    By the way although someone mentioned Abercrombie being wack and mall shit now (which is true) I gotta say that they used to be pretty dope too during this era we're discussin. There were only two in New York state, South street seaport and the Trump building (which later closed) but they had a verrrry different style. It was sorta like the educated thug shit, before rap had embraced and co-opted the loud sporty logos of Nautica, Tommy, etc....the Polo-boots wearing higher end prep style. Abercrombie used to be all safari, rugby and golf with some khakis and oxfords thrown in there. Smaller and more subtle logos. I worked at the Seaport one in 96 and that was the beginning of the college cocktease and closetfag persona of A&F. but even today, their craftsmanship is nearly second to none. aesthetitcally it's lacking much of anything but they make the best cargoes, jean jackets, sweaters, flannels, socks, boxers quality-wise in that price range. i always get shit and razor off the tag or name patch etc. it all lasts forever.

    27 West 28th street > where Wu bought their herb when in Gotham. camera'd entrance, freight elevator up to 3rd floor, into a giant loft with one tabletop counter, propritetor was a huge Mexican with 5 bags on the counter to pick from, and a machete.     careful on them fishing boats. My man Tonka did that for a couple seasons, caked up something fierce but broke 4 fingers and got 44 stitches in his side. It gets much worse than that, I'm sure you know. Homer is nice from what I hear, but I don't know about living in darkness that long. Could make for some good sessions though and choice latenight ebay snipings. But fuck man, I feel you. I spend time away, and it's that much doper when I come back to nyc, like hittin me from every angle when I come home to the love (and the hate). I guess moral of the story is we saw something at level X, now it seems like X minus 5, so just focus on the positivo and come with what we come with, creatively or whatever.   3. Born in the Bx, Raised in Queens. had to get up at 5:45am for 3 yrs to get up to Science. It was shit like those troo emcees on 89tec9 that kept me sane on the 4 train. and when we'd cut class, the streets were running deep with a hungry soulful vibe, it was the end of the eighties, and almost every scene musically and fahsion-wise was starved for dopeness, something of substance...all except skating, hiphop and graf (and grunge). we can't get those days back and fuck, i wouldn't want to.

    I mean look--- it would be a waste of time to try and point fingers, or try to pull indiv. cards like "YOU! You over there! in the flag hoodie, gun buckle belt and pink Supreme sneakers! You're FAKIN THE FUNK!!!" because the original point of me starting this post was to promote discussion, even provoke criticism on these issues, but also to ask, what or who is killing shit with the kunta fly shit right now? I mean i like stuff from BRKNHOME, Daggers Drawn, Stussy (still, they come widdit), Snafu, will always dap up SSUR (I had that Cape Fear tee, and the Reservoir Dogs follow up wah-aaay back), and overall yeah still def StapleDesign > and by the way, if Jeff Ng is charging 20K to work with him, then i say no fuckin doubt regal propers to you my brother! He is the hardest working man in this whole scene and his drive and vision continues to inspire me. Talk about growth. He has put more of his heart and soul into this than anyone in the last 10 years, far as I can tell. And no, he doesn't bomb, doesn't try to become a DJ or promoter, front like some god's gift to thread science on his blog...and for the Science cats who know, them Asians got the illy work ethic (oh shit, Flying Dragons what! 'You hang out? You got beeper?' heh heh) and Jeff rises above even that level. So to me, whether I nod to ALL of his ideas/executions or not, I know that he does this for the love, is a true head, and has, on about a 10 year continuum, contributed a whole lot to this scene in my eyes.

    Yeah, I used to throwup, with shoe polish too! (the old ghetto Krink), I've DJ'd, from FatBeats (the newer location) down to Greenpoint, DUMBO, Bushwick, I've put time into making clothing, skated bout 15 years ago (BONES! Peralta!), did my thing with the freestyle GT Performer with mags pegs AND forkstanders. even had the old nerdstyle POLO/TIMBO/EMS/TOMMY stage, the preppy unpredictable live shit...so yes, I agree that then it was more like I'm going to walk the walk (dress the part) but because I am confronted with these scenes every day, I best to make sure and immerse myself in the shit first hand, or for sure you'd get your card pulled on some I'm a purist, and you're a tourist...so head thattaway, back to the tour bus - kinda shit. Poser kids in the 5 boros just didn't make it. They got called out early and stayed humble. These days, it seems the harder you front (in your...blog?), the more you get away with it. There is no dues paying, no requisite to bring something to the table you can actually stand behind because you truly are part of it...now it's just...well, Dress the part, buy the art, Google the names, download the garbage tracks, and...>poof< you're in. You look and sound like everyone else, but that's okay...didn't anybody tell you? This culture is completely for sale!

