just bought an olympic trip 35 and an olympus infinity stylus epic

the trip is awesome... no battery required due to its selenium cell

takes the dreamiest photos, 60s-style

didn't see much film discussion in the previous pages

just took some lovely outdoor/landscape pix with some ektar 100 and velvia 100

portra 400 has been alright to me

what's everyone's favorite film to use??

i got some ilford delta 400 b&w film to use up also..

anyone got other b&w recs??

As others have said, Ilford HP5+. I haven't shot any other black and film film in close to a year. It pushes really well up to 1600 which to me is a huge plus. 3200 also is okay. I prefer the grain of HP5+ over Delta at the same speed.

The big plus with Delta is that it comes in a slower speed. Granted you could pull the HP5+ the two stops to match Delta 100 but I have no experience with pulling film. I've only push it.

My uncle and I talked about photography for a couple hours tonight. He has a Hasselblad 500C sitting in an old camera bag in his closet. Geeze. I want it.

I could have sold you my spare 500c body and a lens or two if I knew you were interested.

I picked up a 50's Monte 35 today. I have no idea how to use... I kind of think it's broken, but it's nothing like any camera I've ever used. Anyone have any experience with cameras like this?

Edit: Found this little walkthrough to the Monte 35A. Cool little camera. Wish mine was as clean as the one below.

Just put my first roll through my new Mamiya 7. I had my lens hood on improperly or something, but aside from that I really like this shot.

why even use a 7?

the resolution on this makes it look like it was shot on 35mm.

you should sell that camera to someone who will use it as something other than a status symbol/fashion accessory.

Hello,

The Hassy's a very nice camera, the waist-finder is quite magical.

I'd recommend a 500cm instead, because the C's are much older, thus prone to acting up.

It's a completely different experience from the rangefinders that I'm used too.

And it's like the gateway drug to even bigger formats.

this was taken the nice open space at the landing of the residential area, atop the shops at Rochor Centre, Singapore.

The lady has been living at Rochor for the past 31 years and granny is residing at the old folk's home just below the flats.

Now they would both have to find new lodging due to the incumbent demolishing of Rochor Centre, to make way for a new highway.

Worryingly, Fred Durst comes to mind with his pained proclamation that 'It's my way or the highway!' I guess in this case it is both the government's way, and the highway.

And of course you've to oblige to taking a portrait of your better half.

is there anywhere i could read up on getting into film? ie. different types of film and formats/where to get scans done/other noob shit like that

What would you like to know about getting into film?

My advise would be to start with a simple, inexpensive 35mm SLR.

There are plenty to choose from, off the top of my head - Pentax Super-Program, Pentax Spotmatic,Canon AE-1, Nikon FM3A, Olympus OM-1.

From there you can try out different films, running the gamut from black and whites to print film and slides.

Get some cheap ones like the kodak ultramax 400, ilford hp5+, etc (it's cheap in my area).

For starters just get the labs to develop and scan them for you.

Learn what works, what doesn't, learn what you like to shoot, your habits, your penchants, your niche.

Observe, learn, research, experiment.

From there, with a better understanding of your style of photography, you can move on to investing in other system and methods.

Such as rangefinders, TLRs, medium-format, large format, self-developing your own bnw, c41, e6, etc.

The key is the immerse yourself and understand yourself, without shelling too much cash at the get-go.

i hope this helps, please feel free to ask any questions.

if it's within my limited scope, i'd be happy to help.

Recommendations on best labs for the processing end of things? I shot film for years but haven't shot any in years now. So some references for places would be much appreciated.

I'm curious where everyone else gets their film developed. I've used a lot of different mail-ins from Dwayne's Photo in Kansas, The Icon in LA, Bluemoon Camera in the PNW for example.

The big issue with me is whether or not a mail-in will push process BW and what they charge for it. For example some will charge two bucks for stop which is pretty lame especially when you push two or more stops.

I guess I should just buy ISO 3200 film and just run that instead of pushing ISO 400 all the time. Haha.

some shots from a roll of Wephota PAN 200 i picked up from some back alley in Hanoi, was trying to find some Tri-X (impossible) and never even knew wephota existed at that point. Souped it in D-76 once i got back home and was really suprised with the results, thought it was going to be shit cos the film was so cheap. Sadly i can't find more of this stuff anywhere anymore.

Hi Protocol, how did you find Hanoi?

I was there a while back, went to Sapa too.

For me I found it to be unbelievably hectic, impossibly colourful and completely different from home!

Here are some images from my trip, all colour since I knew the place would be vibrant

Mostly slides; a mixture of velvia, provia and my perennial favourite, ektachrome.

Traveled light for Vietnam, so it was small-format, one lens, one camera set-up -

My trusty Hexar RF with a Voigtlander 35mm f/2.8 Color-Skopa.

Your shots from Vietnam really take me back, wish i brought some slide film with me now - the colours are so good. Anyway Hanoi was great - I went in the height of summer so was sweating balls pretty much 100% of the time. But was staying with family so got to experience proper Hanoi city life away from the more central areas, really loved how chill people there are.

Did you explore the city by motorbike by any chance? That was probably the best thing for me - just rolling around the city on the back of a bike, fuckin terrifying the first time tho! Regret not shooting more film while out there.
