  1. Thanks for the reply... We're into interesting places to eat/drink, art, architecture, cool shops (not clothing, more stuff uniquely Russian) - I know this is very broad - we're down with pretty much anything. I guess I'm looking to hear about things you can't get from a tour guide, you know? Stuff that you were blown away by, that you think is not to be missed...

  2. I'm not sure about Undercover, but Colette is dope - well worth the visit just to look around, great selection of design books upstairs if I recall correctly, cool staff too.

  3. I agreee, TO has the edge on shopping. I think food wise, they're tied overall, depends what you like I guess. TO has some great Italian spots...

The strip bars in Montreal are the truth! Hit Rue St. Catherine... You might consider MTL during the F1 race weekend, late June I think. Hotels jack the prices, but the whole city parties for 3-4 days - great atmosphere - oh ya, you have to try some poutine.

    Have fun!

  4. Great, thanks for the info, and for writing it twice englandmj7 icon_smile_wink.gif . . .

I'm well prepared to get some drinks on. I've done some Googling on the Cliffs of Moher, I'll be there. I'm thinking the car rental is the way to go, always find that's a great way to see a new place...

  5. Does anybody have tips on Ireland? I'll be there in late June, staying in Dublin. I've got a couple travel books that list the various things to check, but does anyone have any recomendations for things not to be missed? I'm interested in getting off the beaten track a bit, seeing some country, architecture, bars - up for anything not crazy touristy...

btw I'm taking the train/ferry from Heathrow as opposed to flying, thought it might be a cool scenic trip - has anyone done this? Is it pretty straight forward?

    Thanks...

  6. Just wondering if anyone knows if something is up at Lodown Magazine, I signed up for a subscription in January and I haven't received an issue yet. I sent a few emails, but haven't heard anything...

  7. Yeah Burnaby has some good spots that are reasonably priced, another option is to check out renting part of a house, i.e. basement suite, top floor etc. You could check the Kitsilano (Kits) neighbourhood, Point Grey, as well as North and West Vancouver... All are out of Van, but within 20 min by transit.

  8. Based on the SuperFuture review, I checked the Paul Smith sale shop http://superfuture.com/city/reviews/review.cfm?id=1119〈=EN last summer and it was well worth it. The guy working there was super helpful, good selection, good prices (even though the Brit pound doesn't show a lot of love to the CDN $ - don't forget that VAT exemption when you leave)

It's down a little side alley, open to foot traffic only, I got in the general vicinity and then asked another store for directions. Anyway, worth a look if you like Paul Smith...

  9. lol, check New Amsterdam Cafe, 300 block of Hastings I think. 20 min walk from where you're staying... I'm not really up on that, and I doubt its exactly Amsterdam steez, but I'm sure someone there could point in you in the right direction.

Have a great trip, hope the snow at Whistler works out for you, you should try to hit Teppan Village while you're in Whistler... ill Japanese steakhouse etc. http://www.teppanvillage.ca

  10. Definitely hit Kobe Japanese Steakhouse as well as the rest of KALee's suggestions. Not sure when you're coming, while Gastown has good shops, Richard Kidd, Alife, etc. and is cool for the cobblestone /steam clock feel, this time of year it feels kinda dark and damp. You might check http://www.granvilleislandhotel.com or http://www.sylviahotel.com/ both are in nice/interesting locations to stay, the thing with Vancouver is its small enough that you can get anywhere you need to be within an hour on foot, or 15 min on bus.

For food, check Denman street, lots of inexpensive spots within 4-5 blocks. If you're up for the large dinner out, check Il Giardino (Italian), I'd also recommend La Regalade in West Vancouver, its a French bistro, not cheap, but the food is excellent (get the gnocchi). Its a 15 min bus or cab ride out of Vancouver.

Commercial Drive is another area that’s cool to check, good small restaurants, little markets, cafés, bakeries, interesting shops etc. You could also hit Main street, spots like Front and Co. are well known for vintage, not my thing, but the neighbourhood is cool to check - there is a good spot for dim sum around there. Headquarters on Burrard had some nice kicks and a few Maharishi pieces last time I was in, might check that too.

Anyway, just some thoughts, there are lots of cool spots in Van, but there is also a lot of mediocrity, so the more research the better... if you have any specifc interests holler.

oh yeah... try to hit the Mongolie Grill on Davie, cheap and good food (noodles, veg, meat cooked while you wait on a huge hot block), although not exactly heavy on atmosphere....

    Hope that helps...

  11. Yup among other things, digital slr cameras let you make manual adjustments, let you use different lenses, most will take a picture faster than a point and click digi. Check the Nikon D-50 or D-70, good intro level digital slr...

Somebody with more photo knowledge could probably expand on the other things a digi slr will do...