    I'm totally feelin everyone's opinion, this roundtable has me totally opin. Everyone coming with posts of great substance, something I consider a rarity on SF (no offense denim doctors, have to proper all those denim cats, I ain't never seen people break down cotton so dramatically...that's how i am with my O.C., Keith Murray, Tribe, Stretch, Juggaknots etc. etc. shit so I feel you on being a nerdling).     I don't mean to overtly suggest that England & UK = wackwackwack, they do their thing. Obviously my views will be skewed, coming from where I am geographically, but I don't mean to say that England or whatever doesn't have its place in the scene we're discussing. But for me, honestly, and this is no doubt a direct result of that home-is-heart bias, but not much coming out of those places has really hit me in the...soul or seemed crazy groundbreaking i guess. I proper up some characters that I know of, (Duffer, One True Saxon etc.) for stamina and steady low-key dopeness, and no doubt if I stayed over there for a long time I would give more citywide daps. I simply felt that if the scope of this convo were limited to people who, if I knew them back in the day, would relate to me because of a very niche (even then) time and place connection, then I would be able to hear their take on things in a more...'credible' (to me at least) light.

    In sum, I was looking to exclude the kids on this site who can't relate...not because they're wack, or herby or whatver (though this is often the case) but because...well, because they just weren't there. It's like standing in a conversation watching two people discuss a movie you didn't see. Of if I were to listen to a young brit lad wax nostalgic about some old dope scene I was never a part of, and only got exposed to the creative fruits of. I wouldn't be able to step in that cipher, because although I may have something to say, it may not strike the original poster as relevant. If someone wanted to start this sort of thread it's their right, but it's also mine to want to limit the panel to heads I feel come to the table with a first-hand knowledge. That said however, I am certainly glad you posted. But while I would agree that virtually any city has their own street culture, I don't think anyone in this thread can deny that everything this scene sweats right now, be it rap or graf inspired design, DJing art collective elitist parties or whatever, old lyrics and beats still sweated today, current dominant "streetwear" fashion trends (in the 18-34 demographic), or other facets of grimy pace-setting culture...the ultimate roots of that shit were sown in the streets of nyc. It's your right to differ on that, but in the end the facts are with me.

    i hear you, i don't mean to come off like super extremist/elitist, but i see so many of these posts by dudes who are so far away from everything, dudes in Ireland or London wearing shirts they don't even catch the relevance of...talking like "Yo fuck that, there is no better emcee than Camron..." and "Who is this Harold Hunter fag?" shit like that, etc. i know i can't be mad at that, but was just trying to limit the responses to people who could actually relate to the time i came from, the landscape from then was -- and this is barely up for debate --- all straight out of new york. no need to wax elemental about DJing, MCing, Graf, Bboys blah blah blah, but seriously...every last t-shirt "line" or clothing company, be it out of California, the UK, whatever...seems rife with young rookies fronting so hard i feel embarrassed for them.     I'm talking about the heads I used to post (up) with last year. Before SF got overrun by children running off at the...keyboard (the new thug life).

    If you grew up where I did, five-boro-one-love stylie, and you're around my age (28) and you've seen the progression of a culture now so commercially embraced by the entire planet, and you watched it grow, almost from inception maybe, and saw it FIRST HAND (*not in books or on the shiny new shelves of some exploitive throwback boutique in the UK or San Fran) then please, please, help me rest easy.

    Sure, on some level I'm a bitter backpacker, nerd, blah blah, call it what you like. But I remember a time when originality and style determined one's lifeline in the streets, the stores, whatever. But today...something is lacking. I know that people always think THEIR era was the best, the golden age..."they don't make ____ like they used to" etc. etc. but i mean seriously.

    WHAT...HAPPENED? Music sucks. Fashion is a joke. There is a profound lack of creativity in the streets, the stores, the galleries. Sure, hiphop is itself a derivative culture (breakbeats, loops, whatever) and thereby any creative endeavor hoping to honor it, be it quoting emcees on tees, exploiting rap crews to sell clothing etc. will necessarily be another derivative of a derivative, and on and on etc. etc.

    But from jacking comic book art or corporate typography to overtly co-opting ideas, recycling overdone designs, employing garish color schemes and lacking any semblance of design or artistic skill (even though the same is quite a subjective idea), the current scene is more than overly saturated and lacking in fresh ideas, it just...well, it just fucking sucks.

