Vintage Denim?

Hi y’all!

sorry for my long absence - have been busy for the past couple months post-graduation, moving, etc. now really focussed on work in anticipation of my first student loan payment... what a time to be alive!

anyway I wanted to share some photos of a vintage type iii I came across a few days ago. really beautiful garment that I am having a bit of a hard time precisely dating, and am (sadly) intending to put up for sale soon. if anyone has more precise insight on the specifics of the jacket I’d love to hear, but otherwise enjoy the photos! thanks!!

here is the jacket, size 50, small “e”, short(er than I remember many 70505-0217s being? maybe just have the proportions wrong in my head), dark and still somewhat-crispy denim.

the patch is interesting to me—small like the later 70s jackets I’ve seen but with a different care label than the shorter fabric ones I usually recall.

here you can see the tab and pocket stitching, and some nice blues coming through above the seam...

and here the stitching on the waistband, double-row like some early 70s samples but done in dark blue instead of orange.

The buttons read 52, though the “2” is invariably poorly stamped and quite hard to read. Here are a couple examples:

also notable is some loose stitching throughout

and a shot of the back for good measure. marbling is incredible!!!

having trouble uploading texture shots from my phone, but i’ll try once I can get internet in town. anyway, thanks for looking, hope to be around a bit more often soon!

not something I was expecting to find, and unsure of its status

oshkosh b'gosh bib overalls

low-back style

bought w/out age statement, but on discussion, seller ventured for 50s...

(random eBay searches seem to declare widely different ages all the way back to 30s)

the low back feature is something that seems to point to the 40s? but seems too too fresh, especially in terms of the print on the back elastic

but oshkosh shutting adult production in late 90s surely never got into their own repro business? [pointer doing solid low back style in current times...]

but: happiness: old or not: it fits...

& invariably: photo-dumping

labels, stitching (inside and out - including the previous owners hem job- they hand hemmed to different heights, but at a very hipster ankle swing...), loom chatter, hardware, rough n ready fit etc.

(and in conclusion shown in relation to lvc 30s jacket)

any thoughts on dating oshkosh (or other pointers to its history) gratefully received... (not reselling, intending to wear, but interested...)

--- edit: @MJF9 has produced pretty conclusive 1950s dating in the waywt: thank you!!!

a very nice piece and a solid fit - suits your style!

always amazed - or should I say appalled - by the sloppy workmanship of the original sewing from these period pieces. that would not pass quality inspection today...

thanks so much @Foxy2! happy with fabric and fit, but bib overalls always a tough one to pull off...

and yes: always funny to think of the singular artisanal stitchwork going into current pieces to approximate the knocked out versions of yesteryear: csf very in my mind here [in a positive way]

i post up screen grabs of @MJF9's most useful pages from waywt thread that point to the relevant OshKosh pages of Lightning Mag; in attempt to be helpful for thread [at least as long as imgur stays afloat]

Hey @bartlebyyphonics do those Oshkosh overalls have selvedge hidden in the coin pocket or in the utility pocket on the leg?  My vintage Oshkosh overalls have them, but sadly I've grown a bit too fat to wear them regularly.  Fun fact, I almost went to college in Oshkosh.

hey; sorry not to have seen the post earlier!
simple answer; yes (but opposite side to Levis - i.e. on the fabric closest to body)

Great post @Flash, and one good bizarre Levi's post deserves another. I spotted these on Marvins a while back and forgot to post them, they must be some of the rarest jeans Levi's ever produced, the 551BXX, a button version(???) of the short lived 551ZXX, which is one of my favorite cuts...

No offset rear belt loop like the 551ZXX...

You can see the how great the old school thread colors were...

Very nice , can’t say I’ve seen one before ?? Couldn’t have been produced for long

I'm guessing they were some kind of accident or else a custom order(???), something like that anyway, seems odd they would go from 501xx->501ZXX->551ZXX->505 and then stick another button fly model in there for good measure.

Very nice mate , hoping to pick up an early 50’s lee 91j ( or payday if the prices are a bit steep ) when I go to Tokyo ... can’t wait to go back to berberjin

Let's see if you can stop yourself at "just" one jacket, haha. Either way, looking forward to loads of pics if you get your hands on one.
