  1. what is the best way to condition/moisturize oil-tanned leather (Red Wing 875). They don't need any shoe polish or anything, I'm just looking to keep them in good condition so they won't crack. I also have a pair of Semi Dress on the way that are made with oil-tanned leather as opposed to the dry-tanned regular semi-dress leather that people polish.

I've heard that mink oil is bad and can deteriorate leather over a long time. I've also heard that wax dries out leather but I don't think I have anything with wax. I've heard silicone isn't good for leather but I'm not sure if that is the dry-tanned as opposed to oil-tanned.

I have some Kiwi Mink Oil that has mink oil, lanolin and silicone in it. Says it conditions and waterproofs smooth leather.

I have some Sof Sole leather lube, it comes in a jar with a sponge applicator. It says it is a blend of waxes and oils to protect against water and other liquids, restore original feel and color while providing long lasting protection. You buy this stuff at Famous Footwear.

I have some Kiwi Leather Lotion, cleans, conditions and nourishes smooth leather prevents drying and cracking and leaves a soft lustre. there are business shoes on the bottle that it comes in, like shampoo, so i'm thinking it might not be for oil-tanned leather. Formulated to gently clean as it replenishes the oils for all leathers. after use it leaves a soft lustre, keeps them looking new longer and helps prevent drying and cracking.

I have a similar bottle of leather lotion from Wilson's Leather. moisturizes leather to prevent drying and cracking, mantains natural luster and replenishes natural oils.

I'm kind of confused as to what the differences are between them....what their intended uses are and which would be best for oil-tanned leather.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. I've spent a couple hours on google and everyone gives conflicting advice as to what the best way to care for leather is and I assume they are talking about dry-tanned leather and not oil-tanned.

  2. I think the Evisu are sanforized and the Levi's unsanforized. I'd soak the Levi's in warm water, no agitation, to reduce the amount of bleeding. These will shrink them up a bit to get the legs slightly twisted. I bet the Evisu are sanforized, I would't soak them but it's up to you. I wouldn't worry about staining anything unless you are sitting on a very light colored couch. The jeans probably aren't totally soaked in indigo and won't smudge super easy. Some brands bleed more than others. A quick soak and hang dry would probably get rid of that problem.

  3. What brand/style of jeans are they? How do they fit now? Are they sanforized or unsanforized? If sanforized I wouldn't do it. If unsanvorized they will shrink after the first wash/soak so it would be a good idea as long as they are a quality denim. MOre info needed.

How do you want the jeans to fit you? How do they fit now?

edit: Also, I wouldn't shower in them. I think hot water makes the jeans bleed more as well as shrink more. Whenever I've soaked unsanforized denim like Sugarcane, 19 and 21 oz samurai and sda jeans I soaked them, inside out, in my bathtub with cold water. I just wanted them to shrink a little bit before I wore them so my fading wouldn't move after the first wash/soak. If they are unsanforized the legs will twist and shrink a bit so you want to get the initial shrinkage out of the way.

  4. i tried on some red wings 875. they felt so comfortable. i already got alden indys, but i feel like pickin those up. just two totally different worlds.

i love my 875 and 877's, got them super cheap new on ebay, $70 a pair BIN shipped! you can get them for like $120 now, still about 1/2 retail.

my samurai's are bleeding onto the leather and it is giving it a super cool darkened color in the areas where my jeans stack up against the boot.

i highly recommend coping a pair. go to the store, get your size and then hit ebay. make sure to check to see if it is a 'second quality' or whatever pair, mine were first quality. for the price difference might be worth picking up factory seconds, sometimes they just have minor flaws.

  5. So I've been lurking in the shadows for a while, but I've been looking to get into denim. So I am a bigger guy (say 36 or 38 waist) and I was looking at getting a pair of 1966 sugar canes or 3005 flatheads. I'm looking for something that will fit a bit more relaxed than skinny. Thoughts?

I'd look at the 1947 sugarcanes, they are roomy. Also, Ironheart has bigger sizes, 36 and 38. my sc 47's are a 36 one wash and measure 36" in the waist.

  6. i have bought three belts from this guy, they are super thick, sturdy, replaceable buckles, a single piece of leather. you won't outlive this belt I"m sure.

the sizing is kinda funny, i like my belts extra long so i had to return a belt for sizing but if you size normal you might want to think about going a size extra, not a lot of length after the middle hole.

  7. Spaceman - I really would'nt think that the Slip on's stretch alot...after all , it's a rubber sole..

I would say that the Vans are the real deal , and the Converse are more of a fashion follow up...

yeah i'd say for slip-ons get the Vans. get yourself a pair of All-stars or one-stars, though, as they are sweet shoes. everyone should own a pair of chucks.... a classic sneaker to wear with jeans.

  8. cold soak - will shrink the jeans some, no indigo loss without agitation

hot soak - will shrink the jeans a lot, no indigo loss without agitation. i imagine the hot water is better at removing dirt/grime/oils than cold water if you aren't using soap.

whatever soak you do, if you move the jeans around it will result in the normal loss of indigo. people usually agitate when they are using soap when soaking their jeans....to help get some of the dirt loose. i only agitate if i'm going to use a gentle soap, like dr. bronners.

if you are looking to get contrasting fades hold off on agitating it until you have worn them in a lot. i wouldn't soak right away since they are sanforized. maybe do a soak after 6 months or when you have some defined creases and some white spots from wear....a warm soak. soap if they are super dirty. i prefer to keep mine dirty because i like the weft to become dirty-colored and show through brownish.