    SO: I ask you, fellow TRUE YORKERS. We've lived here. We've seen it all. From the rise & fall of Kingpin, PNB Nation & EgoTrip to the summer of Illmatic, on to the contagion of Stussy (when it was on Prince St.) and it's imitators (remember Mossimo?), and inspired designers like 555-SOUL (a ratbox on Ludlow, not a corporate HQ on Lafayette) back when PhatFarm was still on the lowkey preppy golf tip...I'm talkin that UNIQUE, 99X, Slam, Union, Xlarge (on Avenue A!) Ssur (Deadly Venoms era, not DC shoes, thank you) and Footworks style...old Girbauds with Pumas, a mixture of De La Soul meets Beastie love. The cult-like search for vintage Hang Ten and rocking Vans chukkas.

    NYC People, we did it all, you name it. The world knows us as tastemakers. North Face as a 'streetwear brand?' Thank the emcees. Ralph? Tommy? Calvin? Same thing. The whole backpacker aesthetic that so many international rookie punks talk shit about but have absolutely no clue what it means? it was us. We were there in midair hopping turnstyles, Sharpies in hand. Those were good days and I know they're gone...but there was something there that is sorely missing today. Originality. People had their own style. Not cut n paste from mags, sites, videos. The people making tastes were original, and thus the people making the clothes had to be original too. Not so today.

    Clearly I'm not alone in this rant of the halcyon times, as we currently live in a world of reissues. Everyone wants to look like they actually wore in that $300 (or $600!) pair of jeans, but will you ever wear in anything at all, if you have obsessed over obtaining 10 pairs? Neo-nigga converts & consumer suckers feel part of a culture, they feel like they're down, by...and I can't believe I'm actually not joking when I say this...by buying limited colorways of old hightops? Did I wake up in the twilight zone? What happened to Carhartt being a work/utility brand embraced by the HitSquad? Now they actually target...skaters?!?!?

    Don't get me wrong, artists have to grow, and people need to make money. I ain't gonna whine about selling out, and blah blah. I know how it works, I've seen it a hundred times. Something is dope, known about by very few, then it catches a buzz

    They had so many dope ones i could go on for days but don't wanna bore heads. but waaaaay before so many of today's wack brands co-opted the exTREMEly overbroad "streetwear" nomenclature, PNB did their fucking thing to the fullest. on the real, just google (use quotes) "PNB Nation" and you'll eventually find an interview with Brue, one of the creators. it's very in-depth and revealing. i hope your father is alive and well, keep on keepin on. ALWAYS KNOW YOUR ROOTS. this whole scene, rap, fashion, etc., is at this point a continous cyclical regurgitation of past ideas. most young patrons of this culture don't know or see it. rap quotes on shirts, flipped logos. jacked images. fonts. the list goes on. gotta understand, back when pnb first dropped, there had been literally NOTHING like that at the time. Graf mixed with fashion? Controversial, conscious messages? "street"wear"??? all unheard of at the time.

    They were true fucking pioneers. Still garnering most regal propers to this day. But in the current scene, I can only say that we're currently in an oversaturated and creatively stagnant scene...and ironically enough here's an illustration, a rap quote...

    you can do a regular Google search, but it'd only help if you spoke fluent japanese. most of their stuff is now in japan only, or online for japanese dialectors.

    you can hit up ebay too, but they usually have only XXXXL sizes. (PNB runs big too, so you can imagine how big we're talking)...what's more, since they licensed their shit to some corporation (i think it's Perry Ellis) their designs were outsourced and grew realllly wack. only the 89-98ish era shit is worth a stalker-like search. and...no disrespect, but if Harold Hunter ever had an estate sale, holmes likely has every piece they ever made. they loved that dude.

    To the rest, Also: Remember KingPin? G.I.? McNairy Bros? early SNAFU & old DUFFER shit? all Union staples, helped it become what it is today. i sniffle for them old days...(before throwback sneaks and 300 dollar denim clouded those shelves and every rookie boutique since)

  12. I'm not new to screening, but so far all i've done is the one ink at a time, one color one cost two color diff cost etc. but using this method, if i were to try to replicate a photo, i'd essentially be getting charged for a thousand different color changes on the 4-head machine.

    for one or two color shirts, it's fine. but for photo to cotton shirts, i need the CMYK thing you mentioned.

