Roy. (expurgated edition)

I interpret his "over designing" as an indicator of his skillful improvement as an artisan.

Me Too.

The only jeans with additional elements in terms of features were the contest jeans, if you consider the cinch back, duck pocket bags and pocket opening. But these were unique.

As far as his 'regular' jeans go all that has changed is in the refinements of the processes used to make them. They aren't embellished with gold and trinkets - far from it, the shell stitching on the RS1+2 is a nice touch and an improvement over the 'OG Roys' and up to this new edition RS3/RN3, no changes have been made to detailing (revisions of cut and fabric aside), except the lined Rear & Coin pocket.

They were great when he started out and they still are. Even More so, if anything.

Cheers

just a lil roy thing to make everyone cringe. a few years ago my friend's mother saw his original roys on the ground in his room and threw them out because she saw a hole in the crotch. i was so upset. i introduced him to raw denim with those, and then after they were discarded, he gave up.

A few years ago??

I do like the OG roys as well, although, the black and blues and these new ones with the loomstate Cone stuff are probably pretty nice. I just liked the back and forth required to get a pair of Roys through roy. I definitely felt like they were made to measure, he popped in a cool little keyhole for my pocket watch chain. It was just pleasant dealing with him. Price had nothing to do with it. I still love all the stuff he does though. I would spend $300 easily for a pair made by him.

this.

I think a lot of what got this thread, the tour, the contest, the expurgated 'URCC', et cetera, was the back and forth and the fact that you had an opportunity to get to know the guy who made your jeans, and vice versa. While i've not met Roy in person I consider him a friend of sorts, and if he ever decides to do a limited run of MTM boy howdy am I hoppin on board that.

I did the back and forth with Roy for the OGs but never got the sense of getting to know him, at least not in the sense through similar limited interactions with Victor at Raleigh Denim or Tony at Tellason. I don't take it as a negative, just a different way of getting to know someone because personalities differ. Dude is certainly kind, thoughtful, and has an odd sense of humor, which I like. Aloof.

And a genius.

Has anyone had an issue with the new roy narrow version riding up the ass crack? I have the right size, but they have a thong effect going on.

Edit: actually looking at the fit pics on SE, Roy looks to have the same thing. This is normal?

I think it's probably because they haven't been soaked yet. The fit and shape of unsanforized jeans can be a little wonky. I would be surprised if Roy hadn't already worked out the fit before manufacturing them for sale.

Not the best example, but here's a pic of some raw, STF LVC '47s on a model. You can see where the fabric gathers. Just let 'em shrink-- they'll be fine.

Roy shrink tests his jeans more than i think any other "brand" we've ever dealt with. It's done to an almost psychotic level with every aspect of the shrinking, skewing, and color changing of fabric and threads taken into account.

X-posting from Roy x Cone thread...

This was January 2011:

Took some evo. pics of my Roy x Cone today in the 40 degree (Celsius) heat...bloody hot...

Almost 12 months of wear, but since I can't be in these at work, the effective wear is more like 6 to 8 months:

Dug this out of my email archive just for shits and giggles. From Roy to a noob with regard to washing/drying the OG jeans:

You have choices. I always wash them in hot inside out in the machine and tumble dry. This is because I like how the combo crinkles up the denim and rinses all the excess indigo out. Plus my tub can't take any more jeans soaking, what with the fibers clogging the drain. So, that what I do. I also like to get all the shrink out of them, and the washing machine on hot really shrinks them up good.

The accepted method is to run a hot bath and soak them for 20 minutes then ring them out and hang to dry.

This is a great way to do it.

You can also wear them without shrinking them first and just turn up the cuff. I do that sometimes too because they have a different fit and I like that as a change of pace. Then eventually wash them. they might develop a better patina that way if you wore them a long time because you give the wear areas a head start on abrasion.

Later when you do wash them to clean them, wash cold inside out and hang dry. This preserves the fabric. I never do this because I'm lazy in weird ways like this. I just wash them with all my other clothes in hot and tumble dry. I only tell you this so I don't feel like a hypocrite.

I love that last part.

I dont like my jeans like that, so we will see. They don't seem to be particularly short now, so maybe it is just a poor angle on the picture.

they're fine. if it were me, and they didn't shrink any further, I'd probably get another inch taken off them. IMO, any amount of stacking looks bad with a slim tapered jean.

Ok, so before I go into any details, i'd like to make it clear that i do love these jeans and this is not a hate-post, think of it as more of an observation.

Whilst having a denim-porn moment (comparing the finer details on my different pairs), I noticed a flaw on my pair of ROYs - one belt loop doesn't tuck under the waistband like the others do. Guess it shows that a 'one-man artisan operation' doesn't necessarily equal 'absolute perfection' and that ROY is actually human, just like the rest of us.
