Thanks guys. I'll check out those links.

Like the subject says. I just moved into my first apartment and don't know anything about furniture. I wan't quality stuff, not particle-board Ikea crap. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. Any good furniture places around here?
Thanks!

I called Levis about hemming a while ago. They said yes, but that they only hem Levis products. Maybe if you know somebody who works there....

I don't know how good these are, but I just saw some M-65 jackets (by Marc Jacobs) at the Loehmann's in Mountain View CA. Lined and 100% cotton. In a washed black or very dark grey. The price tag had "35F05" on it, which I guess means the jackets are from the Fall 2005 run.

Skinheads and mods often wear their pants like this. It looks good when they do it, but most other people just end up looking like nerds.

I'd really like to be able to pick up a piece of clothing and, irrespective of brand name, be able to tell if it's high quality and/or worth the money.
How does one go about learning this stuff. Are there good books in this regard?

Thought I would add: I noticed that the STFs they sell by my house are a size bigger in the waist than the tag says. So if you size up like the guide says you end up trying to shrink something that's way too big to begin with. Maybe that's the reason STFs "don't shrink."
I'm gonna get some too, but I'm bringing some measuring tape along!

Not sure, but I noticed that the 501s are no longer being described as "anti-fit" on the Levis site. Maybe they changed them again?

My Rescues are a little slimmer than the current cheap 501s of the same size. I guess you could call them "fitted" but they're definitely not tight.

Banana Republic's "Gavin" chino.
Flat front; straight, maybe slightly tapered leg; not long-rised. I think it's the slimmest pant they have. The quality's pretty good too, unless they've changed them recently. Mine lasted a long time before looking faded, and I treated them like crap. Boring colors and they never go on sale, but hey, they're only around $50.

I'm pretty sure you go down 2 sizes with the New Standards (or "Standard" as they now call it). I only figured this out myself from reading posts, but I once tried on a pair of 31 NS's (the store didn't have anything bigger) and they were exactly a size too small. I have a 34" waist.

Did you soak them first, or are you wearing them unshrunk?

I've had several, and will get another when I get my living situation in order.
A basic one is pretty easy--only if you read a bit about saltwater tanks first. This is another potential money pit (I'm assuming you're into more-expensive clothes too), and there can be costly mistakes if you don't use common sense.
Lurk places like reefcentral.com for a bit, decide what kind of tank you want, and just do a little research before buying stuff.

Yeah, I want to know too. Anybody?

Are Julien Reds true to size? Do you get a choice of inseam or do they just come in one length?

"Thier design and printing techniques are flawless, Andy Howell is behing this one....."
Is this Andy Howell the skater? The guy who used to ride for New Deal?

I remember reading somewhere that people with a rectangular/average body shape should get straight-leg jeans, whereas people with a "V" shape (big shoulders/chest and narrow hips) look best in tapered jeans.
Don't remember anything being said about bootcuts, but using the same line of reasoning, I'd imagine people with a bigger lower body would look best in those.

I don't really like the Rescue cut, so I'm selling mine.
They're about 1.5 months old. Soaked in cold water once in the beginning to shrink 'em but haven't been washed since.
How much do you think I should ask for them on ebay?

Yeah, don't do the dry-clean thing. I went to one and they fokked up my Rescues. It looked like my pants were hemmed by a five-year-old. I was so pissed off, you don't even know...At least the idiots left them about an inch longer than I asked, so I just chalked it up to experience and took the pants to an actual tailor.
When I showed the tailor my pants I could tell he was trying not to laugh at the previous work, but he did a good job and charged me $2 less than the dry cleaners did.
So anyway, I heard Cable Car Tailors in SF is good. Also, Azalea boutique hems their APC jeans for customers, and they told me they'll hem jeans that weren't purchased there.
PS: If you try the above places, please report back on how good a job they did.

I'm looking for a casual shoe that's dressier than trainers.
Something shaped like this: http://www.hanon-shop.com/images/products/small/OTFA5TN.jpg. Clarks "Desert Kahn" sort of fits this bill, but does anyone know of anything else similar I can find in the US?

I had those black soft rigids a year ago. There were good, but I wore them every day to work and ripped the crotch area. Do they still sell 'em?

Speaking of hemming. I already hemmed my Rescues (after washing once). Washing made them shrink about 1.5". Anybody know if they'll shrink a little more when/if I wash them again?
I hemmed them .5" longer just in case, but I sort of like the extra length now, so I want to keep it.
PS: My Rescues were like 37" (at least) long when I bought them. Yikes!

Wow, those are true to size, more or less.

Yeah, for better or for worse, I'd be a totally different person today if hadn't skated from 1986 to about five years ago. I got exposed to situations/things/people I would have never come into contact with.
It feels sad that I had to quit, especially since I never got around to learning some things I wanted to do (like ride tranny better). But it's hard on your body, and I had to "grow up" and do something with my life at some point, so I just quit cold-turkey while I was still ahead.
Still can't walk by a newstand w/o reading Thrasher/Transworld though, and I'm still looking for something similar that'll fill the same void in my life that that stupid, four-wheeled plank once did.