  13. JayAllen, thank you so much. So I just need to find a screenprinter using 4 color process CMYK inks. So obviously, this process is slightly more expensive...are there sites to check for equipment, inks, printers as well as those providing this service (in nyc)?

    I'm looking to conceive and execute on the working waterfront of New York, New York. :)

  14. Kane, thanks for the wisdom. Sorry that it provokes further questioning.

    This has eluded me for some time and, well if there's an SF postup clearing up the mystery, then tell me and I shall seek same. I understand that people like to keep their methods and production tips a secret, so if anyone AT ALL feels like privatetalking the answer to me, I won't be mad :)

    Even back in the early 90's, i would see tees with a flawless photo-to-cotton transfer. Even years of wear later, the photo would be faded but still look great, almost like the ink was IN the cotton, not ON it (like plastisol inks). I asked around, people gave me the obvious answer: Heat Transfer paper. Increasingly, I'd see the proliferance of shit-quality paper transfer all over nyc. Picture that embarrassing Scarface photoshirt you saw on the train last week...with the cracking and peeling of a shiny, almost tacky coating on the fabric. Yuck. Then someone mentioned "You need commercial heat transfer paper" suggesting that was a better quality. Fine, okay...so I'd seen those in boutiques too. A nicer transfer, doesn't feel as thick and chealy coated...it's more matte, thinner, the photo seems to actually be IN the cotton fibers.

    But it seems I'm wrong?!?! Is there no process not prohibitively expensive that would enable me to apply photos, whether custom shaped, rectangle or whatever, to COTTON tees? And further, why is it that some of those 1-hour photo places offering to put your dog on a tee...sometimes they look pretty damn good! I'll take a better feel of the transfer over picture quality. In fact, a somewhat faded pic would be okay, if I knew it was really on that cotton and not going to crack if the fabric stretched

    Kane, btw the Olympic stretchy example, that cleared things up perfectly. However, what does 'no hand' refer to?

    Lastly (thank you everyone for your patience...) how can I put pics on this site? I'd like to show some examples of tees that baffle me insofar as process, # of inks, colors, etc.

    just hit up Rival today, Vinny Ponti and I were musing over the We Run NY hoodie. i copped the NY Mets colorway. although not the best quality hoodie, it's a nice start for a dope nyc graphic. keep on keepin on.

    also had a soft spot for the graphic b/c i thought of doing the exact same thing, about a month back. never did, but saw this today and loved it...that ever happen to you? i'm sure it has, you wanna flip something a certain way and someone else goes and does it? frustrating but whatever. i also saw a Bad Brains flip on a deck in the store, and got worried about another lost idea but theirs was different.

    anyone giving you shit talking on this site is on some bullshit, and it's the main reason i stopped SF posting as much as i used to...("don't watch the bulls as much, they got too many whiteboys" type of situation). i too agree that the website shouldn't include any information about the icons depicted other than their names...and it was Hyman Roth, the character BASED on Meyer Lansky, who said the US Steel comment, wasn't it?

    all in all, the We Run NY is a simple yet very dope flip of a classic icon of nyc culture. who cares how young in the game you are. rep your shit to the fullest. i know from firsthand experience, Union only liked one of my first 10 tees, and Wilkins told me Mrs. InCharge over there wouldn't take just one of a line. so obviously you guys are doing something right if they're carrying your shit.

    website has a weird Private Press feel to it, i guess you were aiming for that?

    Won't go into which ones I ain't feeling, but still give nice props on the less is more realness of We Run NY. I saw it hanging on the rack, and heard KRS screaming it in the background. next minute i was wearing it. Word. you'll get no hatred from me.

    why can't you sublimate onto cotton? i noticed using a plastisol ink in screening, after the shirts were dried, certain glittery ink washed off the cotton, but not the polyester, so i guess it's the same reason?

    Unrelated sorta: How can i quickly beat to hell a crisp new poly hoodie? want to quickly fade, and maybe even sand it a bit for fraying. any tips?

  17. ^^^ aaah son you gotta check him out. he's not the best emcee in the world but you should see this guy, he's a walking Polo Sport ad and has this helmet/mic filter head attachment from "Spit Boxer" that he rocks live. He looks a little like Ghost Face and has a similar eccentricity about him...but imagine if Ghost was like a billionth as dope and highly slept on in the indie scene. That's thirstin. He's on early Rawkus era stuff.

    And the name is a straight jack from Gilligan's Island. Which is also a Ghost line, ("thirstin howl tha third kid, back on the scene!!!!") so maybe the similarities aren't just a coincidence.
