i went to this awesome rooftop bar,

not to sure where it was since i was drunk when i stumbled upon it, but i do remember it was within 1km of the grand train station.

as for cool shops i don't think shopping was too awesome, i think there was a zara and a few h&m's

but definately get some of the mini doughnuts people sell on the street.

Hungarian airspace totally reopened today, but I'm still waiting to know if my flight will be canceled or not (I'm from Paris).

Anyway, I found some links :

http://wikitravel.org/en/Budapest

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/hungary/738321/Budapest-travel-guide.html

http://budapest-travel-guide.info/

http://www.pestiside.hu/20070710/budapests-best-bars-and-nightclubs

http://www.goingout.fr/BUDAPEST.html

There isn't that much tips about Budapest on the web, I think I will ask some cool kids in the city where to hang out at night, that seems to be the best solution.

So I came back Tuesday and here are the places I tried :

-Panorama : maybe the most luxurious nightclub in Budapest, so not the best, but I saw James Holden there and it was fucking nice. If hungarians don't seem to have fun, don't worry, that's normal. Anyway, it's in the Citadella and you have the best view of Budapest at night from there if you climb the stairs.

-Le Mono : pretty small nightclub, but there is always nice minimal music. People usually don't come before 3am, so go there at the end of the night.

-Szimpla : A big bar like there is a lot in Budapest, 2 or 3 floors, can't remember, with a lot of different rooms, the music is nice, interior decoration is a little bit wtf and made of what they found, but that's the charming part. You can smoke a hookah there too. It's in the Synagogue neighborhood.

-Instant : 200 meters from le mono, quite like the Szimpla, but with much more tourists and less confortable seats/rooms. Though, there is a real dancefloor in the basement contrary to the Szimpla.

-Mumus : It's a nice mix between the Szimpla and the Instant. That's also not far from the Szimpla.

-Gödör : Shitty giant place with not that much people inside. But the bar is like 20meter long so we have been able to steal an incredibly nice 2L bottle of hungarian wine.

-Castro Bistro : Near Deak Ferenc Ter, a nice place to have a drking or a meal during the afternoon. There is also a computer with free internet access if you are too tightwad to pay 100ft for 1 hour in a cybercafé.

-Alterego : Someone told us to go there, so we checked. Damn, that was the gayest place I saw in my life, don't go there.

Things to do/see, amongst many other :

-The Royal Palace neighborhood : Very touristic, but beautiful. And go to the labyrinth, that's funny.

-Being lost in the suburbs, always nice to see.

-Rent a four-wheeled bicycle on Margit Island and have fun.

-Széchenyi Baths, best baths of Budapest for sure.

-Go to an Opera, but buy a 1000 or 2000ft seat, you won't see anything. with the 400ft seats.

-The Liberty Square neighborhood (with the Parliament and some other nice buildings).

-The House of Terror.

-The Citadella, for the nice view.

-Hungarian National Museum.

-Take a train and go to rural areas.

In term of clothes, hungarians have really poor taste. It's something that I would describe as being between whorehouses, rednecks and Ibiza clubbers style.

If the city center, most of people do speak english, but in the suburbs or rural areas, that's sometimes a long pain to be understood. Hungarians are really helpful with tourists, don't hesitate to ask them for some tips, like what are the nice places to go at night. They're are not really open-minded though and it's pretty hard to have a conversation with them, so you can't really make any contact there.

The Turkish Baths have pool parties at night. They're pretty euro trash but it's basically just a giant naturally heated hot tub party in 900 year old architecture so it's pretty hard to complain. There are free walking tours pretty much every day that are worth it if you have nothing better to do. I went to 2 or 3 vintage / antique stores that had incredible shit. worth checking out although I wouldn't know how to find them.

Anyone know if there's any good shops or local brands to check out?  I'm planning on renting a bike and doing lots of exploring... From what I've heard, Budapest is about 20 years behind in terms of fashion, but you never know...

I went this time last year. Had such a good time.

Here's our itinerary which might be helpful?

Favourite things we did was definitely the outdoor baths. Favourite bar was Szimpla Berlin. Small and low key. The ruin pubs are great, but quite quiet at this time of year as it gets extremely cold. Would recommend packing a warm coat!

Dope city. Very cheap too. Don't bother looking for clothes shops though, not really that type of place.
