I got myself a few private students off this site when I was out there (came back to London last May). It's a good way to supplement your crap wages (3,000Â¥ per hour is the going rate for privates) and you can make some good mates.

Perfect for those of us who aren't qualified so need to wing it a bit.

I also worked in a conversation lounge in Yokahama called EET. I got a low hourly rate but the students were safe and Maurice who runs it is a top guy. He was always looking for new teachers.

  2. Nice 1 Andreas.

Some good tips in there. I really fancy Moscow but have heard some horror stories about the crime there. Is it as bad as we hear?

Mind you - I now live in Hackney (east London) and grew up in Liverpool so Im no stranger to funny business.

  3. Has anyone any experience of Eastern Europe?

I'm thinking of taking the Mrs to somewhere more interesting than Paris or Amsterdam for a few days for a bit of R&R and shopping.

What's the best cities (Warsaw, Prague for example) for tourism, quality shopping and good prices?

Not really bothered about clubs and stuff. We like clothing by young designers/underground labels and re-cycle stuff.

    Thanks

  4. Alright lad.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's mad on the Columbias and that I'm not just experiencing blind nostalgia.

Seriously, I would lay down cash for the low top ones any day.

As for the Quady. Used to go on Fridays and Saturdays and to the 2 till 8 as much as we could afford. We grew up down the road and used to beg and borrow (not steal obviously) to get there. We used to starve in school all week, saving dinner money and buying one lose cigi to share.

I stuck that tag line on because it always made me laugh when driving past the Qaudrent Park after it closed. Someone wrote on the wall "Re-open the Quad". Then about a week later some else wrote "Ok we will". Proper scouse sense of humor.

We also used to go to Shelly's in Stoke and later the Blackpool clubs.

Where you going out round then? Where did you go? Don't want to sound a big ex raver but its not common to find lads who went to those gaffs.

  5. Does anyone in the UK remember some Adidas shoes from the mid 80s called Columbia?

Every kid in Liverpool (that's UK) must have had a pair and they were unreal. Deffinately my all time favourites.

They were blue suede type leather with a chunky, off white soul and were the first shoes I ever saw with the red, white and blue pegs. (no blue suede shoes jibes please lads).

I have been hyping these shoes for years and cant find anything about them online anywhere.

If anyone can direct me to at least an image it would be much appreciated.

    Nice

  6. Best advice is to find a good flat share.

    Try here:

Not my fault if you find a lune though mate.

Personaly I recomened Hackney/Dalston/Stoke Newington areas in East London. You can get the best value for money there as its a bit rough and ready and has no tube. Truth is though, I havent had any bother here in 10 years and the buses are shit hot.

I get to Oxford Circus in 35 mins and Shoreditch is 10 minutes away (loads of bars and good stores round there).

Best other advice I can give is use the night bus instead of dodgy cabs and never by drugs in Leicester square.

Oh yeah - bring Tim Tams, Tia Maria style, with you from Oz. They will be the highest possible currency in buying favours off your work mates when the brews arrive.

  7. I've just come back to London after a year in Tokyo.

I was DJing house music out there. Best advice is just pester everyone. I managed to play at least once a month just from blagging and putting my own nights on. If you didnt already know Hip Hop is massive now in Tokyo so you should be OK. Make sure you make a big thing of being from Brooklyn, "the real deal" and all that. Dont count on getting paid much more than 10,000Â¥ though.

Point gallery might be something llike what you are looking for. My wife did 2 private shows there last year. It's small and feels semi-industrial as its built into a railway bridge. The whole thing shakes as the trains run overhead, urban enough?

Take a look at www.k45design.com for photos of my wifes show at Point. Its the "Extended Play" and "Long Play" shows.

  8. The Ruby Room in Shibuya has soom good nights. I can recomend The Deck'N'Effect parties. It's my mates night and he plays wicked break beats. The croud is mixed Japanese/Gaijin and well friendly.

La Farique (also Shibuya) is good too.

I've just spent a year living in Shinjuku and avoided the big clubs after a couple of quite boring nights out. Cheap booze though - compared to London.
