  1. Need help:

Some friends are visiting town and this is what they said,

I mostly would like to eat good food (you know, foodie food) bc so far the trip has been lacking in really good food. I also would love to find some indie-like boutiques with cute things for gifts and such. I know Japan has a large DIY community but I haven't seen it yet...so if you have any suggestions that would be cool.

I could take them to the ginormous MUJI / LOFT combo in GInza. I guess DIY really refers to etsy-like stuff.

    Any suggestions?

As far as food goes, I was thinking about taking them to some place for a baller status lunch. I'm thinking Cicada in Omotesando but it's pretty damn expensive.

We are willing to spend 2000 but not like 5000 yen. What do you all think?

Lots of big name starred places have express/biz lunches that go anywhere from 2000-3000Y a head. That doesnt include VAT and no wine, but you can get in at La Table Robuchon in the chateau in Ebisu for that much starting price, and others as well. I go to Fureika in Higashiazabu for Chinese food at lunch, they have sets for 2000-3000Y a head (2000Y buys you a couple starter pieces of Chinese BBQ, a couple amazing dumplings, and then soup noodles... so about twice as much as a greasy spoon but two Michelin stars, dude. Probably worth it) and sometimes 800y/glass Laurent Perrier champagne. It's really well made food.

  2. I was in a hurry the other day to buy luggage and got a Porter helmet bag in a wider version, classic orange lining. I would buy more Porter since they're not far in price from the Muji in Japan, for a basic black bag, but they just don't make anything truly travel size that is great looking or classic. The ones that are suitcase sized that i've seen are rather unaesthetic and just functional rolling softcases like many makers make.

  3. I still use a Muji rolling ballistic nylon plastic hard case, I now have 3, all black and matching, and might get one or two more since I'm moving again. I've had one since summer last year and put like 50,000 miles on it in a year, still rolls perfectly and has rolled across miles of uneven pavement in Seoul, HK, NYC, LA, Tokyo, and other places. Costs a quarter of the Rimowas, recommended if you can get one.

  4. yeah I used to just rent pocket wifis from softbank at the airport when I arrived. Got the same stores at haneda and Narita, Haneda on departures floor by the smoking room and Narita on the arrivals level I think. The pocket wifis work pretty well except they only run a few hours on a charge since they get abused and rented all the time. The company renting them is not actually affiliated with Softbank and they're kinda shady, it's a hassle to return the equipment in the city like they offer as an option, so just rent it at the airport and return as you leave. I went once and it was a shitty building in Roppongi and they kept making me wait and weren't sure if they'd leet me into the office. It was extremely weird. Anyway, doesn't really matter as what they offer works and it's cheap enough, 1500Y a day for wifi beats paying for it at a hotel plus while you're out and you can run all your devices. They do iPhone SIMs too now but really, I'd just get a pocket wifi - most people aren't really making phone calls in Japan and if you do, can just use the hotel phone.

  5. Since this thread got bumped I guess I'll post some pictures I took of my roommates room. I feel like this is more of a you need to see it kind of thing anyway. You can take a guess what the pills are for.

Also eagerly anticipating Drew's post but I think he forgot about it.

That's pretty damn good. I didn't forget to post, it's just going to take a ton of time to write this epic. It concludes in a pic that is full-frontal nudity and NSFW, yet mysteriously contains no genitals.

  6. i'm flying out on the 1st. back on the 2nd. i hope this hurricane won't fuck shit up.

hit me up on Friday or Saturday if you are going to Muse or something. LALZ.

what time do you fly in? I arrive at Narita around 8 or something I think

  7. There are more vegan restaurants out there than people think, macrobiotic or veggie, there's also enough falafels and stuff out there, you can get by as a vegan in Japan but you'll never eat any of the good stuff that way. You can eat soba with some soy sauce I guess, and vegetable tempura. There's also a vegetable sushi place in Roppongi Hills.

