building management, money on reno, rent, hangers, POS system, more staff, window cleaning fluid (got lotsa mirrors at the new store), vacuum cleaner (got a nice plush carpeted area for comfortable fitting/changing for my customers and friends), etc.

Look out for an online store from The Lawn soon!

    cheers
