  2. Don't get me wrong...I wasn't shittin on NYHC at all...there's some fantastic shit from the politically-focused side (Reagan's Youth, Born AGainst, the two bands that have been mentioned in my previous posts) and the toughguy side (old Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, Youth of Today, some other shit I can't recall right now)...and some good shit inbetween (...I like the Beasties).

I don't know too too much about the later Boston scene...just most of the classics.

oh no doubt yo. i'm just saying the most exceedingly tough guy and unnecessarily violent scene wasn't in new york.

by the way, where in the city do you stay?

  3. What bands do you consider "NYHC Toughguy?" I'm curious like Suzie is to the question of "girly hc."

Not ALL NYHC was on some toughguy shit...but I do think we had more than enough of that going on.

more than boston? i think not. straight edge became pathology when it took root in massachusetts.

  4. i'm not vegan, but these are places i seem to end up when i'm with people who are. if you were here prekatrina your options are pretty much the same.

    bennechin on royal is good.

angeli on decatur is open late.

lola's on esplanade near city park / bayou st. john is a spanish place with a few offerings. and the cracked out garlic stuff that looks like some sort of butter that comes with the bread is vegan.

13 on frenchman - people will tell you to go here. i won't.

    mona's on frenchman

but in general, you're pretty much fucked. i'm not promising that anything that seems like it should be vegan anywhere in town will actually be vegan. so if you are one of those people who cry over whey or lard, you may want to not eat while you're here.

if you eat out, you aren't vegan. anyone who thinks food at a 'vegan' restaurant (or at least a resto with vegan options) made by your local dredlock-sporting veganista makes all the more legit is naive. the risk of what is called contamination is much higher when you eat out for obvious reasons. if one wants to be a strict vegan, one must eat at home, or in kitchens whose adherence of veganism is hardline (down to the dyes in kitchenware).

thanks for the info. i'll be sure the check out some of these joints.

  5. Not exactly, but with any traditional skinhead group (gangs) that I have come into contact with in LA area/california as a whole, they seem to all have an undercurrent of racism running through them. The sharps are excepted. They obviously go out of their way, but that seems to be a reactionary movement to the many racist/traditional skinheads that give skinheads in the US a bad image.

On another note I do see many hispanic skinheads who are racist... The prison/car gang Nazi Lowriders has many white and hispanic members who are very racist. I don't quite get it, but I have given up trying to understand the nazi skinheads.

california skins are the worst man. that racist undercurrent is so prevalent in the "skin" punks out there, and in the hardcore scene in general. as you said, this isn't only about white kids who shave their head; several latino gangs (mexicans in particular) collaborate with neo-nazis for drug deals and such.

I suppose growing up in new york city skewed my conception of those who subscribe to the subculture greatly.
