Today my jeans helped me feed live locusts to Marley, our bearded dragon. She’s 7 or 8 now and we’ve had her for a little over 6 years. Those tweezers are about a foot long in total as I don’t want to get too close to her food!

One of my friends owned a chameleon.. (the one with the Victorian curiosity shop dining room) well it was his younger brothers really and when his brother went to uni, he adopted it.. he had it for a few years before he met his last partner, she was crazy as a fruit cake but i really liked her... anyhow, when they split she went to the house to collect her shiz and she sent him a photo of his dead chameleon with a pencil impaled through it with a msg saying "Oh, ive got some bad news, your chameleon has fallen onto a pencil"

Man, what a bitch!

Today my jeans (seven foot cowboy) went to my workshop. And I made some parts for @Duke Mantee.

the plan was to turn some parts on a lathe and brass braze them together.

I have hardly any experience with a lathe and are intimidated by it. But really would like to learn and properly use it.

so first step was to find the parts. I knew I had threaded rod and know there are plenty of round cut offs in the shop.

the find the center of the round parts and drill holes thru them, big enough for the threaded rod to go thru. In hindsight I should have cut threads in them.

fining the center was easy, keeping the drill there is something else.

I than mounted the round parts on the rod and turn them on the lathe to spec.because of the different sizes of the round part it didn’t work. It got caught and flew off. Intimidated lathe.

changed to do two in one go. That did work, especially when I turned up the rpm . Even more scary.

then turn the rod to spec. From 6 mm to 4 mm. The thin wobbly rod got caught and flew off. Took it slower and somewhat managed.

made a lithe fixture with the right spacing and brazed them together.

I heated up the rod mostly and let the brass flow down it on the top part. So after clean up you get a nice dome on it.

had to be creative with how to hold the part for clean up.

et voila . 4 belt thingies for Duke

^one of the most rewarding hobbies, at least to me. Takes a lot of down-time, which can be easily integrated into a work-day.
With what did you feed your starter and how stiff did you keep it? Have always kept my starter-mothers in the fridge until I made a levain/pre-dough with them, which worked out fine for years, considering weekly feedings and so on.
As far as I know stiffer starters hold up longer than runny ones and oatmeal does wonders for yeast-activity.
Definitely need to get my last one, HP-Baxxter back, or at least one of his sons...

Same here.
Tried the granny-style sourdough once, so basically a bit of dough kept in the fridge and fed with grains/flours until you use it again. Produces great results and is a bit more consistent/easy to control, since you don't let the motherdough fluctuate in temperate as often, which causes stress on the culture.
But as always, never failproof. I once had kimchi get moldy, cause I transferred it to another place...

Wearing ancient cut off Levi’s finding stuff to do at home on a sticky hot day while feeling post vaccination crappy… first made a new cover for the cat bed then made a hat out of the legs of my old Yamane's (cut them off to go on a date at the beach and I didn’t own beach clothes)

Evolution of jeans a bit… my hat has the start of some honeycomb fades. Used the reverse for the under brim to show the selvedge.

Yamane's have been worn and washed lots over the 12 years since I hacked them in half, would have been worn more if they were still long as I don't wear shorts in public much.
The rest of day sitting outside reading and drinking peppermint tea

yes... I'm spending today listening to records with the cat and tidying the cats toilet (huge garden)

the happily ever after will be around somewhere, hopefully making endless cups of tea (I transitioned him from Levis to APC to Andewhalls)

Yeah, I’m pretty introverted and aspie so find meeting new people awkward anyway. In the past had just met people as part of social life.

she is a lucky cat. They were going to put her to sleep as she had too many issues, but I was like nah I can deal with them. She has anxiety, allergic to red meat and a dodgy hip. She’s now 18, goes to the vet for arthritis meds every month and on thyroid meds. She also has great taste in music.

I get it, sorry if I seemed patronising! sending a virtual hug/high five your way... meeting people to share things with is not the easiest; let alone people who care or have the time of day... sending positive thoughts your way

fwiw I really worry for the current generation, with easy fix of getir/just eat/tinder/grindr for hookups but still having to make relationship CVs for long term compassion/empathy... if Debord declaimed being 'together, alone' for the cinema generation, we in the interwebz are somewhere a little more attenuated - I keep meaning to read Eva Illouz around 'cold intimacy' on something like this topic...

and yes what a great cat & top tomatoes; I need to get on my kale growing this year; just weeds in my patches at the moment, only time attempted tomatoes they died just before getting into full speed... [and yes, full props to the baking discussion earlier; I am a terrible baker, but appreciate the sourdough knowledge!]