  8. I drove from Minato down to Shichirigahama/Enoshima a couple weeks ago and it took like an hr, maybe an hr and a half on the way back as I hit light evening traffic. Shizuoka is like a two hr+ drive, pretty sure it'd be that or even 3 hrs by train unless you paid for an express thing. You can get rental cars for like 4500Y a day with insurance included, that's the best way to get down past Yokohama. Karuizawa is a good daytrip but like 2-3 hrs by car each way.

  9. i read that making ice out of tonic water would lead to slow melting, is that false too?

in fairness, I read that on the back of a bottle of schnapps, sooooo

Tonic ice cubes would be gross unless you were drinking a tonic-based drink like a G+T - and even then, that's a lot of f'ing tonic... commercial tonic has a bunch of sugar in it too.

there's a ton of shit surrounding the round ice idea but american_hearts is right - pebbled ice has more surface area, more cooling, more dilution. The big ice balls are intended for whisky only really. In Japan (where the big round ice thing started) they use a one or a few large cubes in highballs and other mixed drinks. That's also because the large round ice is too big to fit into a highball glass, it's supposed to be the right size for an old-fashioned glass or a whisky tumbler.

I'm stealing this video from Charly, but watch our bartender friend carve an ice ball by hand:

Also, a true pro tip surrounding ice and cooling - cool the glass before you make a drink; that in itself will slow the melting of the ice far more. You should fill a clean empty glass to the top with medium sized rock ice and use a long cocktail spoon to spin the ice around the glass until the outside of the of the glass dews up with condensation and the glass gets very cold. You dump all that ice and the water that's come from the melted ice and then replenish the dry, cold glass with fresh ice, and build the drink as quickly as possible.

  10. I have pretty weird dreams, pretty much all the time. Took a nap this afternoon when I got home from my meetings and when I hit dream mode I dreamt that I was in a green Ford Contour being driven by jeepster on this massively elevated expressway (like almost out of the atmosphere elevated, and was riding with a ton of NYC sufuers in this car - Jason Bourne and willy cheesesteak, Spaghetti, and merry burger were all inside this car with me in the backseat, didn't see who was in the front seat. I admitted to them that I had never been to Brooklyn before but somehow we were in Brooklyn.

We pulled up to this place that was kinda American institutional and mid-century looking, and once inside there was another huge revolving door made of plexiglass and about 20 foot deep, but it was shaped like this: )( and the edges sealed against the walls as it revolved. I was alone for some reason and then started walking through this revolving door, and a crazy dude jumped out at me. He had a big loop on his head that resembled a a long strip of paper taped to itself, or kinda like that Dyson fan. I was in another cell of the revolving door and we were separated and I kept walking, I think he got picked out by security or something. Once I had done about 320 degrees in the revolving door I got to another room and a black woman said to me 'we never let people in here, but because of the crazy dude, I will let you in' and then I went to a room that had a ping pong table and looked like a suburban house, and met up with everyone again.

merry burger kept wanting to get a huge bucket of chicken wings delivered for our impromptu party and I was complicit with this idea. All of us went out to a CVS or something to buy generic brand soda, might've been Shasta or something. I think they were like, 3L bottles.

Later I'm in an opera theater and I see the crazy guy with the big loop on his head sitting a few rows in front of me, and about 5 ft away there is an evil looking guy with a couple women near him, though I detect he is a big elderly gay guy. I watch the two bad guys interact and realize they are huge enemies, and the big guy goes over and smashes the loop-headed guy in the head with two fists, but he realizes the loop-headed guy disappeared and left a box with a 2D print of himself. In the end the big guy just smashes this cardboard box and somehow when his hands come up he has a hold of the loop-headed guy's battered iPhone 3GS.

then I woke up. I think the CVS trip was a recurring location I normally go to in my dreams, there is a drivethrough ATM in that same location too. I usually have nightmares about flying, either planes crashing, or being trapped in an empty airport, since I fly a lot. Might've had a brief airplane sketch in my dream today but I can't remember. The NY thing was probably because I have been watching the Batman trilogy too much lately, in my dream Long Island was just a middle island and we were actually driving to another island over on the other side further away from Manhattan.
