  1. white person ponytail (i can topknot it too but this is what i did with it today)

i dont know what to think about it i think it's kind of weird looking and maybe stupid but i think i like it

    Looks excellent!

I find those hurt very badly after awhile. Is there a trick to putting them in? I usually wear the thin elastic soccer-playing girl type headbands, which are comfortable all day.

  3. My hair is long, but not long enough to get into a ponytail. I frequently wear headbands to keep the hair out of my face and get a lot of stares and strange looks as a result. Any of you longhairs wear any kind of hair accessories (other than ponytail holders)?

  4. An informal study came out last year I think that found that like 60-70% of professional academics abuse stimulants like Adderall to enhance productivity. Academia is becoming like pro sports: gotta cheat to compete :(

  5. Question: who's going to compete in the 100m Freestyle for the US? I thought it would be Phelps, but I wonder if Lezac will be a better bet considering his performance in the relay. His split was quicker than that of Phelps, right?

The 100 free places are selected at Olympic Trials, where the top two finishers get to swim the individual race. Garrett Weber-Gale won at Trials and Lezak was second, so they'll be the two.

Eamon Sullivan of AUS has the WR, because only the first leg of the relay can be counted as a record.

  6. got an article or video or anything on this?

That won't make much sense if you're not a swimmer, but right before the pulldown, he does a HUGE downward dolphin kick. It was illegal at the time, but legalized a few months later. His screams when he wins make me so mad.

  7. that was a sickkkkkk race.

thought phelps had a pretty weak start, but lezak destroyed it.

Phelps split 47.51... American record and only .01 behind the WR before Sullivan smashed it. He went pretty well.

This makes up for fucking Kitajima's victory. Fucking cheater fuck.

  8. Trying to decide between PhD in clinical psych studying happiness and positive psych or med school with ultimate goal of surgeon. One provides what is probably more interesting work with a chance to be a luminary in the field. The other provides exponentially more money, status, respect, and probably more fun work, but takes a looooong time and a lot of money. What to do :(

  9. In other news, the Mariners are giving 4/$48mil (reportedly) to a guy who gave up more runs per nine than strikeouts last season. They're so so so bad at evaluating talent.

Josh Towers would've pitched better for us for a book of postage stamps.

  10. I think what gets Bonds the shit treatment more than anybody is that he wasn't well-liked to begin with, so nobody's upset when hypocritical journalists (Gene Woj from ESPN.com is who I think of when I think of that.. what a dick) start slamming him, like they can get revenge on him for being a world-class asshole. If, say, Jeff Bagwell had done the same thing, there would be a much more sympathetic angle played here.

I would love to have him DH for the Mariners, for the record. A 1.000+ OPS and he doesn't have to play defense? Yes PLEASE.

  11. Tigers are going to kill next year, and the Marlins look like dookie at this point.

I feel bad for their roster, it's not a pretty sight right now.

The Marlins are better than you think, and in 1-2 years, they're going to be very, very good. Anyone they put at 3B is not going to be as big of a downgrade as one might expect, because almost anyone is better with the glove than Miguel Cabrera.

  12. I find this a little hard to believe. Everything I've read points to the Rays having a weak farm, especially when it comes to major league-ready pitching. They wouldn't have traded Delmon Young if they didn't have a great need for a young pitcher behind Kazmir and Shields.

I'm not sure where you heard that. Kazmir, Shields, Sonnanstine, Garza, Hammel, Howell, and Jackson is one hell of a major league staff. Add to that Jeff Niemann, Jake McGee, Wade Davis, Chris Mason, and last year's number one overall pick David Price, and the Rays have more pitching than anyone in the league. Last season they struck out more per nine than any other staff (not including bullpen), and that was with Fossum and Seo each pitching a few. Their pitching looked bad last year because of their defense, one of the all-time worst at the major league level.

In another unpopular opinion, I feel the Marlins came out ahead today. Andrew Miller is going to absolutely KILL in the NL, and Maybin is going to be excellent as well. No doubt Miggy Cabrera will continue to rake for Detroit, but his defense is atrocious, so depending on where they play him, they'll be giving some or plenty back. Willis is pretty much done as a top quality major league pitcher and has been operating on hype for a few seasons, but he'll be decent in the back end of a rotation. He's a definite downgrade from Miller, though. Granted, Detroit didn't need more cheap young pitching, so it's not like they get shafted there. Some very cool trades in the last week.