All good. I met my perfectly imperfect match and we've been together almost 12 years now.

We were set up on a blind date a few weeks after the beach date..

he askes me what my hobbies are, 'taking photos of jeans and posting them on the internet'... are they special jeans? kind of yeah...told him about the dd+1 evisu tour jeans and the Roy comp was about to start.

only a short date as he needed to go put on his lycra and ride his bike with his friends, (his bike collection seriously out does my jeans collection)

when I took the photos of the hat he laughed and said are you posting on the internet again.

Yeah, the current teenagers, conversations I overhear at work horrify me (I teach at a large girls high school*) and ex students that are in their mid 20's tell me their dating stories and laugh and cry at the same time. my step daughter wont talk to us about her BF which is triggering her dad, I'm equal parts she's a grown up she doesn't have to and a bit concerned that she's naive and will do something stupid.

We are building a 'shed' that will be half workshop half glasshouse this year so my tomatoes can be all year round. My kale, spinach and lettuce look like they are on 'roids at the moment as we've had a couple of tropical rainstorms over the last couple of weeks... now we just need to remember to eat the stuff.

Today I'm going to dig out a pair of made in NZ jeans from the 90's cause the company is rebooting and want images of their original jeans #procrastinating

They’re back! I heard knocking on the sliding glass door and finally realized what it was. Went out to take a look and one was knocking, mooching  blueberry cornbread. It’s been 5-6 months, I think, since I’ve seen them and it’s good to see them! It’s cool how something like a visit from Sandhill cranes or most any wildlife can lift one’s spirits. You can see a piece of blueberry cornbread just in front and below the bird. Gone in 60 seconds! And it’s cool how they remember after being away so long and who knows how many miles and places to visit.

I was in New Mexico USA for a few days recently. Here is perhaps an obligatory denim picture of me on a hill over Santa Fe wearing the TCB S40 contest jeans. I dunno why I am standing funny.

Here is a view of Santa Fe from lower down on that hike.

I went to the Meow Wolf installation (which I believe was the first one, there are a few others). It is basically a very large interactive art exhibit that tells a story if you care to find it. It was pretty cool. You aren't supposed to take pictures except for "personal use" so I will only post one. They probably don't want people spoiling everything.

A old kiva structure at Bandelier National Monument. I dunno who those four people are.

Here is a picture of the landscape at Valles Caldera National Preserve. On the way to Caldera and Bandelier we got routed through Los Alamos National Lab and we had this funny interaction with a guard at the gate:

US: Um, we just want to go to Caldera. Is this the right way or do we have to find a way around?

GUARD: You can get there through here. I need to see your ID.

GUARD: OK, stay on this road. Keep going straight. Do not stop. Do not turn left at any point. Do not take any pictures. Do you have any drones? Don't used those it you do.

US: Um, OK.

I wonder if they stuck a tracking device on us.

Some pictures of petroglyphs. The macaw was at Petroglyph National Monument outside Albuquerque. I am not sure it is really a macaw as what was one doing all the way up here in ore ancient times? The other creature was outside of Santa Fe somewhere on state land I think.

@djungelorm It’s likely it could have been a macaw, parrot or another tropical bird; central New Mexico was a primary trade route for indigenous peoples from as far south as the western Amazon and all the way up to northern British Columbia. Chetro Ketl (in Chaco Canyon natl park) is one of the more important trading centres, where during excavation in the 1930s researchers found whale teeth and parrot feathers, Amazonian clay pottery, and stones / gems / etc, among other artifacts, from pretty much every major geographic region between the two continents. The site was abandoned in the mid 12th century, so would have preceded any written ethnographic study by spanish conquistadors by a few hundred years. But the evidence for this sort of extensive trade and exchange of goods between continents is very well documented. Really cool that you got to visit so many historical sites while you were here!

We went to Inverness for a couple of days and since it’s just along the road we went to Culloden, the site where in 1746 any hope of the Jacobite rebellion continuing was decisively ended.

The land where the battle was fought is actually called Drummossie Moor and is really just a piece of marshy land with nothing much to see but it’s always been quite atmospheric.

In 2007 a Visitor Centre was built which I suppose makes it a better attraction that just an empty field - and for once the architecture is sympathetic to the place.

B8162230-1C89-4EDF-8C7F-38D3D655BA53.thumb.jpeg.8fa13f89e98d3bdf9de16467b038bd72.jpeg

There’s a small thatched-roof house called Old Leanach Cottage that stands in the east end of the battlefield, the exact date of its construction is unknown but it is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 18th century, meaning it survived the battle. It’s also unusual in that the roof thatch is heather.

… and a wee pic of nothing except the actual battlefield
