  1. Check first whether you can actually sit in a rocker or not. I bought one (early 70s, fibreglass, blue leathered...BEAUTIFUL) and realized after it arrived that the thing is breaking my back. I have another two chairs with exactly the same shell, but a normal base and I can hang around all evening in them...

Really all you need to do is toss a small cushion in there to fit into the small of your back and it's usable again.

  2. If anyone's interested, I can finish leather-soled Daytons (or similarly well-constructed boots) so that they have the same finish as W&H.

Does it really matter? Those w&h boots are a year and a half old. My guess is your odds of finding them in your size is super super slim since you pretty much have to rely on 2nd hand
  3. A picture ledge

    IKEA: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30131410

is a nice alternative. Good horizontal lines that you can put stuff on. You'll have to put holes in the walls, but you can always patch it up later. And the nice thing is you can add or remove art on the ledge whenever.

That said, you can always just use a monkey hook for easy installation (no tools necessary) of traditional pictures-on-a-frame.

  4. As far as the flooring, this was one thing I wavered on a bit. Quotes were coming back over $2k to polish and seal it. I sourced stuff to do it myself, but it was going to be a two part application, including a 10-day curing period where I wouldn't be able to be in the space. So I left it open; it's def. quirky, but growing on me.

My loft came with bare concrete floors too. I ended up doing a black epoxy floor (also available in other colours). Came to about $2/sqft installed, taxes, etc. And this is in Vancouver, Canada, where Minimum wage is like what? $11/hr now? Anyhow, do a bit of research and look for something local with high solids and low/no gassing. It's out there.

Acid etching will take a few hours to apply, a day to blow out. Low VOC epoxy will take 24-48h to cure till you can walk on it (no heavy furniture though) and a couple more days for the heavy stuff.

    Super easy to maintain.

  7. Heh, I'm now paying for my extravagant renovations. Unfortunately, I didn't make the shower/toilet one single "wet" room, though in retrospect that would have been an excellent idea. Yeah, the first few months, I went through a bunch of renovator's remorse.

Glass for the shower will come in time, as will a little platform leading up to the shower. I plan to cover up the exposed pine at the bed platform with some really nice Brazilian Black Walnut I picked up ridiculously cheap, and do little touches like floorboards and painting the exposed pipes.

Got curtains and some nice hardware to hold them up just a week ago, and putting the rest of the stuff together. Baby steps.

Eventually, when I'm done, a 50" LCD could be had for cheap, then that goes on the wall.

And before that, I want a Hancock & Moore sofa :)

  8. I live in Gastown in Vancouver. The building I'm in is a warehouse conversion that's originally a hundred years old.

Gastown's an interesting place to live though. IE, Stussy and Goodfoot are all less than a block away from me, plus it's always entertaining to have the meth'd up crazies yelling as they drag their shopping carts down the street at 4 in the morning.
